Book excerpt: Step into the world of societal expectations and personal liberation with Henrik Ibsen's groundbreaking play, "A Doll's House." This poignant narrative follows Nora Helmer, a seemingly content wife, as she grapples with the constraints of her marriage and the roles imposed on her by society. As the story unfolds, Ibsen masterfully reveals the complexities of marriage, gender roles, and individual identity. Nora's journey of self-discovery challenges the traditional notions of femininity and duty, making this play a timeless exploration of personal freedom and societal norms. But here’s the provocative question that will ignite your curiosity: What happens when a woman decides to reclaim her autonomy in a world that expects her to conform? Nora’s bold choices lead to dramatic revelations that resonate deeply with audiences, prompting reflection on the nature of love and sacrifice. With its rich character development and powerful dialogue, "A Doll's House" remains a cornerstone of modern theater. Ibsen's unflinching examination of societal expectations encourages readers to confront their own beliefs about relationships and personal agency. Are you ready to witness Nora's transformative journey as she challenges the confines of her domestic life? This play is essential for anyone interested in literature that examines social issues and the human condition. Ibsen's compelling storytelling invites audiences to engage with the fundamental questions of identity, duty, and freedom. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience this revolutionary work. Purchase "A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen" today and join the conversation about the roles we play in our own lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secrets. Lies. Love. Lust. Betrayal. Freedom. Experience one of the most iconic plays of all time in this brand-new adaptation of Henrik Ibsen's classic play A Doll's House. Nora Helmer is a typical upper middle-class housewife living an exquisitely divine life, as she would say. But there's much more below the surface than she's willing to let on! When an old friend shows up unexpectedly on Christmas Eve, it sets off a chain of events that, over the course of three days, changes Nora's life forever. While this is more of an adaptation than a literal translation, Henrik Ibsen wrote that "I consider it most important that the dialogue in the translations be kept as close to ordinary, everyday speech as possible...I believe that a translator should employ the style which the original author would have used if he had written in the language of those who are to read him in translation." This adaptation honors Ibsen's original dialogue and intentions (many of which had been lost in translation) while also making the dialogue sound like it was meant for actors today instead of the Victorian-era. Keep in mind that Ibsen had always intended for this play to be set in the present, not the past. How can we do that when the circumstances of the play are so rooted in the time in which the play was written? We can't set it in the present day because the characters wouldn't behave this way in the present. However, if we set the language in the present day while keeping everything else in the past, the circumstances of the play will work while also feeling like it belongs "in the present."

Book excerpt: The book discusses responses to Ibsen, especially those of George Bernard Shaw and William Archer in London, and the relationship of the play to issues of theatrical censorship. (More modern treatments, like the remarkable ones by Ingmar Bergman and by Fassbinder, are also covered.) The character of Nora leads into a discussion of feminism, and her relationship with Torvald and the performance of the crucial tarantella is sensitively discussed.

Book excerpt: 'You've lies in the whites of your eyes, Nora. What have you done...?' Nora is the perfect wife and mother. She is dutiful, beautiful and everything is always in its right place. But when a secret from her past comes back to haunt her, her life rapidly unravels. Over the course of three days, Nora must fight to protect herself and her family or risk losing everything. Henrik Ibsen's brutal portrayal of womanhood caused outrage when it was first performed in 1879. This bold new version by Stef Smith reframes the drama in three different time periods. The fight for women's suffrage, the Swinging Sixties and the modern day intertwine in this urgent, poetic play that asks how far have we really come in the past hundred years? Nora : A Doll's House was first produced by the Citizens Theatre, Glasgow, in 2019, at Tramway, Glasgow. A new production opened at the Young Vic, London, in February 2020. It was a finalist for the 2020 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, awarded annually to celebrate women who have written works of outstanding quality for the English-speaking theatre.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These three timeless plays showcase the sparkling wit and provocative intellect of some of modern drama’s greatest playwrights. Saint Joan by George Bernard Shaw: This complex drama depicts the life of Joan of Arc—from her childhood vision calling her to lead the French army against the English in the Hundred Years War through her eventual capture, trial, and burning at the stake. An epilogue depicts a retrial that clears Joan of heresy, declaring her a Christian martyr. An Ideal Husband by Oscar Wilde: In this timeless drawing room comedy, a blackmail scheme forces a married couple to reexamine their moral standards—providing a wry commentary on the hypocrisy of politicians. Carried along by nonstop witty repartee, this is satirical theater at its finest. A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen: This quintessential work of dramatic realism depicts one woman’s struggle against patriarchal society. The central character’s rejection of a smothering marriage shocked theatergoers of the late nineteenth century while the play’s pioneering style set the stage for twentieth century domestic drama.
