Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elihu Beard's Diary of 1849 represents a very personal view of America during its greatest period of transition and conflict. This remarkable young student of a Quaker family shares his thoughtful views on issues of his day, many of which still have pertinence today. “…after a long and solitary walk, I found myself in a lonely and secluded spot. Yes, solitude is dear to me. I love it! There is a gloom upon my mind. I feel a heaviness of soul which fearfully speaks the boding of some fell disease within. Well Let it come; I dread it not there is but one thing in the world for which I would wish to live, and that is, that I may add something that will benefit the condition of my fellow beings or be of use to future generations.” EBB

Book Synopsis The World Rushed In by : J. S. Holliday
Download or read book The World Rushed In written by J. S. Holliday and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2015-03-16 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When The World Rushed In was first published in 1981, the Washington Post predicted, “It seems unlikely that anyone will write a more comprehensive book about the Gold Rush.” Twenty years later, no one has emerged to contradict that judgment, and the book has gained recognition as a classic. As the San Francisco Examiner noted, “It is not often that a work of history can be said to supplant every book on the same subject that has gone before it.” Through the diary and letters of William Swain--augmented by interpolations from more than five hundred other gold seekers and by letters sent to Swain from his wife and brother back home--the complete cycle of the gold rush is recreated: the overland migration of over thirty thousand men, the struggle to “strike it rich” in the mining camps of the Sierra Nevadas, and the return home through the jungles of the Isthmus of Panama. In a new preface, the author reappraises our continuing fascination with the “gold rush experience” as a defining epoch in western--indeed, American--history.
Book Synopsis The Diary of a Forty-niner by : Chauncey L. Canfield
Download or read book The Diary of a Forty-niner written by Chauncey L. Canfield and published by . This book was released on 1906 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chauncey de Leon Canfield (1843-1909) first published "The diary of a forty-niner" in 1906, and 1,200 of the 2,000 copies in that edition were burned. Joseph Gaer's Bibliography of California literature describes this book as written in the form of a diary, but fictional. The diary of a forty-niner (1920) reprints Canfield's 1906 publication. It purports to be the diary of Alfred T. Jackson, of Litchfield County, Connecticut, during his days as a gold prospector, 1850-1852. Jackson offers first-hand accounts of Nevada City and neighboring Rock Creek; descriptions of Grass Valley, North and South Yuba Valleys, and the Sierra Mountains; details of gold mining with accounts of pioneer overland crossings, and foreign mineworkers (including Chinese). Entries concerning Jackson's personal life include details of his courtship of a French woman in the camps.

Download or read book A Year of Mud and Gold written by William Benemann and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2003-10-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Year of Mud and Gold is a collection of over two hundred excerpts from letters and diaries of ordinary men and women caught up in the rapid transformation of San Francisco during its gold rush heyday, 1849?50. Together these accounts render a rich mosaic of San Francisco?s metamorphosis from a small Mexican outpost into a rough-and-tumble boomtown filled with gamblers and prostitutes, evangelists and entrepreneurs?men, women, and children from all parts of the world, arriving in California with the dream of striking it rich. ø The correspondents come from a variety of economic and social backgrounds. Some are barely literate, while others write as well as the finest authors of nineteenth-century travel literature. Their writings address a broad range of concerns, from business prospects and consumer prices to social mores and popular amusements. The letters and diaries also hold clues to processes central to frontier history: the Americanization of Hispanic California, the stresses that migration placed on individuals and families, the fluidity of boomtown economies, and the nature of gender and race relations in an urban population of immigrants.
