National policy continuities and the considerable time over which industrial performance responds to changed environments emerge with greater clarity in the long run. The chapters in this book take a broad view of industrial policy, including those policies that establish the framework', such as competition law, as well as sector for firm specific policies.

Book Synopsis Industrial Policy, Employer Size, and Economic Performance in Sweden by : Steven J. Davis
Download or read book Industrial Policy, Employer Size, and Economic Performance in Sweden written by Steven J. Davis and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pre-1990 Swedish tax system strongly disfavored younger, smaller and less capital-intensive firms and sectors and discouraged entrepreneurship and family ownership of businesses in favor of institutional ownership. Credit market regulations, the national pension system, employment security laws and centralized wage setting in Sweden reinforced the distortionary impact of the tax system. We describe the relevant Swedish policies and institutional arrangements, and we explain why the attendant distortions are likely to have hampered the efficient allocation of resources, reduced productivity, and retarded economic growth and recovery. We also develop evidence on the consequences of these distortions for the size structure and industrial distribution of employment. Taking the U.S. industrial distribution as a benchmark that reflects a comparatively neutral set of policies and institutions, Sweden's employment distribution is sharply tilted away from lower wage industries, less capital-intensive industries, and industries characterized by greater employment shares for smaller firms and establishments. Compared to other OECD economies, Sweden has the lowest rate of self employment, a dominant role for larger firms, and highly concentrated ownership and control of private-sector economic activity.

Download or read book The Challenge To European Industrial Policy written by Bernard Udis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-09 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining recent European experience with industrial policy, Dr. Udis explores ways to ease the transition to reduced or redirected levels of military spending. He surveys government policies in Great Britain, France, West Germany, Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Italy, identifying strategies for individuals, firms, and regions as they adjust to shifts in the economy. Regional development, science and technology, and labor market policies are analyzed in conjunction with public procurement strategies and government aid for exports and international ventures. The book includes material drawn from the author's interviews with government officials and industry leaders, illustrating practitioners' perspectives on these measures and on the nature of diversification and conversion. Their views and experience, the author argues, will be valuable tools for policymakers weighing the costs and benefits of implementing industrial policies in the United States.

Book Synopsis How Nations Succeed: Manufacturing, Trade, Industrial Policy, and Economic Development by : Murat A. Yülek
Download or read book How Nations Succeed: Manufacturing, Trade, Industrial Policy, and Economic Development written by Murat A. Yülek and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-02 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses developmental experience in different countries as well as British expansion following the industrial revolution from a developmental perspective. It explains why some nations are rich and others are poor, and discusses how manufacturing made economies flourish and spur economic development. It explains how today’s governments can design and implement industrial policy, and how they can determine economically strategic sectors to break out of Low and Middle Income Traps. Closely linked to global trade and (im)balances, industrialization was never an accident. Industrialization explains how some countries experience export-led growth and others import-led slowdowns. Many confuse industrialization with the construction of factory buildings rather than a capacity and skill building process through certain stages. Industrial policy helps countries advance through those stages. Explaining technical concepts in understandable terms, the book discusses the capacity and limits of the developmental state in industrialization and in general in economic development, demonstrating how picking-the-winner type focused industrial policy has worked in different countries. It also discusses how industrial policy and science, technology and innovation policies should be sequenced for best results.

Download or read book Unleashing Society’s Innovative Capacity written by Pontus Braunerhjelm and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-11-16 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an open access book. Europe faces significant challenges in the coming decades: geopolitical, demographic, technological, increased competition, climate-related, and health issues due to an aging population, to mention a few. Given these challenges, technological progress and new ways of handling complex issues will be key to continued prosperity and growth. To accomplish a growth process driven by innovation and entrepreneurship, the institutional environment must take into account a multitude of different policy areas that interact to either strengthen or weaken an economy's innovative potential. Innovation is not only about R&D and higher education but is also intimately related to entrepreneurship. Similarly, entrepreneurship is not only about low start-up costs and favorable tax rates. Hence, a consistent and coordinated policy environment conducive to innovation and entrepreneurship is required to translate innovation into high-growth firms and macro-level growth. This book presents the basic cornerstones required to provide a policy regime that can nurture such dynamics. The authors draw extensively on empirical analysis of the development of the Swedish economy, which has been transformed from a so-called "sclerosis" state in the 1980s until the early 1990s to an economy characterized by successful entrepreneurship and innovation. This transformation resulted from a reform agenda that has been gradually rolled out, beginning in the mid-1980s. The authors argue that the Swedish experience provides useful lessons for other nations as well.

Book Synopsis Industry and Politics in West Germany by : Peter J. Katzenstein
Download or read book Industry and Politics in West Germany written by Peter J. Katzenstein and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-06 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dynamic technological developments in industrial production, the rise of new social movements in national politics, and great changes in the international political economy have left a deep imprint on the Federal Republic. A compelling explanation of West Germany's success in maintaining economic prosperity and political stability under such challenging conditions has continued to elude observers. Under the editorship of Peter J. Katzenstein, thirteen distinguished scholars from both sides of the Atlantic here provide an original interpretation of the political economy of the Bonn Republic during the forty years since its founding, and explore in particular its extraordinary capacity for accommodating change. Whereas studies in political economy have typically focused on one level of political action—either the shop floor, or national politics, or the international system—this innovative account analyzes the interaction of change at all three levels, bringing together case studies drawn from six manufacturing and service sectors.
