The house is a large, one-story, double structure, standing in its own spacious grounds. A large hall, more than ninety feet long, runs through the midst of it. There we spent two days with our host, enjoying every moment of our stay. Flowers and roses were on every hand, and great trees with grateful shade, and the songs of many birds, and the pealing laughter of young folk, and the quiet happiness of those who loved to see others happy all about them.[...]".

Book excerpt: A flight investigation has been conducted of an automatic gust-alleviation system designed primarily to improve riding comfort in rough air. The gusts were sensed by a vane located on a boom ahead of the airplane. The wing flags moved in response to the vane in such a way as to counteract the change in wing lift due to the gust and a portion of the elevator moved to counteract pitching moments due to flap deflection. In the final configurations, inboard portions of the wing flaps also moved in such a way as to counteract the change in angle of attack at the tail due to the gust. The result indicate alleviation of normal acceleration of up to about 60 percent at the natural frequency of the airplane (0.6 cycle per second) and about 40 percent at 2 cycles per second. A further increase in riding comfort was achieved by a simultaneous alleviation of pitching velocity. For this particular airplane, gusts having frequencies greater than 1.5 cycles per second at a speed of 130 knots had little effect on riding comfort. Brief tests were also made of a configuration intended for reducing structural loads and of a configuration utilizing an accelerometer as the gust sensor. The gust alleviation capabilities of these configurations were somewhat less than that of the optimum configuration with vane-type gust sensor.

The first chapters cover basic mechanism fundamentals that are relevant to flight control systems. Next is chapters on cable systems, gearing systems and power screws. Hydraulic and electromechanical actuation are also discussed. From here, the book addresses general aspects of flight control systems, including fly by wire systems. After this secondary systems (high lift, spoilers, trim) and primary flight control for each axis are discussed - each in stand-alone chapters. Reversible, irreversible and fly by wire systems are discussed for each axis. The final chapter goes into system fault detection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An adjustable feel system connected to the longitudinal control system of a transonic fighter airplane has been developed and has been evaluated in flight. Variable control feel including response feel is provided from the following five sources: control position, control rate, normal acceleration, pitching velocity, and pitching acceleration. This system provides a very flexible tool for more detailed study of longitudinal control feel characteristics than has previously been possible. The evaluation program for the variable-feel system yielded flight time histories which illustrate effects on the stability of airplane and control-system response modes of large amounts of response feel. These results illustrate the need for balancing the amounts of feel from normal acceleration and pitching acceleration to maintain the stability of the short-period and control-system modes. At the frequency of the short-period mode, large amounts of normal-acceleration feel cause the control system to oscillate and excite the airplane short-period mode of oscillation. At the same frequency the pitching acceleration component of feel, which leads the normal-acceleration component by 180 deg, is almost equivalent to viscous damping on the stick. However, at slightly frequencies the lag of the response-feel components increases by 90 deg or more so that a large pitching-acceleration component excites an oscillation of the control system at 4 cycles per second. These results by confirming and supplementing the conclusions of previous observers indicate that the adjustable feel system is operating properly.

Book excerpt: A flight investigation has been conducted on a typical high-wing personal-owner airplane to determine the effect of control centering springs on apparent spiral stability. The centering springs were used in both the aileron and rudder control systems to provide both a positive centering action and a means of trimming the airplane.
