Book excerpt: During the past 15 years, research on anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa has grown drastically, providing empirical evidence for a more accurate classification schema of eating disorders. This book brings together the most recent clinical research concerning all facets of these distinct but interrelated disorders, providing a current overview of the psychobiology and treatment of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. Written by experts in the field, Psychobiology and Treatment of Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa reviews a diagnostic schema of eating disorders from the perspectives of cross-cultural, longitudinal, and family studies. It presents the psychobiology of anorexia and bulimia nervosa in the context of neuroendocrinology and the psychological perceptions associated with eating behavior. The book also examines the family's contribution to the development and maintenance of eating disorders from the perspective of family interaction studies. The final section of this book reviews the latest developments in the integration of psychodynamic concepts into the psychotherapy of anorexia and bulimia nervosa, covers cognitive behavioral approaches, and examines the pharmacological treatment of eating disorders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The movements toward cultural sensitivity and evidence-based practice are watershed developments in clinical psychology. As a population with a long history of substandard treatment from mental health systems, African Americans have especially benefitted from these improvements. But as with other racial and ethnic minorities, finding relevant test measures in most psychological domains presents clinicians with an ongoing challenge. The Guide to Psychological Assessment with African Americans aims to close the evaluation/therapy gap by giving practitioners the tools to choose appropriate instruments while respecting client individuality. Expert contributors analyze scarce and far-flung data, identify strengths and limitations of measures and norms in their use with African-American clients, and advise on avoiding biases in interpreting results. The editors advocate for a theory-based hypothesis-testing approach to assessment when empirical evidence is lacking, and offer guidelines for decision-making that is effective as well as ethnically aware. The Guide's findings, insights, and practical information cover the gamut of test and diagnostic areas, including: IQ and personality. Generalized anxiety disorder, panic, and phobias. Neuropsychological assessment, cognitive decline, and dementia. Mood disorders and suicidality. Forensic assessment, risk, and recidivism. Measures specific to children and adolescents. Plus PTSD, substance disorders, eating pathology, and more. Expertly complementing cross-cultural treatment texts, the Guide to Psychological Assessment with African Americans stands out as a trustworthy resource for treatment planning useful to clinical psychologists, neuropsychologists, and clinical social workers.

Critical Food Issues: Problems and State-of-the-Art Solutions Worldwide examines 31 crucial areas of concern, from soil degradation, depletion of water for irrigation, and loss of biodiversity to declining rural livelihoods, hunger and obesity, unjust farm labor practices, and farm animal mistreatment. Critical Food Issues divides its coverage into two exhaustive volumes, one on bioenvironmental topics and one with a sociocultural focus. Throughout, highly accomplished experts from a variety of academic backgrounds review the current state of research on specific problems, then identify strategies for confronting those problems that balance sustainable agrifood systems with environmental stewardship, healthy people, and equitable communities. At a time of increasing public outcries over the quality of food and the impact of agrifood production on long-term environmental and human well-being, Critical Food Issues offers an authoritative and comprehensive basis on which producers, consumers, and citizens can make more informed decisions about the future of food.

Chrisler The Development of Gender Studies in Psychology Studies of sex differences are as old as the ?eld of psychology, and they have been conducted in every sub?eld of the discipline. There are probably many reasons for the popularity of these studies, but three reasons seem to be most prominent. First, social psychological studies of person perception show that sex is especially salient in social groups. It is the ?rst thing people notice about others, and it is one of the things we remember best (Fiske, Haslam, & Fiske, 1991; Stangor, Lynch, Duan, & Glass, 1992). For example, people may not remember who uttered a witty remark, but they are likely to remember whether the quip came from a woman or a man. Second, many people hold ?rm beliefs that aspects of physiology suit men and women for particular social roles. Men’s greater upper body strength makes them better candidates for manual labor, and their greater height gives the impression that they would make good leaders (i. e. , people we look up to). Women’s reproductive capacity and the caretaking tasks (e. g. , breastfeeding, baby minding) that accompany it make them seem suitable for other roles that require gentleness and nurturance. Third, the logic that underlies hypothesis testing in the sciences is focused on difference. Researchers design their studies with the hope that they can reject the null hypothesis that experimental groups do not differ.
