Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Distributional List of the Mammals of California The system of entry adopted in the following list is simple. Of the higher groups only Orders and Families are given. The scientific name here adopted for the species is given in bold face, followed by the authority. A vernacular name has been selected - in many cases with difficulty, as is admitted. In nearly every case the original description has been verified from its original source. In the few instances where the cita tion is given within quotation marks, the citation is at second hand, that is, the original has not been seen by the writer. The type locality is usually just as given in connection with the original description; sometimes it is modified somewhat to make it more intelligible, for example, by giving the name of the county or of the nearest large town; and occasionally cor rections have been necessary. The synonyms are any other names - aside from those appearing in the heading and in the citation following orig inal description - that have been applied to the species as occurring within the state of California. Where a name now considered synonymous with the accepted one, was based upon a specimen from California, the full citation and type locality are given. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Distributional List of the Birds of California Of course, in each of the previous lists there have been some erroneous entries; but the omission of these names in the succeeding list has always been more than compensated for by additions during the intervening period. This process may be expected to continue almost ad infinitum, as long as faunal lists are published. As in the fifteen years or so just past, the increments will come chiefly through the detection of stragglers, and, judging from the nature of those already recorded, individuals representing practically every species and sub species in North America and the adjacent waters may be expected to reach California sooner or later. This would probably hold true as well for any other area in temperate America. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from California Mammals The area treated of in this volume is strictly California and that part of the Pacific Ocean properly belonging to California. All the mammals described are known to have been found with in the State or within sight of its shores. The number of species and subspecies proves to be very large. This is accounted for partly by the large extent and great latitudinal length of the State, but more by the very great variety of climate within the State, greater than occurs in any other State of the Union; grading all the way from the subtropical region of the Colorado Valley and Desert to the arctic climate of the eternal snows on the summits of the Sierra Nevada. No general work covering the mammals of this State has been published since 1857, when Baird's Vol. VIII of the Pacific Railroad' Reports was issued. This did not contain the marine mammals, the bats nor man. A great advance in our knowledge of the land mammals has occurred within the last fifteen years, and some of the material obtained in this time has not yet been critically examined by systematic experts, hence we may expect further additions to the present known species, as well as more or less revision of the nomenclature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pacific Coast Avifauna, Vol. 2: A Distributional List of the Birds of California It is important that the limitations of the following treatment of species be clearly understood; too much must not be expected of it, and at the same time its full scope of usefulness should be realized. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Account of the Mammals and Birds of the Lower Colorado Valley: With Especial Reference to the Distributional Problems Presented The obvious principle has been followed. That no generalized treat ment of a concrete subject like geographic distribution is justifiable upon any but the soundest basis of systematic analysis. Because of the close dependence of most mammals and birds upon plants the latter have an important place in any treatment of animal distribution. The set of plants secured by the Colorado River Expedi tion has been named by Professor H. M. Hall, of the University of California. Names so provided are used throughout the present paper, particularly in the discussion of associational areas. My sincere acknowledgements are hereby extended. To Professor Charles H. Gilbert, Department of Zoology, Leland Stanford Junior University, and to Professor Charles A: Kofoid, Department of Zoology, University of California, for critical suggestions concern ing general considerations; to Professor H. M. Hall, of the University of California, for critical reading of the chapter on associations; and to Messrs. Harry S. Swarth and Walter P. Taylor, fellow staff members in the California Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, for help from time to time on many points of detail. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Account of the Birds and Mammals of the San Jacinto Area of Southern California: With Remarks Upon the Behavior of Geographic Races on the Margins of Their Habitats The first field work formally undertaken by the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, after its inauguration in March, 1908. Was centered in the San Jacinto Mountains of southern California. The contiguous regions on both the desert and Pacific sides were included in the explorations. This program was settled upon in part because this particular area remained at that time the least known part of southern California as regards its vertebrate fauna, and in part because there were likely to be presented here in accentuated degree peculiar distributional features dependent upon the great altitude of the mountain itself and the close juxta position on either hand of the sharply contrasted faunas of the desert and coast regions. Furthermore, there were already available the collections and information resulting from the senior author's work in the San Bernardino Mountains, since published (grinnell, This afforded a basis for a systematic plan of action looking towards verification of certain previously entertained hypotheses. During the five years' interim, from the date of concluding the San Jacinto field work until the final compilation of the present report, much pertinent data has been secured from studies of related areas. These additional sources of information have enabled 1is to interpret the distributional problems con cerned with the San Jacinto area as we could not have done otherwise. All of this contributory faunistic work, as well as the main undertaking, has been made possible through the con tinned financial support provided by Miss Annie M. Alexander, who has thus shown in an effective way her belief in the ultimate value of efforts expended in this line of scientific inquiry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forty-nine species of mammals regularly occur in California chaparral, but none lives only in chaparral. Among the 49 species, 7 are found primarily in mature chaparral, 9 in young chaparral or along ecotones between chaparral and other plant communities, and 19 in riparian areas. Five species occur in many habitats but prefer chaparral in California, and 9 have wide ranges that encompass many communities including chaparral. By altering the structure of the plant community, fire in chaparral is important in determining the distribution and abundance of mammalian populations. Fire is not permanently destructive to the mammalian fauna. Wildlife habitat can be optimized by maintaining chaparral in many age classes, by restricting fuel reduction treatments to 1 to 100 ha, by protecting all trees, and by enhancing water sources. A given area of chaparral and contains two to four common, and two to nine total, species of rodents. Seeds, fruits, and young vegetative growth are the most important plant foods in chaparral. Only 12 species of mammals are endemic to chaparral because of the limited opportunity in both time and space for speciation to occur. Only kangarro rats (Dipodomys) and chipmunks (Eutamias) have speciated in chaparral.
