Book Synopsis A Formation Flight Relative Navigation System by : Stephen Charles Felter
Download or read book A Formation Flight Relative Navigation System written by Stephen Charles Felter and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The trajectories considered are straight and level flight, turning flight and climbing flight. The first analysis considered the covariance propagation of both models without measurement updates. The reduced model process noise matrix is adjusted to account for the unmodeled terms. Next, the performance of the reduced filter with the adjusted process noise matrix is evaluated using, a new covariance analysis technique for the fault tolerant mode of the federated filter. The results of the covariance analysis are compared with actual flight results over an instrumented test range.
Book Synopsis Spacecraft Formation Flying by : Kyle Alfriend
Download or read book Spacecraft Formation Flying written by Kyle Alfriend and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2009-11-16 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Space agencies are now realizing that much of what has previously been achieved using hugely complex and costly single platform projects—large unmanned and manned satellites (including the present International Space Station)—can be replaced by a number of smaller satellites networked together. The key challenge of this approach, namely ensuring the proper formation flying of multiple craft, is the topic of this second volume in Elsevier’s Astrodynamics Series, Spacecraft Formation Flying: Dynamics, control and navigation. In this unique text, authors Alfriend et al. provide a coherent discussion of spacecraft relative motion, both in the unperturbed and perturbed settings, explain the main control approaches for regulating relative satellite dynamics, using both impulsive and continuous maneuvers, and present the main constituents required for relative navigation. The early chapters provide a foundation upon which later discussions are built, making this a complete, standalone offering. Intended for graduate students, professors and academic researchers in the fields of aerospace and mechanical engineering, mathematics, astronomy and astrophysics, Spacecraft Formation Flying is a technical yet accessible, forward-thinking guide to this critical area of astrodynamics. The first book dedicated to spacecraft formation flying, written by leading researchers and professors in the field Develops the theory from an astrodynamical viewpoint, emphasizing modeling, control and navigation of formation flying satellites on Earth orbits Examples used to illustrate the main developments, with a sample simulation of a formation flying mission included to illustrate high fidelity modeling, control and relative navigation

Book excerpt: The Goddard Space Flight Center Guidance, Navigation, and Control Center (GNCC) is currently developing and implementing advanced satellite systems to provide autonomous control of formation flyers. The initial formation maintenance capability will be flight-demonstrated on the Earth-Orbiter-1 (EO-l) satellite, which is planned under the National Aeronautics and Space Administration New Millennium Program to be a coflight with the Landsat-7 (L-7) satellite. Formation flying imposes relative navigation accuracy requirements in addition to the orbit accuracy requirements for the individual satellites. In the case of EO-1 and L-7, the two satellites are in nearly coplanar orbits, with a small difference in the longitude of the ascending node to compensate for the Earth's rotation. The GNCC has performed trajectory error analysis for the relative navigation of the EO-1/L-7 formation, as well as for a more advanced tracking configuration using cross- link satellite communications. This paper discusses the orbit determination and prediction accuracy achievable for EO-1 and L-7 under various tracking and orbit determination scenarios and discusses the expected relative separation errors in their formation flying configuration. Download or read book An Overview of Flight Test Results for a Formation Flight Autopilot written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first flight test phase of the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center Autonomous Formation Flight project has successfully demonstrated precision autonomous station-keeping of an F/A-18 research airplane with a second F/A-18 airplane. Blended inertial navigation system (INS) and global positioning system (GPS) measurements have been communicated across an air-to-air telemetry link and used to compute relative-position estimates. A precision research formation autopilot onboard the trailing airplane controls lateral and vertical spacing while the leading airplane operates under production autopilot control. Four research autopilot gain sets have been designed and flight-tested, and each exceeds the project design requirement of steady-state tracking accuracy within 1 standard deviation of 10 ft.
Book Synopsis Data Synchronization Discrepancies in a Formation Flight Control System by :
Download or read book Data Synchronization Discrepancies in a Formation Flight Control System written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aircraft hardware-in-the-loop simulation is an invaluable tool to flight test engineers: it reveals design and imple, mentation flaws while operating in a controlled environment. Engineers, however, must always be skeptical of the results and analyze them within their proper context. Engineers must carefully ascertain whether an anomaly that occurs in the simulation will also occur in flight. This report presents a chronology illustrating how misleading simulation timing problems led to the implementation of an overly complex position data synchronization guidance algorithm in place of a simpler one. The report illustrates problems caused by the complex algorithm and how the simpler algorithm was chosen in the ned. Brief descriptions of the project objectives, approach, and simulation are presented. The misleading simulation results and the conclusions then drawn are presented.
Book Synopsis Analysis of Relative Navigation Architectures for Formation Flying Spacecrafts by : Henry Jacques Lefebvre de Plinval-Salgues
Download or read book Analysis of Relative Navigation Architectures for Formation Flying Spacecrafts written by Henry Jacques Lefebvre de Plinval-Salgues and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) The thesis investigated two additional problems often associated with navigation filters. The first study considers the problem of processing delayed measurements. Three strategies are analyzed, and compared in terms of the accuracy of the estimate they perform, and the memory and computations they require. One of these approach is shown to be efficient, being accurate without requiring heavy computations nor memory. The second study analyzes a particular instability of the Extended Kalman Filter, encountered when two sensors have very different accuracies. The instability is explained and a method to fix it is proposed. In the example analyzed the method proves to be efficient in addressing the instability.
