The floristic inventory is in support of the U.S. Army Land-Condition Trend Analysis (LCTA) program, which is a major component of the Integrated Training Area Management program. The scope of the inventory included both vascular plants and ground-inhabiting cryptogams (mosses, lichens, and liverworts). This floristic record also helps support data needs in response to the Endangered Species Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, and AR 420-74 for Natural Resources-Land, Forest, and Wildlife Management.

Book excerpt: In conjunction with a project to establish long-term vegetation monitoring plots, we conducted a survey of the vascular flora of Elmendorf Air Force Base. The main objectives of the survey were to: identify any rare vascular plants on Elmendorf Air Force Base; document additions to the flora of Elmendorf Air Force Base; insure that the vascular flora of the monitoring plots is accurately documented. We documented 301 vascular plant taxa for Elmendorf Air Force Base of which 99 were new to the base and one species was new to South central Alaska. Five rare vascular plant species (Alaska Natural Heritage Program rank S1-S3) were found.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inventory of the vascular and ground-inhabiting cryptogam flora of Fort Wainwright, in interior Alaska, was conducted during the summer of 1995 to support land management needs related to the impact of training. Primary plant collecting, identification and verification were conducted by the Alaska Natural Heritage Program and the University of Alaska Museum. The work was supervised and the data compiled into a geographic information system by the USA Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory and the USA Waterways Experiment Station. Fort Wainwright covers 370,450 hectares (915,000 acres); it was divided into five areas: 1) the valleys of a cantonment area of base facilities, 2) the slopes and alpine areas of the Yukon-Tanana Uplands, 3) Tanana Flats and associated wetlands, 4) the upland buttes and Blair Lakes area in Tanana Flats, and 5) the floodplains of the Tanana and Chena Rivers. Over 100 sites were visited, with habitats ranging from very dry south-facing slopes to forest, floodplains, wetlands, and alpine tundra. Vascular collections represented 491 species (including subspecies and varieties), included about 26% of Alaska's vascular flora, and are considered to be relatively complete. The cryptogam collections included 219 species, representing 92 mosses, 117 lichens, and lO liverworts. The flora is characteristic of the circumpolarboreal forest and wetlands of both North America and Eurasia, but it also contains alpine and dry-grassland and steppe species.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monumental work by the world's preeminent authority on Arctic floras--the first comprehensive, up-to-date botanic manual for this region--is the product of the author's more than forty years of study of circumpolar floras. The book describes and illustrates all flowering plants and vascular cryptograms known to occur in Alaska, the Yukon, the Mackenzie District, and the eastern extremity of Siberia. Some 1,974 taxa, belonging to 1,559 species, occur in this region; all are described. For 1,735 of these, the book provides detailed description, nomenclature, plant drawing, and range maps. In each case, one map gives distribution in the Alaskan region; a second, on circumpolar projection, gives worldwide range. This volume is the first major flora to assemble such comprehensive range data and to provide such maps. An analytic key to all species described is provided for each genus, and there is an artificial key to families. An Introduction describes the past and present climatic, geologic, and ecologic character of the regions covered, the history of botanical collection in these regions, and the book's treatment of botanical and taxonomic details; and lists the plants of neighboring regions likely to occur. Glossary, plant authors' list, bibliography, and indexes are provided. The superb drawings were prepared by Dagny Tande-Lid, and eight pages of illustration in color are included.
