Examining the development of Free Trade policy in Japan and South Korea since the late 1990s, Choi and Oh analyse the role of political, institutional, sectoral, and civil society factors in placing the two countries on different paths at different points in time. Systematically approaching this issue from each perspective in turn, they expose the domestic political underpinnings of the free trade system. A valuable textbook for students of international political economy and international trade in East Asia, particularly those focussing on Japan and South Korea. It's also a useful resource for scholars and policymakers looking to better understand the dynamics of free trade policy in East Asia"--

Book Synopsis A Japan-UAE FTA by : Abdulaziz Istaitieh
Download or read book A Japan-UAE FTA written by Abdulaziz Istaitieh and published by Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research. This book was released on 2008-07-29 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While oil is still the mainstay of the UAE’s economy today, its dominance is receding due to the rapid expansion of the roles played by other economic sectors such as trade, tourism and finance. To reflect this, a critical chapter has been added to the UAE policy book titled “International Openness.” This covers many areas in which Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) are considered to be a vital instrument that will assist the growing UAE economy to make its mark globally. The history of FTAs with the UAE goes back to 1983 when a free trade area was created with the other GCC member states (i.e., Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia), which was extended to a Customs Union in 2003. Recently, the UAE has begun exclusive as well as collective negotiations (i.e., with the GCC as one bloc) for FTAs with countries such as China, India, Pakistan, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia, Turkey, the European Union (EU) and the United States. The proposed Japan–UAE FTA is expected to enhance bilateral trade in services in some sectors more than others. In the case of investment there are no deep economic links between the UAE and Japan in terms of foreign direct investment (FDI). Therefore, promoting joint investment is necessary. If limited access concessions are bilaterally accorded to the services sectors, then one might doubt the extent to which the proposed FTA would be beneficial—except for trade in goods. In this case, Japan would be the one to gain more from the FTA given the present trade surplus that it has with the UAE. International experience shows that a FTA between a developed country (e.g., Japan) and a developing/emerging country (e.g., UAE) usually results in encouraging more exports from the former to the latter than vice-versa. However, mechanisms can be used to lessen the likely gap between the expected benefits for both parties, such as duality of the liberalization pace and incorporation of revisions or transition clauses. The proposed FTA between the UAE and Japan would result in economic benefits and costs for both parties, as is the case for FTAs in general. However, in order to decide whether to proceed with a FTA, gains must outweigh losses for the involved countries. In general, the UAE must give Japan concessions similar to those proposed to other FTA countries (especially in sectors where Japan possesses a competitive advantage) in order to create competition and increase economic welfare, which would result in reaping maximum benefits.

Book Synopsis Beyond Japan by : Peter J. Katzenstein
Download or read book Beyond Japan written by Peter J. Katzenstein and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-05 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have Japan's relative economic decline and China's rapid ascent altered the dynamics of Asian regionalism? Peter Katzenstein and Takashi Shiraishi, the editors of Network Power, one of the most comprehensive volumes on East Asian regionalism in the 1990s, present here an impressive new collection that brings the reader up to date. This book argues that East Asia's regional dynamics are no longer the result of a simple extension of any one national model. While Japanese institutional structures and political practices remain critically important, the new East Asia now under construction is more than, and different from, the sum of its various national parts. At the outset of a new century, the interplay of Japanese factors with Chinese, American, and other national influences is producing a distinctively new East Asian region.

Book Synopsis Economic and Environmental Impact of Free Trade in East and South East Asia by : Kakali Mukhopadhyay
Download or read book Economic and Environmental Impact of Free Trade in East and South East Asia written by Kakali Mukhopadhyay and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-18 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the East and South East Asian region has witnessed a rapid expansion of regional economic cooperation through bilateral and plurilateral free trade agreements. The current book attempts to comprehensively analyze the economic and environmental impacts of regional economic integration in East and South East Asia to the year 2020. This region has some of the fastest growing economies of the world. A global economic model was used to undertake the analysis. A rare feature of the book is the detailed environmental implications of the Regional Trade Agreements focusing on air, water, and waste pollution. Economic integration among the East and South East Asian region has been an important agenda item for the academic and policy communities in recent years. The study provides insight into pursuing a concrete multilateral trade liberalization policy (combining ASEAN and other countries in East Asia) and throws more light on the on-going trade and environment debate. This book will be a good addition to the field of trade and the environment. The academic community – primarily researchers and policy makers, and world bodies, such as the WTO, ADB and the World Bank, will benefit from the book.
Book Synopsis Asia's Free Trade Agreements by : Masahiro Kawai
Download or read book Asia's Free Trade Agreements written by Masahiro Kawai and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: East Asia is the region of the world that is changing fastest in terms of trade arrangements. Dozens of free-trade agreements are signed every year, turning a complex situation into the East Asian noodle bowl of FTAs. This book addresses the crucial question posed by these new agreements how do they affect business? While many studies have focused on government-to-government issues, this book gets to the heart of the matter, studying what it means for the firms actually doing the trade and investment. I recommend this book to any serious student of trade, particularly those interested in understanding the rapidly evolving landscape in this most dynamic part of the world. Richard Baldwin, Professor of International Economics, Graduate Institute, Geneva, Switzerland The pursuit of more than one hundred Free Trade Agreements in East Asia is quietly producing a fundamental change in the global economic architecture. This path-breaking new volume provides an indispensable guide to the practical effect of such agreements on commercial transactions in the region. It is a must-read for businessmen and policymakers who seek to both understand the impact of FTAs in the real world and expand their contributions to economic growth and development. C. Fred Bergsten, Director, Peterson Institute for International Economics, US [East Asia] needs to think about appropriate measures to overcome the Asian FTA noodle bowl in the future. In this vein, the study suggests several practical measures including encouraging rationalization and flexibility of rules of origin, upgrading origin administration, improving business participation in FTA consultations, and strengthening institutional support systems for SMEs. . . It is hoped that this study will contribute to strengthening regional trade policies in Asia and compatibilities with global trade rules. Haruhiko Kuroda, President, Asian Development Bank This is a valuable contribution in a crowded field. Kawai and Wignaraja have gone beyond familiar arguments about the relative merits of regionalism and multilateralism to ask businesses what it all means to them. Policymakers should take note. Patrick Low, Chief Economist, WTO For policymakers in the region, the debate is no longer between regionalism and multilateralism. The real question is how we should create the model for regionalism that will become the building blocks to a multilateral trading system and avoid raising costs of doing business from the noodle bowl effect. Therefore the comparative and micro-level research found in this book provides valuable insights on the impact of FTAs on businesses. These insights will be relevant input as policymakers forge ahead in implementing regional FTAs, thinking of ways to amend and improve on them and, most importantly, harmonize or consolidate between existing regional FTAs in East Asia. Mari Pangestu, Minister of Trade, Indonesia The spread of Asia s free trade agreements (FTAs) has sparked an important debate on the impact of such agreements on business activity. This pioneering study uses new evidence from surveys of East Asian exporters including Japan, the People s Republic of China, the Republic of Korea and three ASEAN economies of the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand to shed light on the FTA debate. Critics are concerned that FTAs erode the multilateral trading process and foster an alarming noodle bowl of overlapping regulations and rules of origin requirements which may be costly to business. Asia s Free Trade Agreements makes key recommendations for improving business use of FTA preferences, reducing costs of FTAs and creating a region-wide FTA. This well-researched and documented book will appeal to undergraduate and postgraduate students in international business, international economics, economic development, public administration and public policy. Academics, researchers and members of think-tanks around the world will also benefit from this book as will trad
