Book Synopsis Manors and Maps in Rural England, from the Tenth Century to the Seventeenth by : P.D.A. Harvey
Download or read book Manors and Maps in Rural England, from the Tenth Century to the Seventeenth written by P.D.A. Harvey and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: P.D.A. Harvey is a historian of medieval rural England with a wide interest in the history of cartography; this collection of his essays brings together both these strands. It first looks at the English countryside from the 10th century to the 15th, investigating problems in particular documents, in the village community and in underlying long-term changes. How landlords drew profits from their property in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, how and why there followed changes in the way landed estates were run and in the written records they produced, what new light their personal seals can throw on medieval peasants, are all among the topics discussed, while the local management of large estates and the development of the peasant land market are themes that recur throughout. There follow essays on the way maps were brought into the management of landed estates in the 16th and 17th centuries, starting with the introduction of consistent scale into mapping, a new concept crucially important in the general history of topographical maps. The collection closes by looking at some of the traps that both documents and maps set for the historian of the English countryside.

Book Synopsis Late Anglo-Saxon Prayer in Practice by : Kate H. Thomas
Download or read book Late Anglo-Saxon Prayer in Practice written by Kate H. Thomas and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-01-20 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph examines Anglo-Saxon prayer outside of the communal liturgy. With a particular emphasis on its practical aspects, it considers how small groups of prayers were elaborated into complex programs for personal devotion, resulting in the forerunners of the Special Offices. With examples being taken chiefly from major eleventh-century collections of prayers, liturgy and medical remedies, the methodologies of Anglo-Saxon compilers are examined, followed by five chapters on specialist kinds of prayer: to the Trinity and saints, for liturgical feasts and the canonical hours, to the Holy Cross, for protection and healing, and confessions. Analyzing prayer in a wide range of different situations, this book argues that Anglo-Saxon manuscripts may have included far more private offices than have so far been recognized, if we see them for what they were.

Download or read book Anglo-Norman Political Culture and the Twelfth-century Renaissance written by Charles Warren Hollister and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1997 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Papers exploring the impact of change on aspects of the twelfth-century Anglo-Norman world. The twelfth-century renaissance, though usually seen as a French phenomenon, produced fundamental changes in the culture and politics of the wider Anglo-Norman world. The essays in this volume, by leadingscholars in this field meeting at La Bretesche, Brittany, in 1995, explore the impact of this change. Covering a variety of topics, including the transmission of Norman saints' cults, vernacular history and aristocratic values, and shifting modes of deathand dying, they have in common the elements of change and transformation occurring throughout society during the course of the Anglo-Norman era. The late Professor C. WARREN HOLLISTER taught at the University of California at Santa Barbara. Contributors: C. It draws together fifty-three manuscripts of polyphony and monophony from the college and university libraries of Cambridge, all selected for their textual and historical importance. A full technical description of each source is followed by a critical appraisal, and in most cases at least one illustration is provided. Many of these manuscripts have never been adequately described in print, and this book will be a valuable work of reference for musicologists, historians and paleographers. Its plates will also provide a varied selection of transcription exercises for students of notation.
