Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of Study in Language for Elementary Schools and Handbook to Accompany the California State Series d104 It has finally come to pass that the principles upon which existing courses of study are founded and methods of teaching based are being openly questioned. As teachers become less and less an isolated class and mingle more with intelligent citizens who are actually carrying on the work of the world, they are beginning to awaken to the fact that many of the notions which they have held as self-evident truths are such, nowhere except within the walls of the schoolroom. The purpose of this preface is to show some common sense principles which may be employed in effective language teaching. The author has also attempted to make plain that the tenets underlying the majority of the language text-books are merely pedantries which would long ago have been discarded by any class of people except those who relied upon their ancestors to do their thinking for them. Language teaching has long consisted in the learning of a series of definitions and rules. While these may be good as pedantic ornaments, yet neither case enables a pupil to choose the correct language forms. I. Children only learn correct written forms by the habit of writing them - there is no equivalent for habit. Aristotle years ago pointed out that the learning of the definition of wealth never made a man wealthy. Pedagogues, who as a class have spent their lives learning definitions, should long ago have discovered this simple truth by inspection of their own bank accounts. If a man secured a book, learned all the rules for guiding and controlling an automobile, and had all the terms explained so that he understood them thoroughly, then presented himself as a chauffeur, would the owner of the machine hear him recite his rules and definitions, and, upon finding him letter perfect, send him out to give his wife and children a ride? Yet this same method is the common one now used in teaching language. "A sentence is a group of words expressing a complete thought," the book tells the child, "Begin it with a capital letter and close it with a period," and the child having learned the definition and rule is expected ever afterwards to obey its dictates. Lie is a transitive verb. Its parts are lie, lay, lain. Remember this," says the book, "and you will make no mistakes," and yet high school graduates, knowing and writing the above statements, give as an illustration: Mother laid down to rest yesterday. One can go out any day and watch a carpenter mark out and fit two boards together at an obtuse angle, but the carpenter knows no definition for an obtuse angle. He has learned to do the thing and that is what counts. A little girl watches her mother as she sits sewing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course of Study in Grammar and Handbook to Accompany the California State Series Text The writers of this Bulletin belong to the class who are convinced that grammar should be entirely removed from the course of study of the elementary schools. The current reason which has been offered for the teaching of English grammar is that it teaches the pupils "to speak and write the English language correctly." A century's experience of grammar teaching has proved conclusively to those who take the trouble to read the results of this experience that the promise has never been realized in any practicable degree. Experience for a number of years with high school graduates, who have not only passed through the grammar study of the elementary schools, but also have had courses in the grammar of some dead or foreign language in the high school, shows that less than ten per cent have anything whatever to show for their grammar study except the decayed remains of a few definitions, usually quite meaningless to them, and never usable in the correction of errors in writing or speech. Not one in twenty could offer intelligent grammatical reasons why the following current forms of speech are incorrect: It don't matter. Let the affair rest between you and I. He done right. The rose smells sweet. Every one should hang up their hats. Whom did you say called? If I was you I would not do it. Neither of them answer. Each of the many officers in the various political clubs who have votes to east are directed to report to this office to take up their duties. If any one doubts this statement, the truth or falsity can be proved to ample satisfaction by testing a few high school classes. The fact of the matter is that our grammar teaching is a hopeless bankrupt, and is, therefore, a positive waste of time. Moreover, as taught, it is one of the studies that deaden school life and tend to increase the number of pupils who leave school because neither they nor their intelligent parents can find the use of it. To that fretful argument which is always offered when this bankruptcy is proved to one of its supporters, that the results would not be what they are if we used proper methods of teaching, - it is useless to reply. It is to be doubted that there are any successful methods, and if there are, they are certainly impracticable, for otherwise, we would have found them after a century's failure. Let us give it up. There is really no necessity for teaching grammar. A large percentage of people already write and speak with current accuracy. Based on 30 years of research and fieldwork, the fourth edition of the bestseller School, Family, and Community Partnerships: Your Handbook for Action, presents tools and guidelines to help develop more effective and more equitable programs of family and community engagement. Written by a team of well-known experts, it provides a theory and framework of six types of involvement for action; up-to-date research on school, family, and community collaboration; and new materials for professional development and on-going technical assistance. Readers also will find: Examples of best practices on the six types of involvement from preschools, and elementary, middle, and high schools Checklists, templates, and evaluations to plan goal-linked partnership programs and assess progress CD-ROM with slides and notes for two presentations: A new awareness session to orient colleagues on the major components of a research-based partnership program, and a full One-Day Team Training Workshop to prepare school teams to develop their partnership programs. As a foundational text, this handbook demonstrates a proven approach to implement and sustain inclusive, goal-linked programs of partnership. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Languages of the Coast of California North of San Francisco To Mrs. Phoebe A. Hearst, whose generosity began ten years ago to secure for the University of California a valuable series of anthropological museum collections, and has since supported an Ethnological and Archaeological Survey of California, the credit is due for the following pages. The paper completes the preliminary studies of a grammatical nature made by the author among the languages of California since 1901. Taken in conjunction with his previous articles in this series and those prepared by other investigators working for the University, together with the studies made of several languages of northeastern California by Dr. R. B. Dixon, and the two or three works published before Mrs. Hearst enabled the University to turn its attention to the field, the present paper brings the knowledge of the subject to a point where at least some information is available on the structure of practically every linguistic family in the state. The territory covered by the present treatise is that lying between the Coast range and the sea from San Francisco to the northern boundary of the state. Two languages in this area have previously been monographically treated in the present series of publications: the Athabascan family as represented by Hupa, by Dr. Goddard,1 and Chimariko, an isolated stock, by Dr. Dixon.2 These are accordingly not included here. Those sketched are, in order from south to north, Miwok, Porno, Yuki, Wiyot, Yurok, Karok. Further studies of Yurok are in progress; and the author hopes to continue a more detailed examination of Yuki and Karok. No attempt at an exhaustive treatment of these languages has therefore been made: the descriptions of them are preliminary. The accounts given of the other three languages make use of all the information that has been gathered, and are therefore somewhat fuller. It must be clearly understood that while languages may be spoken of, it is really linguistic families that are dealt with.
