Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bislama is the national language of Vanuatu, the world's most linguistically diverse nation with at least 80 actively spoken Oceanic languages used by about 200,000 people. Bislama began as a plantation pidgin based on English in the nineteenth century, but it has since developed into a unique language with a grammar and vocabulary very different from English. It is one of very few national languages for which there is no readily available reference grammar. This book aims to fill this gap by providing an extensive account of the grammar of Bislama as it is used by ordinary Ni-Vanuatu. It does not, therefore, aim to describe any kind of artificial written norm but sets out to capture a range of different kinds of ways that Ni-Vanuatu will say things in various contexts, both written and spoken, formal and informal. The thrust of this volume is to show that Bislama has a grammar—an unfamiliar concept for those educated in Vanuatu. It also shows that Bislama is a language of considerable complexity, which will come as a surprise to many of its users, who have been taught to view their language as somehow "simple" and even "deficient."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book is based on presentations made during the IXth International School on Lexicography, “Multi-disciplinary Lexicography: Traditions and Challenges of the XXIst Century”, at Ivanovo State University, September 8–10, 2011, and continues a series of collective monographs devoted to the theoretical and practical problems of lexicography, published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing in 2007, 2009 and 2010. The scope of topics discussed in four parts (Dictionary as a Cross-road of Language and Culture, Dictionary Use and Dictionary Criticism, Terminology and LSP Studies, and Projects of New Dictionaries) is rather wide and focuses on burning problems of European, Russian and world lexicography, as well as on projects of new dictionaries. This book will be of interest to theoreticians, practitioners, and students of linguistic faculties.

Book excerpt: Problems of how to describe and explain the forms and functions of English outside Britain and the United States (and of varieties within the two countries) have become central for English linguistics over the past twenty years. The present collection combines 8 of Gorlach's major articles in the field written between 1984 and 1988. They range from methodological and state-of-the-art accounts to treatments of “colonial lag”, from lexicographical problems, and translations into pidgins and creoles to papers focussing on individual regions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even More Englishes comprises Manfred Görlach's more recent papers devoted to general problems of the world language and to individual varieties. The collection starts with principal questions as to what can rightly be regarded as 'English', looks at specific features of emigrant Englishes and the value of individual features as evidence for linguistic geography — and for linguistic jokes. The functional range of Scots is traced through its history, and the question is raised whether we are justified to speak of 'Celtic Englishes' in Britain and Ireland. Two papers investigate the forms and functions of the world language in two African states, South Africa and Nigeria. A survey of new dictionaries of varieties of English and a discussion of whether pidgin and creole languages need different types of dictionaries are followed by a documentation of the history of the author's projects in the field of English as a world language. Even More Englishes complements Englishes and More Englishes previously published in the Varieties of English Around the World book series.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a comparative, socio-historical study of the Germanic standard languages (Afrikaans, Danish, Dutch, English, Faroese, Frisian, German, Icelandic, Low German, Luxemburgish, Norwegian, Scots, Swedish, Yiddish as well as the Caribbean and Pacific Creole languages). Each of the 16 orginal chapters systematically discusses central aspects of the standardization process, including dialect selection, codification, elaboration and diffusion of the standard norm across the speech community, as well as incipient processes of de-standardization and re-standardization. The strongly comparative orientation of the contributions allow for the identification of broad similarities as well as intriguing differences across a wide range of historically and socially diverse language histories. Two chapters by the editors provide an overview of the theoretical background and rationale of comparative standardization research, and outline directions for further research in the area. The volume will be of interest to language historians as well as sociolinguists in general.
