Book excerpt: This cross-cultural study investigates help-seeking for depression among Japanese primary school teachers. Help-seeking for depressive symptoms is examined quantitatively by administering the Help-Seeking Scale for Depression among participants. In addition, this study qualitatively examines the help-seeking pathways of participants according to Kleinman's explanatory model of help-seeking. The objective of the study was to determine possible motivators for Japanese and other Asian people to seek professional help for symptoms of mental illness. The participants consisted of 71 Japanese school teachers from four primary schools located in the Kansai region of Japan. Participants' conceptualizations of depression were assessed using the Help-Seeking Scale for Depression (HSSD) after reading a vignette describing depressive symptoms. Participants' perceived severity of depressive symptoms (hypothesis 1) and prior therapy/counseling experience (hypothesis 2) significantly predicted professional help-seeking. The prevalence of depression was significantly higher in female participants (hypothesis 3); results indicating prevalence were non-significant for males. Hypotheses 1 and 2 were supported at p

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers ways to resolve the imbalance between the demand and supply of mental health services. Treatment services in most countries reach only a minority of people identified as suffering from a mental disorder. Few countries can provide adequate health services for all the mentally ill, yet none has developed a rational system to decide who should be treated. The questions are clear. Could we develop a staged treatment process to reach all in need? If not, how do we decide who to treat? What should the criteria be for deployment of scarce treatment resources? How do we determine such criteria? What are the ethical implications of applying such criteria? In this pioneering work, an international team of eminent psychiatrists, epidemiologists, health administrators, economists and health planners examine these questions. The result will inform and encourage all concerned with the equitable provision of mental health care.

Book excerpt: Describing individual differences in help-seeking is crucial for developing a culturallycontextualized understanding of help-seeking trends in Japan. One measure used to address this need is the Help-Seeking Style Scale (Nagai, 2013). Past research demonstrates that help-seeking style is predictive of actual help-seeking behavior, but less is known about the relationship between help-seeking style and psychological distress. This meta-analytic dissertation assesses the predictive value of the three help-seeking style subscales and draws cross-group comparisons for the relationship between help-seeking style and distress. Three separate meta-analyses were performed with a dataset of eight studies, and a second dataset of four studies was used in a network meta-analysis. Findings suggested that avoidant help-seeking predicts greater distress, and that this relationship is stronger for women than for men. Self-directed help-seeking was an inconsistent predictor of distress. Excessive help-seeking was a poor predictor of distress in the first dataset, but the excessive help-seeking group was more distressed than the self-directed help-seeking group in the second dataset. Implications and recommendations for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: The EUROHIS project has focused on the comparability of health surveys and has uncovered some problems that arise when aiming to compare data from different countries. Similar problems of cross-cultural comparability also arise when comparing data from other sources, such as health registers, and are just as complex and difficult to tackle. One of the main advantages of health surveys, however, is the relatively low cost and time involved in adapting them according to the needs of health policy-makers. This work shows that the output from the EUROHIS project provides common instruments for the measurement of eight health indicators. The development of these instruments has required careful consideration of relevant common concepts and how these should be defined and operationalized. The instruments are freely available for use by all countries, with the aim of enhancing national health information systems and facilitating cross-national comparisons of health data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "..a blending of two important approaches to understanding psychopathology- the developmental approach and the vulnerability approach. I think a book like this is timely, is needed, and would be of interest to professors who teach courses in psychopathology at the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels." — Robin Lewis, Old Dominion University "Bringing together developmental psychopathology frameworks and the vulnerability-stress models of psychological disorders is an excellent idea. I am aware of no other book that incorporates these two approaches. Having taught Psychopathology courses for both master′s and doctoral students, I reviewed many books to recommend and use in the courses. It is my belief that a book of this type is needed particularly for graduate students." —Linda Guthrie, Tennessee State University Edited by Benjamin L. Hankin and John R. Z. Abela, Development of Psychopathology: A Vulnerability-Stress Perspective brings together the foremost experts conducting groundbreaking research into the major factors shaping psychopathological disorders across the lifespan in order to review and integrate the theoretical and empirical literature in this field. The volume editors build upon two important and established research and clinical traditions: developmental psychopathology frameworks and vulnerability-stress models of psychological disorders. In the past two decades, each of these separate approaches has blossomed. However, despite the scientific progress each has achieved individually, no forum previously brought these traditions together in the unified way accomplished in this book. Key Features: Consists of three-part text that systematically integrates vulnerability-stress models of psychopathology with a developmental psychopathological approach. Brings together leading experts in the field of vulnerability, stress, specific vulnerabilities to psychological disorders, psychopathological disorders, and clinical interventions. Takes a cross-theoretical, integrative approach presenting cutting-edge theory and research at a sophisticated level. Development of Psychopathology will be a valuable resource for upper-division undergraduate and graduate students in clinical psychology, as well as for researchers, doctoral students, clinicians, and instructors in the areas of developmental psychopathology, clinical psychology, experimental psychopathology, psychiatry, counseling psychology, and school psychology.
