Book Synopsis Hot Bituminous Pavement QC&QA Projects Constructed in 1996 Under QPM 2 Specifications by : Bud A. Brakey
Download or read book Hot Bituminous Pavement QC&QA Projects Constructed in 1996 Under QPM 2 Specifications written by Bud A. Brakey and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents Tables and Figures which summarize the HBP Quality Level Analysis (QLA) for projects completed in 1996, the second season using the latest significant revision to the specifications. The quality Level (QL) for the elements (sieve analysis, asphalt content, and pavement density) and the item composites are summarized. While QL determines Pay Factor (PF), it is also used to rank contractors' performance. The item QL improved 1.3 percentage points in 1996 over 1995. But the incentive/disincentive payments were not sufficient to cause some of the contractors to improve their process control. Both, the better and porrer performing contractors show up with similar rankings from year to year. The QLA specifications essentially are serving satisfactorily. Implementation: The PF formulas were modified for the 1997 season so as to make the pF continuous in relation to the QL, rather than in steps as has been the procedure. It is suggested the methods of applying weight factors to the element QL's for PF calculations be reviewed for possible changes. Some other changes in the specification and computer software are needed.
Book Synopsis Using Ground Tire Rubber in Hot Mix Asphalt Pavements by : Donna S. Harmelink
Download or read book Using Ground Tire Rubber in Hot Mix Asphalt Pavements written by Donna S. Harmelink and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Documents the construction and performance of the research study which was initiated to address section 1038(d) of the 1991 Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA). The project selected to demonstrate the crumb rubber process was located on Platt Canyon (SH 75) from Bowles to C470 in the Denver metropolitan area. The project was a low volume roadway and quantities of crumb rubber introduced into the mix were minimal. This was to reduce risk in terms of premature failure and Colorado's limited experience with crumb rubber. Because of this limited experience, the "dry" process was selected. The project contained four different mix designs. A mix containing 1% [20 lb/ton (10 kg/Mg)] crumb rubber, a mix containing 1 lb/ton (0.5 kg/Mg), a mix containing 3 lb/ton (1.5 kg/Mg) and a mix which contained no rubber were placed on the project.

Download or read book HBP Pilot Void Acceptance Projects Completed in 1993-1996 written by Bud A. Brakey and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1993, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) recognized that specifying HBP volumetric properties would likely provide superior pavements. A long range goal was set for acceptance to be based on voids properties. Beginning in 1993, a series of void acceptance (VA) pilot projects were let to contract; by the end of 1996, nine had been completed. Six had conventional mix designs. The last three were designed using Superpave technology. The data for the nine VA projects are summarized and compared with data from concurrent CDOT projects under Quality Level Analysis (QLA).
Book Synopsis I-76 Truck Study by : David A. Price
Download or read book I-76 Truck Study written by David A. Price and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portions of the driving lane on I-76 located in the Colorado Department of Transportation's (CDOT's) Region 4 are seriously distressed. To help prolong the life of the Portland Cement Concrete Pavement Region 4 has placed signs advising truckers to use the passing lane between Roggen and the Nebraska state line [approximately 140 miles (225 km)]. A test section well within the signed test area advising the truckers to use the passing lane and a control section just prior to the signed area were established and evaluated over a four year period. Roughness data taken with an Ames Profilograph, slab faulting measured with a Georgia fault meter, and overall physical pavement distress were noted and used as a comparison between driving lane and passing lane within the two sections.

Book Synopsis Avalanche Hazard Index for Colorado Highways by : Arthur I. Mears
Download or read book Avalanche Hazard Index for Colorado Highways written by Arthur I. Mears and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study conducted an inventory of existing avalanche paths along Colorado Highways. Information was collected on the size and type of each avalanche path, the historical frequency of avalanche occurrences, the number of avalanche tracks, the length of highway exposed, the volume of traffic on the road, the traffic peak characteristics, the speed of traffic and the consequences of an avalanche encounter with a vehicle. This information was used to generate an Avalanche Hazard Index (AHI) for Colorado Highways. The concept of the AHI has been used in the past as a quantitative measure of the avalanche hazard to traffic. The AHI values calculated in this study are considered relative values and can be used to compare the hazards of particular avalanche paths or avalanche prone routes in Colorado.
Book Synopsis Cracking in Bridge Decks by : Pui-shum B. Shing
Download or read book Cracking in Bridge Decks written by Pui-shum B. Shing and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the findings of a study whose primary objectives are to determine the cause of extensive transverse cracking that has been observed in some existing bridge decks, and to identify the change of material specifications and construction practice that is necessary to reduce the severity of deck cracking. To achieve these goals, recent studies on the cause of bridge deck cracking were reviewed, an experimental study was conducted to compare the shrinkage properties of different concrete mixes, and the current material and design specifications and construction practice adopted by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) were reviewed to identify areas that need improvement. A survey was conducted on seven newly constructed bridges to examine the extent of cracking in concrete decks that were constructed with the different mix designs and curing procedure that were currently used by CDOT.
Book Synopsis Performance Evaluation of Various Corrosion Protection Systems of Bridges in Colorado by : Yunping Xi
Download or read book Performance Evaluation of Various Corrosion Protection Systems of Bridges in Colorado written by Yunping Xi and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corrosion of reinforced concrete structures has been a significant problem for many state and transportation agencies since the application of deicing salts was introduced. Much research has been conducted to develop corrosion protection systems that can prolong the life span of reinforced concrete structures. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) has several routine and experimental measures to prevent corrosion of the rebar including epoxy-coated rebar, calcium nitrite admixture, organic corrosion inhibitors, a thick cover of quality concrete, and a waterproofing membrane covered by an asphalt overlay. An extensive literature review was performed to collect information on various corrosion protection systems that have been used in the U.S. and around the world. Current CDOT practices in terms of corrosion protection measures were reviewed. A draft inspection plan for Colorado's bridge structures was proposed.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the research conducted was to determine if aggregate degradation takes place and to measure the possible degree of degradation after bituminous mixtures are heated inside the NCAT Asphalt Content Tester. A study was conducted which compared the original aggregate blend (control specimens) to the residual aggregate blend (experimental specimens) obtained after several bituminous mixtures were heated inside the NCAT Asphalt Content Tester. The control specimens and the experimental specimens used to produce the bituminous mixtures were the result of an aggregate sample which was split three times. Two methods of analysis were used to review the gradation results.

Book Synopsis Long-range Cost Estimation Research Project by :
Download or read book Long-range Cost Estimation Research Project written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to research long-range (parametric) cost estimation at the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), utilizing AASHTO's Trns.port Cost Estimation and Decision Support software. Info Tech, Inc., analysis reviewed CDOT's current long-range estimation practices and identified revisions which would be needed to satisfactorily meet CDOT's future cost estimating requirements, i.e., in order to develop consistent and reliable cost estimates when little is known about a project. Both item and contract classifications utilized by CDOT in BAMS/DSS were revised to reflect more logical functional groupings. The new contract work type and item classification were used directly to develop an Interim Solution for Long-Range Cost Estimation that uses historical bid-based default prices. Info Tech analysts also researched Internet sources to identify the availability of major item cost data at the regional and national level, including data for multimodal project types.
