This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective treatment of nitrogen containing wastewater is required to prevent eutrophication and groundwater pollution. This thesis shows that effective treatment may be combined with substantial nitrogen recovery in duckweed-based waste stabilization ponds.
Book Synopsis Wastewater Treatment with Algae by : Yuk Shan Kwong
Download or read book Wastewater Treatment with Algae written by Yuk Shan Kwong and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together environmental scientists and engineers to discuss the development of new approaches and methodologies which utilize microalgae for biological wastewater treatment. The researchers report their recent findings on microalgal removal of nutrients, heavy metals and other organic pollutants from sewage and industrial effluents. The technologies discussed here include biosorption and bioaccumulation of heavy metals, cell immobilization of algae, and mathematical modelling of metal uptake by cells. This book is unique in that it takes a practical approach to the subject matter and is a useful reference both in and outside of the laboratory.

Book Synopsis Mathematical Modelling of Nutrients in Facultative Waste Stabilisation Ponds by : Faridah Binti Abu Hassan Asaari
Download or read book Mathematical Modelling of Nutrients in Facultative Waste Stabilisation Ponds written by Faridah Binti Abu Hassan Asaari and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, various dynamic models related to facultative wastewater stabilisation pond(FWSP) have been studied. It is concluded that existing dynamic models of FWSP only include a simplistic model of the regeneration of nutrients from benthal region to water column. As a result of this, a new mathematical model which considers the sediment and water column interactions has been developed. This model is divided into two parts which are water column nutrient submodel and sediment nutrient submodel. In the former submodel, all the biochemical reactions as described by Fritz[1985] plus precipitation, adsorption, volatilisation of ammonia and organic matter settlings were included. In the latter, the work of van Der Molen[1991] on modelling phosphorus release from lake sediments is extended and adapted to include nitrogen and carbon exchanges in FWSP. The model has been calibrated against data from a pond in New Mexico [Larsen, 1974] and validated using a data set from a pond in South-West Ireland treating dairy waste [Hunter,1992]. Sensitivity studies on the model various coefficients were done to determine their stability in the model. A statistical t-distribution for the paired comparison between observed and computed values was also carried out. All the computed values are significant within the 95 percent level except for ammonia. Results show a good correlation between the measured values and those predicted by the computer simulation. From this study, the fate of nutrients in FWSP has been highlighted. This will guide the future monitoring efforts as the model has indicated the important processes that appear to control effluent water quality in ponds, and thus indicate areas for further study.
Book Synopsis Municipal Waste Water Treatment by : M. Negulescu
Download or read book Municipal Waste Water Treatment written by M. Negulescu and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2011-08-19 with total page 597 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Population growth and increasing industrial development makes the efficient treatment of municipal waste water of vital concern. This book describes the design of various treatment processes which have proved to be most effective, among which are included: skimming tanks with corrugated plates or circular tubes, package treatment units (grit removal - skimming tanks, activated sludge - secondary settling tanks) etc. For each of the processes described, the author gives all the relevant information concerning the design and operation of the equipment. Examples of design calculations are provided, many of them using computer methods. Sketches, diagrams and tables accompany the text and a bibliography and keyword index is provided. The book is addressed to design engineers as well as to the wide range of specialists in fields connected to waste water treatment.

Book Synopsis Wastewater Management Through Aquaculture by : B. B. Jana
Download or read book Wastewater Management Through Aquaculture written by B. B. Jana and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides state-of-the-art information on soil-water interactions in wastewater systems, characterization of wastewater, modes of treatment, safety of wastewater use, water conservation technologies involved in recycling of sewage in fish culture, biogeochemical cycling bacteria and nutrient dynamics, ecosystem resilient driven wastewater reclamation, bioremediation, aquaponics, ecological integrity, culture practices of fish farming, microbial food web phenomena, fish diseases, environmental economics of wastewater, environmental risk assessment, environmental law and regulations. Given its breadth of coverage, the book will be useful to researchers, teachers, students, administrators, planners, farmers and entrepreneurs interested in the profitable use of wastewater in the wastes-into-wealth framework of for the benefit of humanity, and in achieving the targets for sanitation and safe wastewater reuse by 2030, specified in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Concerns are growing about the quality and quantity of fresh water, as severe crises are expected in the near future. Climate change has further worsened the strain on inland water resources, with its major impacts on ecosystems and human life. It is most urgent to protect and conserve inland water resources to maintain vital ecosystem functions. Despite the immense nutrient potentials of wastewater in terms of phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium and increasingly high rates of urbanization-based wastewater generation, wastewater has traditionally been overlooked as a resource. This produces a threefold loss – environmental degradation, monetary losses from fertilizers, and water. As a result, municipal wastewater offers a win-win strategy for water conservation and environmental protection, while also turning waste into wealth in the form of fish biomass and allied cash crops. Wastewater-fed aquaculture refers to a unique, integrated biosystem in which the wastes generated by the first system are used by the next subsystem. In wastewater-fed aquaculture biosystems, the organic wastes are recycled into fish biomass mediated through a complex microbial/autotrophic/heterotrophic food web mechanism.
