Book excerpt: In 1931, just four years after Lindbergh flew the Atlantic, Johnny Polando and Russell Boardman left from Floyd Bennett airfield and flew their single engine Bellanca nonstop to Istanbul, Turkey. After 5011 miles in the air, the duo landed with only 15 minutes' fuel remaining in their tanks, but they set the record for long-distance nonstop flight. In recognition of their contribution to aviation, Boardman-Polando field in Hyannis, Massachusetts, was named in their honor on the 50th anniversary of their flight. Two years after this amazing journey, Boardman was killed in a crash, but Polando flew for the rest of his life, mainly in New England. The book recounts his 1934 participation in the 11,123-mile MacRobertson race from England to Australia, in which he and his copilot got only as far as Calcutta after landing in the Persian desert where Polando was briefly held captive by Arabs. And it tells of his experiences as a World War II pilot. Polando's wife, Dorothy, assembled the material for this book and reviewed it with him before his death in 1985.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by gifted storyteller Winston Groom (author of Forrest Gump), The Aviators tells the saga of three extraordinary aviators--Charles Lindbergh, Eddie Rickenbacker, and Jimmy Doolittle--and how they redefine heroism through their genius, daring, and uncommon courage. This is the fascinating story of three extraordinary heroes who defined aviation during the great age of flight. These cleverly interwoven tales of their heart-stopping adventures take us from the feats of World War I through the heroism of World War II and beyond, including daring military raids and survival-at-sea, and will appeal to fans of Unbroken, The Greatest Generation, andFlyboys. With the world in peril in World War II, each man set aside great success and comfort to return to the skies for his most daring mission yet. Doolittle, a brilliant aviation innovator, would lead the daring Tokyo Raid to retaliate for Pearl Harbor; Lindbergh, hero of the first solo flight across the Atlantic, would fly combat missions in the South Pacific; and Rickenbacker, World War I flying ace, would bravely hold his crew together while facing near-starvation and circling sharks after his plane went down in a remote part of the Pacific. Groom's rich narrative tells their intertwined stories--from broken homes to Medals of Honor (all three would receive it); barnstorming to the greatest raid of World War II; front-page triumph to anguished tragedy; and near-death to ultimate survival--as all took to the sky, time and again, to become exemplars of the spirit of the "greatest generation."

Book excerpt: This is a story written by a pilot who followed his father into commercial aviation. It is, on one hand, the biography of a professional pilot and, on other levels, provides us with insight into the mental disciplines necessary to follow such a career path. The story begins with a description of his life as a kid in rural New Jersey and follows him from his first flight to his last, some fifty years latter. As each passage of life ends, a new begins. The author provides us with an understanding of what it means to be a professional aviator and what he has learned along the way about his profession and about life. We see him grow as a person and as a pilot. We see the world through his eyes and gain an appreciation of his accumulated experiences both funny and those no so.Anyone who has spent years looking down on the world most certainly develops a different view of things than those who meander along the surface. This is certainly true of the author who provides the reader with a sense of his understanding along the way.

Book excerpt: In the spirit of Loving Frank and The Paris Wife, acclaimed novelist Melanie Benjamin pulls back the curtain on the marriage of one of America’s most extraordinary couples: Charles Lindbergh and Anne Morrow Lindbergh. “The history [is] exhilarating. . . . The Aviator’s Wife soars.”—USA Today NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER When Anne Morrow, a shy college senior with hidden literary aspirations, travels to Mexico City to spend Christmas with her family, she meets Colonel Charles Lindbergh, fresh off his celebrated 1927 solo flight across the Atlantic. Enthralled by Charles’s assurance and fame, Anne is certain the aviator has scarcely noticed her. But she is wrong. Charles sees in Anne a kindred spirit, a fellow adventurer, and her world will be changed forever. The two marry in a headline-making wedding. In the years that follow, Anne becomes the first licensed female glider pilot in the United States. But despite this and other major achievements, she is viewed merely as the aviator’s wife. The fairy-tale life she once longed for will bring heartbreak and hardships, ultimately pushing her to reconcile her need for love and her desire for independence, and to embrace, at last, life’s infinite possibilities for change and happiness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When his student and close friend Oliver Smithies accepted his Nobel Prize in Medicine and Physiology, he singled Field out as someone who was important in his life, saying, "Field Morey, a distinguished flight instructor taught me to fly...but he taught me something more important than flying. He taught me that it is possible to overcome fear with knowledge." During his four years above the earth, throughout fifty-eight years of teaching more than one thousand pilots, Field overcame fear, faced weather, set records, had abundant fun...and as he puts it, "learned from my students...probably more than I taught." Since he grew up in an aviation family, it was expected that Field would fly. A contemporary of Charles Lindbergh, his father, Howard, taught him about airplanes, about operating an airport, about character and responsibility, while Lindbergh inspired him to imagine more and aim higher. Twice the FAA named Field Flight Instructor of the Year. Later, his name was added to the Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award. Along with Oliver Smithies, the pair set a world record, and when the Aviation Hall of Fame inducted him, it was a career highlight. In this memoir, Field recounts his coming-of-age in aviation and relates stories of memorable flights and remarkable adventures. With an awareness that his story is also his students' story, he recognizes the privilege of having been born when he was and pays tribute to his father, Howard Morey, an exemplary aviation pioneer, by thanking him every day for guiding him in the right direction. Yes, this is a story about flying, but it is much more. It is a study of how excellence evolves, not always in a linear progression, but with passion and vision.

Book excerpt: This improbable aviation adventure will take you on a thirty-six year journey from five-star hotels to back alleys and greasy cargo ramps. Join the author, Ace Abbott, on a roller coaster ride of an aviation career, as he transitions from hobnobbing with international icons, like Jimmy Buffett, to bartering in order to get some critical jet fuel. The author s primary source of motivation in writing his story is the desire to share a wonderful adventure with pilots of all backgrounds who have had similar careers and to inform aspiring pilots of the unique nuances of an aviation career. Twenty-five employers later, you will get to ride on Ace's final flight in a 727 while you gain insight into the potential catastrophe of a pilot s brief but potentially fatal inattention. This aviation exposé will introduce the reader to aspects of aviation never before seen from the previously unexplored dark side of commercial aviation. The secondary theme of this book is very relevant to the current front and center news topic of aviation safety. Included in The Rogue Aviator is an insider s look at commercial aviation and the FAA. With today s focus on aviation safety and the role of the FAA to insure our safety in the air, the author addresses his thoughts on these vital areas.

Book excerpt: But for the Grace of God is not just the autobiography of astronaut and aviator, William R. "Bill" Pogue. "Competently and directly, he guides the reader through a half-century of technological advance," says Mike Collins, Apollo11. Bill Pogue describes the crucible in which he was raised, lived, and worked -- the crucible that made him an exceptional man and one of our nation¿s finest aviators and astronauts. The honesty and work ethic of country life, love of flying, stresses of being a fighter pilot in the Korean War, demands on a Thunderbird pilot, and challenges of a test pilot all prepared him for his lead role on Skylab, America¿s first space station. He packages his adventure-filled life into easy-to-read, inspiring tales that move swiftly. They are filled with his reverence for family, God, nature, and mankind. Whether engaging the enemy in combat, flying metal-bending aerobatics with the Thunderbirds, or setting records for distance and endurance in Skylab, Bill speaks clearly but modestly with compelling authority. "This is a keeper -- a book all parents should provide their children to show how good life can be when lived to its fullest," says Walter J. Boyne, Former Director, National Air & Space Museum; and Enshrinee, National Aviation Hall of Fame. Alan Bean, Apollo 12 Astronaut and Fourth Man to Set Foot on the Moon, says, "But for the Grace of God will serve as a life-changing inspiration for many. It is a must read for anyone interested in space exploration."
