Book excerpt: From the highly acclaimed author of The Photographer of the Lost, a BBC Radio 2 Book Club Pick, comes a tale of a young war widow and one life-changing, sun-drenched visit to Cornwall in the summer of 1923... Esme Nicholls is to spend the summer in Cornwall. Her late husband Alec, who died fighting in the war, grew up in Penzance, and she’s hoping to learn more about the man she loved and lost. While there, she will stay with Gilbert, in his rambling seaside house, where he lives with his former brothers in arms. Esme is fascinated by this community of eccentric artists and former soldiers, and as she gets to know the men and their stories, she begins to feel this summer might be exactly what she needs. But everything is not as idyllic as it seems – a mysterious new arrival later in the summer will turn Esme’s world upside down, and make her question everything she thought she knew about her life, and the people in it. Full of light, laughter and larger-than-life characters, The Visitors is a novel of one woman finally finding her voice and choosing her own path forwards. Book Synopsis The Visitor by : Liam Matthew Brockey
Download or read book The Visitor written by Liam Matthew Brockey and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an age when few people ventured beyond their place of birth, André Palmeiro left Portugal on a journey to the far side of the world. Bearing the title “Father Visitor,” he was entrusted with the daunting task of inspecting Jesuit missions spanning from Mozambique to Japan. A global history in the guise of a biography, The Visitor tells the story of a theologian whose extraordinary travels bore witness to the fruitful contact—and violent collision—of East and West in the early modern era. In India, Palmeiro was thrust into a controversy over the missionary tactics of Roberto Nobili, who insisted on dressing the part of an indigenous ascetic. Palmeiro walked across Southern India to inspect Nobili’s mission, recording fascinating observations along the way. As the highest-ranking Jesuit in India, he also coordinated missions to the Mughal Emperors and the Ethiopian Christians, as well as the first European explorations of the East African interior and the highlands of Tibet. Orders from Rome sent Palmeiro farther afield in 1626, to Macau, where he oversaw Jesuit affairs in East Asia. He played a crucial role in creating missions in Vietnam and seized the opportunity to visit the Chinese mission, trekking thousands of miles to Beijing as one of China’s first Western tourists. When the Tokugawa Shogunate brutally cracked down on Christians in Japan—where neither he nor any Westerner had power to intervene—Palmeiro died from anxiety over the possibility that the last Jesuits still alive would apostatize under torture.

Many travellers returned thinking they knew Asia and their personal experiences helped shape popular attitudes. This absorbing book unpacks their experiences, showing how their encounters changed the way Australians thought about themselves in the world.Visiting the Neighbours tells the story of Australian relations with Asia from the bottom up, examining the experiences of some of the millions of travellers and tourists who headed to the region over more than a hundred years. Merchants, missionaries, pilgrims, soldiers, hippies, diplomats, backpackers all had an impact on diplomacy and international relations. Agnieszka Sobocinska’s book is a bold and important step in understanding the intersection between popular opinion, prejudice and international relations as Australia stands at the precipice of the Asian Century.‘Sets out a range of fascinating and different roles played by Australians in Asia.’ – Michael Wesley, author of There Goes the Neighbourhood: Australia and the rise of Asia.‘ … Puts travel to Asia firmly on the 'Asia-literacy' map. This is not only a richly detailed, subtly argued and historically informed study of the Australian traveller in Asia. It is also smart, sharp and a very good read.’ – David Walker, BHP Billiton Chair of Australian Studies, Peking University.

Download or read book Visitors written by Ann Snitow and published by New Village Press. This book was released on 2020-03-24 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A feminist organizer in East Central Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall reveals the struggles of women fighting for their rights during the rise of the Right in Europe Visitors tells the story of Ann Snitow’s adventures as a Western feminist helping to build a new, post-communist feminist movement in Eastern Central Europe. Snitow stumbles onto this fast-changing, chaotic scene by chance, but falls in love with the passionate feminists she meets in Poland, the former Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia, Hungary and Romania. What kinds of feminism should they hope for? Visitors is a book about forging enduring relationships and creating formerly unimaginable institutions—a feminist school, the Network of East-West Women, women’s centers, gender studies programs. It is about unity amid fractiousness and perseverance through uncertainty, Snitow’s flickering lodestar. Visitors moves gracefully between vivid anecdote, political analysis, and unsparing introspection. It is richly peopled with “brilliant” comrades and vexing detractors alike, all described with respect and humor. Every sentence is imbued with the experience and insight of this sui generis feminist activist, writer, and pedagogue of 50 years. Most of all, Visitors is the story of friendship, the heart and sinew of the leaderless feminist movement. Reading like the best historical novel, it is intimate and worldly, resolutely unsentimental yet finally, even as the political skies darken, optimistic in the conviction that feminism can make life meaningful, fascinating, fun, pleasurable—and better for everyone, even as better is redefined again and again.

Yeats and Robert Hayden in a wonderfully intimate selection of poems. Book Synopsis I Am 7.5 Billion Human by : Sajith Buvi
Download or read book I Am 7.5 Billion Human written by Sajith Buvi and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-08-13 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yes, those nice words help. Yes, those hugs do help. But how can those nice words and hugs keep me from feeling what I feel? When the burden of pain lurks in my heart and weighs me down within the depths of me, where should I turn to get rid of that burden? I do not seek pacification. I do not seek comforting words intersected with your vocal cord-manufactured sounds of compassion. I seek total detachment from my pain. I seek unplugging the experience of pain from my heart. I cry to disentangle that pain from my depths. Do you hear my cry? You don't get it. How can you? The pain is in me. The pain lives inside me. Right here, inside me. Do you get it? Literally, I can feel the weight of pain in my heart. It sits as heavy as a boulder, unmoving, unrelenting. My suffering is an experience locked within my body. It is not some kind of a visitor. It stays there right in between my belly and throat. No amount of your contrived kindness helps in ebbing that persistent experience.
Book Synopsis Festivals, Tourism and Social Change by : David Picard
Download or read book Festivals, Tourism and Social Change written by David Picard and published by Channel View Publications. This book was released on 2006-10-12 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the links between tourism and festivals and the various ways in which each mobilises the other to make social realities meaningful. Drawing upon a series of international cases, festivals are examined as ways of responding to various forms of crisis - social, political, economic - and as a way of re-making and re-animating spaces and social life. Importantly, this book locates festivals in the constantly changing, socio-economic and political contexts that they always operate in and respond to - contexts that are both historical and modern at the same time. Tourism is bound closely together with such contexts; feeding and challenging festivals with audiences that are increasingly transient and transnational. Tourism interrogates notions of ritual and tradition, shapes new spaces and creates, and renews, relationships between participants and observers. No longer can we dismiss tourists simply as value neutral and crass consumers of spectacle, nor tourism as some inevitable commercial force. Tourism is increasingly complicit in the festival processes of re-invention, and in forming new patterns of social existence.
