Book excerpt: Excerpt from A General View of Chinese Civilization: And of the Relations of the West With China In 1859 and 18601 delivered a course of free public lectures on the General History of Humanity. Three of the lectures in that course were devoted to Confucius and Chinese Civilization; and these I now publish. My main object in singling out this particular portion of a vast body of doctrine for separate publication is to bring to the notice of the higher minds and hearts amongst us the need. there is for setting on foot a reasonable and moral policy for regulating the relations of the West with the rest of the World. Those relations are coming more and more under the direction of a commercialism of the baser sort, or of a narrow proselytism, which is often, after all, very little better than a pretext for furthering some political or mercantile object. I am in hopes, also, that this sample of a political conception, based on a thorough philosophic study of the situation which it is desired to modify, will suffice to convince reflecting minds of the necessity of bringing to the study of social phenomena at least the same degree of attention and perseverance as is required for the study of the simpler phenomena of life and of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A General View of Chinese Civilization and of the Relations of the West With China But before the group formed by the advanced populations can adopt a proper policy towards the rest of the world, a change must be brought about in its way of looking at itself. When that change does take place, it will have the further effect of producing a wholesome reaction on the internal politics of the West. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventeen contributors to this interdisciplinary volume bring to the study of early China the analytical concerns of archeology, art history, botany, climatology, cultural and physical anthropology, ethnography, epigraphy, linguistics, metallurgy, and political and social history. Readers interested in such topics as the origin of rice or millet agriculture, the origin of writing, the nature of the trie, and the processes of state formation will find much value here. They will find, too, major hypotheses about teh cultural importance of ecogeographical zones in China, Neolithic interaction between the east coast and Central Plains, the remarkable homogeneity of early Chinese crania, and the links between the Hsia, Shang, and Chou dynasties. Relying on recently published archaeological evidence and the insights gained from carbon-14 and thermoluminescent datings, the authors provide original and significant interpretations of the nature of Chinese civilization in its formative stage and the processes by which civilizations form. Since there is little doubt that the complex of culture traits which defines Chinese civilization in the second and fist millennia B.C. developed from a Chinese Neolithic stage, the origin of the Chinese civilization is worth studying not only in its own right but as an instance of the indigenous development of civilizations in general. This volume will appeal to all who are intersted in the genesis of civilization and the transition from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age; it summarizes that state of present knowledge about China and suggests research strategies and hypotheses for the future. These topics include the major issues of "A Scientific Approach to the Origins of Chinese Civilization," "Ancient Chinese Society and the Change of Dynasties," "The Golden Ages of the Han, Tang and Qing Dynasties: a Comparative Analysis," "Transportation Systems and Cultural Communication in Ancient China," "Ethnic Relations in Chinese History,""The Systems of Politics, Law and Selecting Officials in Ancient China,""Agriculture, Handicraft and Commerce in Ancient China," "The Military Thought and Military Systems of Ancient China," "The Rich and Colorful Social Life in Ancient China," "The Evolution of Ancient Chinese Thought," "The Treasure House of Ancient Chinese Literature and Art," "The Emergence and Progress of Ancient Chinese Historiography," "Reflection on Ancient Chinese Science and Technology," "New Issues in the Modern History of China," and "A General Progression to the Socialist Modernization of the People's Republic of China." The book provides insights into Chinese history, allowing readers "to see the value of civilization through history; to see the preciseness of history through civilization." It focuses on the social background, lifestyle and development processes to illustrate ideologies and ideas.

Book excerpt: By the author of the highly acclaimed China's Imperial Past and written in the same lively style, this is a distillation of what every general reader and beginning student should know about the history of traditional Chinese civilization. It weaves together chronologically all aspects of Chinese life and culture, broadly surveying general history, socioeconomic organization, political institutions, religion and thought, and art and literature. The author explains how the Chinese empire emerged in antiquity, how it flourished and declined in successive cycles for thousands of years, and how in the end it found itself unprepared for both the domestic and the external challenges of the modern era. The result is a concise overview that is both absorbing in itself and basic to a more detailed study of China's long and complex evolution. I

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Hungary, trained in Chinese studies in Germany, Etienne Balazs was, until his sudden and premature death in 1963, a professor at the Sorbonne and an intellectual leader among European specialists on China. In this book, a selection of Dr. Balazs’ essays are presented for the first time in English. Arthur F. Wright, professor of history at Yale, and John K. Fairbank, professor of history at Harvard, have written a joint Preface and Mr. Wright has written an Introduction. Scholars and interested laymen will find a rich feast here in essays ranging over two thousand years of China’s social, economic, political, and intellectual history. A wealth of data supports the various theories Dr. Balazs develops, in a graceful translation by Hope N. Wright. Because Etienne Balazs regarded the Chinese past not as a curiosity but as a repository of relevant human experience, his essays are significant for anyone interested in the past and future of civilization. "If a reader should disagree with some of the brilliant points, he would still find them challenging and refreshing."—Journal of Asian Studies.
