Book Synopsis Use of Nursing Models and Theories from a Sexuality Perspective by : Martha Ofelia Valle Solis

This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book presents research studies where models and theories of nursing from the perspective of sexuality were used. Theory is essential to explain and understand nursing practices. Likewise, it favours planning, predicting and evaluating the outcomes of care. Therefore, the theoretical approach is a useful tool for reasoning, critical thinking and, in addition, it helps nurses to be able to use and manage all the information about the patient and to manage the practice of care in an orderly and effective way. The use of conceptual models of nursing in care ensures that all nurses share a common language and similar conceptions regarding the nursing, person, health, environment and care paradigms that characterize the professional role. Here, a reflection is posed about what still, and even though it is a very important topic, maintains the dichotomy between nursing practice and nursing theory. The book is aimed at undergraduate and graduate students in the area of health, as well as at health professionals interested in using such models or theories related to human sexuality in different age groups"--

Book Synopsis Sexual Health Knowledge, Attitudes, and Beliefs Among Nurse Practitioners and Certified Nurse Midwives Who Work with Adolescents in Non-acute Care Settings by : Julia Irene Minoia

This book was released on 2017 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adolescents frequently experience perceived and actual barriers to sexual and reproductive healthcare related to confidentiality, access, and their relationship with healthcare providers. Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) are well positioned to work with adolescents in a variety of non-acute care settings to provide preventative sexual healthcare services. No studies have recorded Nurse Practitioners' (NPs) and Certified Nurse Midwives'/Certified Midwives' (CNMs/CMs) adolescent sexual health knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there were any differences between Women's Health Nurse Practitioners (WHNPs) and CNMs/CMs whose educational programs have a concentration in sexuality, and APRNs from other specialties (ANPs, FNPs, PNPs, and PMHNPs) regarding knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs toward adolescents' sexual health. The study used a cross-sectional, descriptive comparative design. A convenience sample was recruited through the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health (NPWH) and the Nurse Practitioner Association- New York State (NPA) e-newsletters and surveyed online with The Sex Knowledge Attitude Test (SKAT), the Sexuality Attitudes and Beliefs Survey (SABS), and the National Violence Against Women Survey (NVAWS) to assess sexual health knowledge, sexuality attitudes, beliefs about addressing adolescent's sexual health, and personal experience of sexual violence. One open ended question elicited responses of qualitative data. Demographic data of participants (n = 204) were analysed and 171 participants finished the online survey. Multiple logistic regression analysis shows that the WHNP/CNM/CM group have significantly more positive beliefs about addressing adolescents' sexual health than the Other NPs group, [beta] = -3.36, p = .003. Chi-square of attitude scores by region of the U.S. show that positive attitudes toward adolescent sexuality vary significantly with the South showing the least positive attitude scores (p
Book Synopsis Heteronormativity in a Nursing Context by : Gerd Röndahl

Book excerpt: The general aim of the project was to describe the situation of lesbians and gay men in a nursing environment by studying the attitudes of nursing staff and students, and the experiences of gay nursing staff in their work environment and of gay patients and partners in their encounters with nursing. The study for papers I and II had a descriptive, comparative design. Nurses, assistant nurses, and nursing students completed the Attitudes Toward Homosexuality Scale (ATHS), the Causes of Homosexuality Questionnaire (CHQ), and the Affect Adjective Checklist (AAC), along with the Nursing Behaviour Questionnaire (NBQ). In general, the participating nursing staff and students expressed positive attitudes, though some subjects reported very negative attitudes toward gay people. The participants also expressed a full spectrum of emotions from delight to anger. The studies for papers III and IV had a descriptive, explorative design. Here, the data collection was performed by semi-structured interviews. The informants were gay nursing staff, gay patients and partners of patients. The gay personnel reported fear and concern about heterosexuals' reactions when these informants "come out," and were constantly assesing the risk being open about their sexual orientation among their workmates. Nearly all patients and partners described several situations where heteronormative assumptions were communicated by the nursing staff. Almost all informants offered recommendations for nursing staff to facilitate communication. According to the presented findings, probably only a small minority in Swedish nursing have negative attitudes toward lesbians and gay men. However, the informants told of heteronormative language and behaviour in nursing contexts that were percieved as insensitive, insulting and humaliating. Nursing staff need to learn how to communicate in a more natural way and to be aware of the norms they communicate through the language and behaviour they use.
