Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Creedless Gospel and the Gospel Creed These, however, were the words of an outsider. No member of the Apostolic Church itself would or could have ever spoken thus, for since the descent of the Holy Ghost at Pentecost, God has charged Christians with a personal responsibility as witnesses for Him in the world; witnesses that He is such a Being as Christ alone has revealed Him; witnesses left in this lower world by the Ascended Christ, Who is now on the throne of glory, to preach the glad tidings of His Incarnation and Death, His mighty Resurrection and glorious Ascension, and of the Coming of the Holy Ghost. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospel and the Creed 'The Purpose and Aim of this Congress is', according to the statement on the front page of its programme, 'to extend the Knowledge of Catholic Faith and practice at home and abroad, and, by this means, to bring men and women to a true realization of our Lord Jesus Christ, as their personal Saviour and King.' The ultimate purpose here stated is one with which every Christian man must have sympathy: and it appeals with special force to members of the Church of England, as it combines in its purview the evangelical message of Salvation through Christ and the reference to Catholic faith and practice. I do not think, therefore, that I need, in any way, to apologize for my presence here to-day; though I am, of course, aware that some, perhaps many, of those here present may support beliefs and practices which do not seem to me to be either rightly described as Catholic, or capable, intrinsically, of valid defence. I could not, for instance, accept many of the statements in the Handbook, under the heading 'misunderstood subjects'. I do hold, and in this I understand that we here I think it will become increasingly manifest throughout Christendom - are all likely to be agreed, that the Gospel of Jesus Christ as the Saviour of man, which is the divine answer to the doubts and hopes of man, will make firm and stable progress when it is presented by a society 'perfected together in the same mind and in the same judgement', 'speaking the same thing'. On their mountain roads, at important turns in the way, or near the hardest places, they erect shelters of rest, where the weary traveller may enjoy the prospect and refresh himself for climbing still further upward. Something like this is my justification for sending forth this little book. It is not claimed that a new Christ is here set forth, or that startlingly new truths have been discovered concerning the Christ already known. The claim is simply that at a turn in the arduous way I 'have caught a glimpse of Jesus from what, to me, is a fresh viewpoint. And on the spot I set up this wayside shrine, that others, also, in passing may look and see and be refreshed. Why have the Judeans, Romans, and Persians—among others—seen the Christian creed as a threat to the established social order? In The Creed: Professing the Faith Through the Ages, bestselling author Dr. Scott Hahn recovers and conveys the creed’s revolutionary character. Tracing the development of the first formulations of faith in the early Church through later ecumenical councils, The Creed tells the story of how the very profession of our belief in Christ fashions us for heavenly life as we live out our earthly days.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gospels The object of the Oxford Library of Practical Theo logy is to supply some carefully considered teaching on matters of Religion to that large body of devout laymen who desire instruction, but are not attracted by the learned treatises which appeal to the theo logian. One of the needs of the time would seem to be, to translate the solid theological learning, of which there is no lack, into the vernacular of' everyday practical religion; and while steering a course between what is called plain teaching on the one hand and erudition on the other, to supply some sound and readable instruction to those who require it, on the subjects included under the common title 'the Christian Religion, ' that they may be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh them a reason of the hope that is in them, with meekness and fear. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Salvation From Sin, the End of Christian Faith In denying that the Old Testament saints were born of God, we must not be understood as denying that they had any religion. It appears by the passage above quoted, that there are two dis tinct stages in religious experience, in the first of which men may properly be called servants of God, while yet they are not sons. It is important that this distinction should be clearly seen, and constantly kept in view. We admit, and teach, that the Old Testament saints were servants of God in the ages before Christ, and that they became sons at his coming. But what is the difference between servants and sons? Did not the Old Testament saints love God Yes and so many servants love and honor their masters, while yet there is no vital union, no blood-relationship between them. So there was no vital union between God and man, till Christ came in the flesh. Abraham was called the friend of God, and he doubtless loved God as a man loves his friend but it is not said in scripture, and it is not true, that Christ was in him that he dwelt in God, and God in him. This spiritual indwelling was hid from ages and from generations, and was manifested only after the mission of Christ. Col. 1 26, 27. It is this that brings men into blood-relationship to God, so that they are entitled to the name of sons of God.
