Book excerpt: A numerical method for solving the equations for laminar, transitional, and turbulent compressible boundary layers for either planar or axisymmetric flows is presented. The fully developed turbulent region is treated by replacing the Reynolds stress terms with an eddy viscosity model. The mean properties of the transitional boundary layer are calculated by multiplying the eddy viscosity by an intermittency function based on the statistical production and growth of the turbulent spots. A specifiable turbulent Prandtl number relates the turbulent flux of heat to the eddy viscosity. A three-point implicit finite-difference scheme is used to solve the system of equations. The momentum and energy equations are solved simultaneously without iteration. Numerous test cases are compared with experimental data for supersonic and hypersonic flows; these cases include flows with both favorable and mildly unfavorable pressure gradient histories, mass flux at the wall, and traverse curvature.

The explicit scheme employed in the numerical method in conjunction with a set of compatibility conditions at the wall provides an accurate and efficient method of solution for the compressible boundary layer. From investigations of the decay of a disturbance in an incompressible zero pressure gradient flow a characteristic length is obtained beyond which local similarity may be taken as fully established independently of the initial velocity profiles. An analysis of the slot injection problem indicates that the pertinent parameters for slot cooling are the mass flow and stagnation temperature of the coolant. The effect of initial profiles must be included in those cases where transition is feasible. (Author).

Regular solutions are obtained with an inverse approach in which either the displacement thickness or the skin friction is specified; the pressure is deduced from the solution. A vorticity--stream-function formulation of the boundary-layer equations is used to eliminate the unknown pressure. Solutions of the resulting finite-difference equations, in which the flow direction is taken into account, are obtained by several global iteration schemes which are stable and have unconditional diagonal dominance. Results are compared with Klineberg and Steger's separated boundary-layer calculations, and with Briley's solution of the Navier-Stokes equations for a separated region. In addition, an approximate technique is presented in which the streamwise convection of vorticity is set equal to zero in the reversed flow region; such a technique results in a quick forward-marching procedure for separated flows.
