Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Charities of San Francisco: A Directory of the Benevolent and Correctional Agencies, Together With a Digest of Those Laws Most Directly Affecting Their Work This seems like an enormous charity bill for a city so young as San Francisco, and whose entire population numbers scarcely The city of Baltimore, with more in habitants, expended in 1892 about less.i While not much value is to be placed upon this comparison, since the figures for Baltimore are an estimate based upon a partial can vass, and it is not likely that the cost of caring for dependents in institutions outside of the city are included. And while some allowance is to be made for the greater demands upon all charitable institutions in the latter part of 1893, still, the cost of relieving the poor in San Francisco is undoubtedly more in proportion than in any other young and prosperous city.
