This book was released on 1980 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In accordance with applicable legislative requirements, the Nashville District Corps of Engineers has conducted a cultural resources reconnaissance of 40 proposed stream rehabilitation sites and 25 proposed disposal sites located in the Cumberland River basin of Whitley, Knox, Bell, and Harlan Counties, Kentucky, sand Campbell County, Tennessee. The proposed project includes the removal of stream flow obstructions within the Upper Cumberland River mainstream source streams, and tributary streams and the disposal of materials at preselected sites. This stream project was funded by the Applachian Regional Commission. Archival information suggested that archeological evidence of historic water-powered mills might be present at several project sites. No evidence of this was identified in the field examination. Information from the State of Kentucky indicated that numerous prehistoric archeological and National Register sites were known to the counties involved. None of the sites will be affected by the project. The field work resulted in the identification of cultural resources at eight of the project work sites. All but one were historic sites and features in varying states of preservation. Recommendation included in this report.

Book Synopsis Kentucky Archaeology by : R. Barry Lewis
Download or read book Kentucky Archaeology written by R. Barry Lewis and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kentucky's rich archaeological heritage spans thousands of years, and the Commonwealth remains fertile ground for study of the people who inhabited the midcontinent before, during, and after European settlement. This long-awaited volume brings together the most recent research on Kentucky's prehistory and early history, presenting both an accurate descriptive and an authoritative interpretation of Kentucky's past. The book is arranged chronologically -- from the Ice Age to modern times, when issues of preservation and conservation have overtaken questions of identification and classification. For each time slice of Kentucky's past, the contributors describe typical communities and settlement patterns, major changes from previous cultural periods, the nature of the economy and subsistence, artifacts, the general health and characteristics of the people, and regional cultural differences. Sites discussed include the Green River shell mounds, the Central Kentucky Adena mounds and enclosures, Eastern Kentucky rockshelters, the important Wickliffe site at the confluence of the Mississippi and Ohio rivers, Fort Ancient culture villages, and the fortified towns of the Mississippian period in Western Kentucky. The authors draw from a wealth of unpublished material and offer the detailed insights and perspectives of specialists who have focused much of their professional careers on the scientific investigation of Kentucky's prehistory. The book's many graphic elements -- maps, artifact drawings, photographs, and village plans -- combined with a straightforward and readable text, provide a format that will appeal to the general reader as well as to students and specialists in other fields who wish to learn more about Kentucky's archaeology.

Book Synopsis Physical and Chemical Processes in the Aquatic Environment by : Erik R. Christensen
Download or read book Physical and Chemical Processes in the Aquatic Environment written by Erik R. Christensen and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is need in environmental research for a book on fresh waters including rivers and lakes. Compared with other books on the topic, this book has a unique outline in that it follows pollution from sources to impact. Included in the text is the treatment of various tracers, ranging from pathogens to stable isotopes of elements and providing a comprehensive discussion which is lacking in many other books on pollution control of natural waters. Geophysical processes are discussed emphasizing mixing of water, interaction between water and the atmosphere, and sedimentation processes. Important geochemistry processes occurring in natural waters are described as are the processes specific to nutrients, organic pollutants, metals, and pathogens in subsequent chapters. Each of these chapters includes an introduction on the selected groups, followed by the physicochemical properties which are the most relevant to their behavior in natural waters, and the theories and models to describe their speciation, transport and transformation. The book also includes the most up to date information including a discussion on emerging pollutants such as brominated and phosphate flame retardants, perflurochemicals, and pharmaceutical and personal care products. Due to its importance an ecotoxicology chapter has been included featuring molecular biological methods, nanoparticles, and comparison of the basis of biotic ligand model with the Weibull dose-response model. Finally, the last chapter briefly summarizes the regulations on ambient water quality.
