Book Synopsis Theory of Differential Equations with Unbounded Delay by : V. Lakshmikantham
Download or read book Theory of Differential Equations with Unbounded Delay written by V. Lakshmikantham and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because the theory of equations with delay terms occurs in a variety of contexts, it is important to provide a framework, whenever possible, to handle as many cases as possible simultaneously so as to bring out a better insight and understanding of the subtle differences of the various equations with delays. Furthermore, such a unified theory would avoid duplication and expose open questions that are significant for future research. It is in this spirit that the authors view the importance of their monograph, which presents a systematic and unified theory of recent developments of equations with unbounded delay, describes the current state of the theory showing the essential unity achieved, and provides a general structure applicable to a variety of problems. It is the first book that: (i) presents a unified framework to investigate the basic existence theory for a variety of equations with delay; (ii) treats the classification of equations with memory precisely so as to bring out the subtle differences between them; (iii) develops a systematic study of stability theory in terms of two different measures which includes several known concepts; and (iv) exhibits the advantages of employing Lyapunov functions on product spaces as well as the method of perturbing Lyapunov functions. This book will be of value to researchers and advanced graduate students in mathematics, electrical engineering and biomathematics.
Book Synopsis Delay and Functional Differential Equations and Their Applications by : Klaus Schmitt
Download or read book Delay and Functional Differential Equations and Their Applications written by Klaus Schmitt and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delay and Functional Differential Equations and Their Applications provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of functional differential equations and its applications. This book covers a variety of topics, including qualitative and geometric theory, control theory, Volterra equations, numerical methods, the theory of epidemics, problems in physiology, and other areas of applications. Organized into two parts encompassing 25 chapters, this book begins with an overview of problems involving functional differential equations with terminal conditions in function spaces. This text then examines the numerical methods for functional differential equations. Other chapters consider the theory of radiative transfer, which give rise to several interesting functional partial differential equations. This book discusses as well the theory of embedding fields, which studies systems of nonlinear functional differential equations that can be derived from psychological postulates and interpreted as neural networks. The final chapter deals with the usefulness of the flip-flop circuit. This book is a valuable resource for mathematicians.

Book Synopsis Time Lags in Biological Models by : N. MacDonald
Download or read book Time Lags in Biological Models written by N. MacDonald and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many biological models it is necessary to allow the rates of change of the variables to depend on the past history, rather than only the current values, of the variables. The models may require discrete lags, with the use of delay-differential equations, or distributed lags, with the use of integro-differential equations. In these lecture notes I discuss the reasons for including lags, especially distributed lags, in biological models. These reasons may be inherent in the system studied, or may be the result of simplifying assumptions made in the model used. I examine some of the techniques available for studying the solution of the equations. A large proportion of the material presented relates to a special method that can be applied to a particular class of distributed lags. This method uses an extended set of ordinary differential equations. I examine the local stability of equilibrium points, and the existence and frequency of periodic solutions. I discuss the qualitative effects of lags, and how these differ according to the choice of discrete or distributed lag. The models studied are drawn from the population dynamiCS of single species (logistic growth, the chemostat) and of interacting pairs of species (predation, mutualism), from cell population dynamiCS (haemopoiesis) and from biochemical kinetics (the Goodwin oscillator). The last chapter is devoted to a population model employing difference equations. All these models include non-linear terms.
Book Synopsis Time Delay Systems: Methods, Applications and New Trends by : Rifat Sipahi
Download or read book Time Delay Systems: Methods, Applications and New Trends written by Rifat Sipahi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-24 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is concerned with the control and dynamics of time delay systems; a research field with at least six-decade long history that has been very active especially in the past two decades. In parallel to the new challenges emerging from engineering, physics, mathematics, and economics, the volume covers several new directions including topology induced stability, large-scale interconnected systems, roles of networks in stability, and new trends in predictor-based control and consensus dynamics. The associated applications/problems are described by highly complex models, and require solving inverse problems as well as the development of new theories, mathematical tools, numerically-tractable algorithms for real-time control. The volume, which is targeted to present these developments in this rapidly evolving field, captures a careful selection of the most recent papers contributed by experts and collected under five parts: (i) Methodology: From Retarded to Neutral Continuous Delay Models, (ii) Systems, Signals and Applications, (iii): Numerical Methods, (iv) Predictor-based Control and Compensation, and (v) Networked Control Systems and Multi-agent Systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book mostly results from a selection of papers presented during the 11th IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Workshop on Time-Delay Systems, which took place in Grenoble, France, February 4 - 6, 2013. During this event, 37 papers were presented. Taking into account the reviewers' evaluation and the papers' presentation the best papers have been selected and collected into the present volume. The authors of 13 selected papers were invited to participate to this book and provided a more detailed and improved version of the conference paper. To enrich the book, three more chapters have been included from specialists on time-delay systems who presented their work during the 52nd IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, which held in December 10 - 13, 2013, at Florence, Italy. The content of the book is divided into four main parts as follows: Modeling, Stability analysis, Stabilization and control, and Input-delay systems. Focusing on various topics of time-delay systems, this book will be interesting for researchers and graduate students working on control and system theory.

Book Synopsis Mathematical Models in Population Biology and Epidemiology by : Fred Brauer
Download or read book Mathematical Models in Population Biology and Epidemiology written by Fred Brauer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-11-09 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to search for a balance between simple and analyzable models and unsolvable models which are capable of addressing important questions on population biology. Part I focusses on single species simple models including those which have been used to predict the growth of human and animal population in the past. Single population models are, in some sense, the building blocks of more realistic models -- the subject of Part II. Their role is fundamental to the study of ecological and demographic processes including the role of population structure and spatial heterogeneity -- the subject of Part III. This book, which will include both examples and exercises, is of use to practitioners, graduate students, and scientists working in the field.
