Book excerpt: We'd be hard put to decide whether Barry Fisher is better at fishing or storytelling. The three stories in this book are rollicking gems, salty as a flake of cod set out to dry. "A Wharf Rat's Tale" takes us to Gloucester, Massachusetts, a town where, "if you didn't go fishing, you got out of town." It was a fascinating, adventurous place for a boy in the late '30s, as young Barry and his pals pick up odd jobs on the wharves, repair a beat-up dory, hang out with the schooner crews, and take up fishing themselves, catching the fattest flounders at the sewer outfall in the harbor. Barry Fisher went offshore dory-fishing for real when he was eighteen, and "A Doryman's Day," he says now, is "as accurate as my old mind can make it." He describes fishing longline trawl gear from Grand Banks dories launched off the deck of a schooner in wonderful detail and paints a vivid picture of a working day in a fishery straight out of history. A few years later, he went on a late-season swordfishing trip, dory-fishing from a schooner with a crew betting against the weather and the odds that they'd come home with a catch. "Mysterious Ways of the Lord, or How Captain Jack Brant of the Swordfishing Schooner lorna b Found God in a Split Second and then Achieved Salvation on the Northern Edge of George's Bank" gives you just a hint of the story to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when the oceans are emptied of all their fish? What happens when three hundred years of human knowledge and expertise disappear before the onslaught of the technology-driven world? The Doryman’s Reflection is simply the most accurate and eloquent account of what transpired in the New England fisheries over the past half century, as told by the people who lived it, including author Paul Molyneaux. Fishermen survive as relics, the last hunter-gatherers among us. Their boats, crammed with ropes and nets, carry the mystique of a nearly forgotten world ruled by the elements. Now an accomplished writer, Molyneaux as a young man journeyed to Maine with no experience and a dream of working on a boat. This is the story of his apprenticeship with Bernard Raynes, one of Maine’s last independent commercial fishermen. The Doryman’s Reflection speaks to those who want to know what really happened, and what will happen, on our oceans. Part coming-of-age memoir, part biography, it is a very personal account of what families in this dying but important industry face each day. Molyneaux shares his own history as a young man seeking the fisherman’s life in Maine and Alaska. Originally published in 2005, it has been thoroughly updated to cover the events of the past ten years. Told through the life of the colorful and engaging Bernard Raynes, The Doryman’s Reflection is alive and real and powerful—far from a dry, pedantic treatise on the economics of commercial fishing.

Book excerpt: Wise, wry, and witty essays on fatherhood from Chris Erskine, the beloved columnist for the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune. “Charming, well written, concise, and to the point. Perfect for anyone who enjoys stories of fatherhood.” — Library Journal Life is never peaceful in Chris Erskine's house, what with the four kids, 300-pound beagle, chronically leaky roof, and long-suffering wife, Posh. And that's exactly the way he likes it, except when he doesn't. Every week in the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune (and now and then in many other papers), Erskine distills, mocks, and makes us laugh at the absurdities of suburban fatherhood. And now, he's gathered the very best of these witty and wise essays—and invited his kids (and maybe even Posh) to annotate them with updated commentary, which they promise won't be too snarky. This handsome book is the perfect gift for the father who would have everything—if he hadn't already given it all to his kids.

Book excerpt: ** A FINANCIAL TIMES, NEW STATESMAN AND GUARDIAN BOOK OF THE YEAR ** 'A must read for anyone wanting to understand where the roots of our sense of a nation originated' - Janina Ramirez, bestselling author of Femina 'A sharp new history of longing for the good old days' - Financial Times 'Our national story is so much stranger than we think- this book brilliantly insists that we look at it afresh' - James Hawes, bestselling author of The Shortest History of England ____________________________________________________ How has nostalgia shaped Britain? Modern politicians implore us to draw on the 'Blitz Spirit' of wartime Britain, post-war Britons mourned the lost innocence of Edwardian life, anxious Edwardians longed to return to a golden era of Victorian optimism, while Victorian artists dreamt of retreating to a medieval, pre-industrial age. Longing to go back to the 'good old days' is nothing new, but it's also not what it used to be. Rule, Nostalgia is an eye-opening history of Britain's perennial fixation with its own past that explores why nostalgia has been such an enduring and seductive emotion across hundreds of years of change. Cultural historian Hannah Rose Woods paints a novel picture of Britain, both strange and familiar, separating the fact from the fantasy, debunking pervasive myths and illuminating the remarkable influence that nostalgia's perpetual backwards glance has had on our history, politics and society over the last five hundred years. This is a timely and enlightening interrogation of national character, emotion, identity and myth making that explores how this nostalgic isle's history was written, re-written and (rightly or wrongly) remembered.
