Book excerpt: This Dictionary provides an explanation of the main ideas of and concepts central to chemistry. Each entry in this A-Z resource begins with a clear, one-sentence definition that explains why the term is important. These sentences are followed by a fuller explanation and, where appropriate, examples, diagrams, tables and equations. Key terms such as inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, the chemical industry, and qualitative analysis tell the user about the main features of important aspects of chemistry, with cross-references leading to related terms in each field. Other entries give a historical perspective, showing in outline how important themes of chemistry have developed.

Excerpt: ...of specific gravity between the ore and stony matter. When they are powdered, and a stream of water allowed to flow over them, it sets afloat the greatest part of the stony matter before it raises the ore. This operation is called by the English miners elutriation; there are many different methods of managing it, which produce a very exact separation of the ore from the earthy or stony matter. When it is sand and soft clay earth, and the ore is in hard lumps, it is readily separated from it by the water; or where it is mixed with a calcareous matter, the water gradually dissolves this, and leaves only an irony ochre. But the matrix is not frequently diffusible by water, so it must be powdered by mechanical means, and for this purpose they use milns, which are wrought by water. The matrix is sometimes even harder than the ore of any metal, so the ore is reduced to a fine powder soonest, and then its specific gravity will not avail it. Milr is a secretion peculiar to women, the females of quadrupeds and of cetaceous fishes, destined chiefly for the support of the young in the first stage of life. This fluid varies not only in different species of animals, but even in the same animal, at different times, according to the nature of the food, and other circumstances. It consists properly of a fat oil, and a particular gluten, which are imperfectly dissolved in a watery fluid or serum, by means of a saccharine substance, forming a kind of animal emulsion. The constituent parts of milk may be separated, either spontaneously, or by the addition of rennet, and several vegetable substances, such as madder, thistle, &c. but these last must be added to the milk in a cold state, otherwise they will rather retard than promote the process of...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Popular Chemical Dictionary: A Compendious Encyclopedia IN the compilation Of this dictionary, I have attempted to discharge a task which has not, to my knowledge, been pre viously undertaken, and that is, to give in one volume, in compendious form, and in simple language, descriptions of the subjects of chemistry - its laws and processes, the chemical elements, the more important inorganic and organic com pounds and their preparation or manufacture and applications, together with illustrated descriptions of chemical apparatus. My endeavour has been to produce a popular educational work which will incidentally serve as an advanced companion to my little book entitled Chemistry for Beginners and School Use (bailliere, Tindall and Cox), and as a general work of reference, not only to many practical chemists, but more particularly to that larger body of the public who, in course of their various callings, have occasion to deal or take interest in the thousand and one subjects and substances Of which descriptions are given.
