Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early American advocates of freedom did not believe in religious liberty in spite of their Christianity, but explicitly because of their individual faith in Christ, which had been molded and instructed by the Bible. The greatest evidence of their commitment to liberty can be found in their willingness to support the cause of freedom for those different from themselves. The assertion that the Enlightenment is responsible for the American Bill of Rights may be common, but it is devoid of any meaningful connection to the actual historical account. History reveals a different story, intricately gathered from the following: Influence of William Tyndale's translation work and the court intrigues of Henry VIII Spread of the Reformation through the eyes of Martin Luther, John Knox, and John Calvin The fight to establish a bill of rights that would guarantee every American citizen the free exercise of their religion. James Madison played a key role in the founding of America and in the establishment of religious liberty. But the true heroes of our story are the common people whom Tyndale inspired and Madison marshaled for political victory. These individuals read the Word of God for themselves and truly understood both the liberty of the soul and the liberty of the mind. The History of Religious Liberty is a sweeping literary work that passionately traces the epic history of religious liberty across three centuries, from the turbulent days of medieval Europe to colonial America and the birth pangs of a new nation.
Book Synopsis Of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity by : Richard Hooker
Download or read book Of the Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity written by Richard Hooker and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2003-12-08 with total page 1004 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume One Although Richard Hooker was a representative Elizabethan in the scope of his mind and outlook, he so contrived to unite and hold in a real equilibrium a deep sympathy with the three great spiritual currents of his time, that those associating themselves with Low Church, High Church and Broad Church can all find themselves in Hooker's work today. It is a work that makes topical appeal with the attention now being paid to the work of the World Council of Churches, and the furtherance of the Ecumenical movement. Hooker's great Elizabethan guide to Church Government and Discipline is therefore both a masterpiece of English prose and one of the bulwarks fo the Established Church in England. Hooker projected eight books for the great work. The first four books of 'Ecclesiastical Polity' appeared in 1593, Book V in 1597. Hooker died in 1600 at the age of forty-six; the remaining three books were completed, though not revised, before his death. The manuscripts fell into careless or unscrupulous hands and were not published until long afterwards (1648 to 1662), and then only in mutilated form. There is an appendix containing Hooker's replies to his critics and a letter from George Crammer on the Discipline of the Church. Book Synopsis Thomas Goodwin on Union with Christ by : Jonathan M. Carter
Download or read book Thomas Goodwin on Union with Christ written by Jonathan M. Carter and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-04-21 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Goodwin has been described as 'the forgotten man of English theology' and, though known by some as a pioneer of congregationalism and a prominent member of the Westminster Assembly, the true significance and scope of his life's work has only recently been discovered. Historical reassessment has uncovered that the majority of Goodwin's treatises were intended to form a grand project defending Reformed soteriology in the 1650s against new threats as well as traditional opponents. Examining Goodwin's notion of union with Christ in relation to mystical indwelling, transformation, justification and participation, this study demonstrates the central role of union with Christ in Goodwin's soteriology. The application of salvation, he contended, must be founded on 'real' union with Christ (i.e., mystical union forged by Christ's indwelling) in order to advance a trinitarian, federal, high Reformed soteriology in which redemption from sin is set within a Reformed scheme of Christocentric deification. This in-depth analysis makes a fresh contribution to recent controversy over union with Christ in the post-Reformation period.
