Book Synopsis A Discipline on Foot by : Alan Christy
Download or read book A Discipline on Foot written by Alan Christy and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2012-08-17 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the fundamental question of how a new discipline comes into being, this groundbreaking book tells the story of the emergence of native ethnology in Imperial Japan, a “one nation” social science devoted to the study of the Japanese people. Roughly corresponding to folklore studies or ethnography in the West, this social science was developed outside the academy over the first half of the twentieth century by a diverse group of intellectuals, local dignitaries, and hobbyists. Alan Christy traces the paths of the distinctive individuals who founded minzokugaku, how theory and practice developed, and how many previously unknown figures contributed to the growth of the discipline. Despite its humble beginnings, native ethnology today is a fixture in Japanese intellectual life, offering arguments and evidence about the popular, as opposed to elite, foundations of Japanese culture. Speaking directly to fundamental questions in anthropology, this authoritative and engaging book will become a standard not only for the field of native ethnology but also as a major work in broader modern Japanese cultural and intellectual history.

Book Synopsis When Communication Became a Discipline by : William F. Eadie
Download or read book When Communication Became a Discipline written by William F. Eadie and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-11-05 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Communication Became a Discipline argues that speech and journalism professors embraced the concept of communication between 1964 and 1982. They changed the names of their scholarly societies and journals and revised their academic curricula. Five “strands” of scholarship became and remain central to this transformation. Communication is not a traditional academic discipline, but its scholars convinced their colleagues to understand and embrace it. When Communication Became a Discipline presents an argument with historical evidence that illustrates scholarly creativity at its finest.
Download or read book God Walk written by Mark Buchanan and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2020-07-14 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on Jesus's example of walking, bestselling author Mark Buchanan explores one of the oldest spiritual practices of our faith. What happens when we literally walk out our Christian life? We discover the joy of traveling at the speed of our soul. We often act as if faith is only about the mind. But what about our bodies? What does our physical being have to do with our spiritual life? When the Bible exhorts us to walk in the light, or walk by faith, or walk in truth, it means these things literally as much as figuratively. The Christian faith always involves walking out, as again and again we find the holy in the ordinary. "Come, follow me," Jesus said, and then he was off. The most obvious thing about Jesus's method of discipleship, in fact, is that he walked and invited others to walk with him. Jesus is always "on the way," "arriving," "leaving," "approaching," "coming upon." It's in the walking that his disciples are taught, formed, tested, empowered, and released. Part theology, part history, part field guide, God Walk explores walking as spiritual formation, walking as healing, walking as exercise, walking as prayer, walking as pilgrimage, suffering, friendship, and attentiveness. It is a book about being alongside the God who, incarnate in Jesus, turns to us as he passes by--always on foot--and says simply, "Come, follow me." With practical insight and biblical reflections told in his distinct voice, Buchanan provides specific walking exercises so you can immediately implement the practice of going "God speed." Whether you are walking around the neighborhood or hiking in the mountains, walking offers the potential to awaken your life with Christ as it revives body and soul.
Book Synopsis Sit Down and Shut Up by : Cinque Henderson
Download or read book Sit Down and Shut Up written by Cinque Henderson and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On his very first day of school as a substitute teacher, Cinque Henderson was cursed at and openly threatened by one of his students. Not wanting trouble or any broken bones, Henderson called the hall monitor, who escorted the student to the office. But five minutes later the office sent him back with a note that read, “Ok to return to class.” That was it: no suspension, no detention, no phone call home, nothing. Sit Down and Shut Up: How Discipline Can Set Students Free is a passionate and personal analysis of Henderson's year as substitute teacher in some of America’s toughest schools. Students disrespected, yelled at, and threatened teachers, abetted by a school system and political culture that turned a willfully blind eye to the economic and social decline that created the problem. Henderson concludes that the failures of our worst schools are the result of a population in crisis: classrooms are microcosms of all our nation’s most vexing issues of race and class. The legacy and stain of race—the price of generational trauma, the cost of fatherlessness, the failures of capitalism, the false promise of meritocracy—played itself out in every single interaction Henderson had with an aggressive student, an unengaged parent, or a failed administrator. In response to the chaos he found in the classroom, Henderson proposes a recommitment to the notion that discipline—wisely and properly understood, patiently and justly administered—is the only proper route to freedom and opportunity for generations of poor youth. With applications far beyond the classroom, Henderson’s experiences offer novel insights into the pressing racial, social, and economic issues that have shaped America’s cultural landscape. Sure to ignite discussion and controversy, Sit Down and Shut Up provides a frank evaluation of the broken classrooms of America and offers a bold strategy for fixing them.

Book Synopsis Police Violence by : William A. Geller
Download or read book Police Violence written by William A. Geller and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1959-12-11 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the prevalence of police-citizen conflict has diminished in recent decades, police use of excessive force remains a concern of police departments nationwide. This timely book focuses on what is known and what still needs to be learned to understand, prevent, and remediate police abuse of force. The topics covered include: a theory of police abuse of force; the causes of police brutality; measures of its prevalence; the violence-prone police officer; public opinion about police abuse of force; the issue of race; officer selection, training, and attitudes; police unions and police culture; administrative review; procedural justice and the review of citizen complaints; the role of lawsuits; and a survey of police brutality abroad. In the final chapter Geller and Toch suggest new directions for research and practical innovations in law enforcement, from which both police and citizens can benefit. The contributors to this volume are scholars of criminology, criminal justice, social psychology, law, and public administration; former police managers; a police union leader; civilian oversight agency administrators and analysts; civil liberties advocates; police litigation expert witnesses; and media commentators. The combination of theoretical and practical perspectives makes this book ideal for students and scholars of democratic policing and for those in police departments, government, and the media charged with addressing and understanding the problem of improper exercise of force.

Book Synopsis The Dance on the Feet of Chance by : Hooman Attar
Download or read book The Dance on the Feet of Chance written by Hooman Attar and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-12-02 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporations have problems dealing with the indeterminate aspects of innovation, particularly in the early ‘fuzzy front-end’ of the process. They have difficulty in reflecting upon and handling uncertainties of innovation; often exhibiting a ‘dynamic conservatism’ or a set of ‘defensive routines’ that inhibit inquiry about such contentious issues. They prefer, and are better equipped to operate within the ‘language of investment’ than the ‘language of invention’. In the language of investment, corporations select an environmental niche, and attempt to program and fabricate its future according to rational, stable assumptions and formulations. This view is closely bound to a utopian image of risk management as a tool able to objectively map, measure, and monitor future uncertainties that govern the behavior of the chosen niche. By seeking a close and clear fit between risk management solutions (means) and the dominant factors that determine future threats and opportunities to the niche environment (ends), corporations attempt to master risks and colonize the future through an orderly process. It is the argument of this book that this approach is only good when targeting and ‘solving’ well-defined problems of risk management and innovation within an intellectual terrain that has already been intellectually ‘set’. It fails to systematically recognize, reflect upon, and improve the effectiveness of the complex and creative task undertaken in the prior stage of ‘problem setting’ or ‘risk settling’. In contrast to this approach, it is argued that in ill-defined, unique, and uncertain situations, ‘problem setting’ or ‘risk settlement’ are the key primary activities, and ‘problem solving’ or ‘risk management’ only secondary. This study, as its strategic objective, seeks to juxtapose these contrasting views and develop an integrated conceptual framework capable of supporting a reflective practice amongst practitioners grappling with the interplay between ‘risk settlement’ and ‘risk management’ at the ‘fuzzy front-end’ of innovation. This framework, strongly influenced by Donald Schön’s scholarly work, takes the form of a set of concepts designed to synthesize, mobilize, and focus a wide range of academic literature on managing risk and handling uncertainty in product innovation. It informs reflections on professional practice through pragmatist/existential explorations of the role of metaphor in basic thinking processes as well as sociopolitical and psychological insights into the factors influencing how practitioners intuitively transform and translate uncertain, unmanageable realities into packages of manageable problems, converting uncertainty into manageable risks and rewards. In seeking to understand, reflect upon and improve the way in which such a conversion process within the practice of risk settlement works, it is argued that it is useful to view it has having four dimensions: ‘undertaking spontaneous and reciprocal reflections’, ‘coping with anxiety’, ‘use of metaphors’, and ‘use of frames and framing’. The study applies this framework and understanding to an empirical study of risk management and product innovation in the Australian Cooperative Research Centres (CRC) programme. A narrative reconstruction of critical events occurring in a series of R&D projects in the CRCs is used to elucidate, elaborate, and illustrate the conceptual framework that has been developed as both a contribution to risk management thought and, at least in prototype, as a guide for reflective practice. The framework, and its illustration, is designed to support practical reflection on the complexities of ‘problem setting’, ’risk settlement’ and the ‘non-rational’ character of ‘generative metaphors’ and the practice of ‘invention’. In the introduction, I point to the increasing rate of uncertain, unique, and complex problems as they affect professionals, organizations involved in innovation, and modern institutions as a whole. This situati
