Book excerpt: Through its rapid progress in the last decade, HOOcontrol became an established control technology to achieve desirable performances of con trol systems. Several highly developed software packages are now avail able to easily compute an HOOcontroller for anybody who wishes to use HOOcontrol. It is questionable, however, that theoretical implications of HOOcontrol are well understood by the majority of its users. It is true that HOOcontrol theory is harder to learn due to its intrinsic mathemat ical nature, and it may not be necessary for those who simply want to apply it to understand the whole body of the theory. In general, how ever, the more we understand the theory, the better we can use it. It is at least helpful for selecting the design options in reasonable ways to know the theoretical core of HOOcontrol. The question arises: What is the theoretical core of HOO control? I wonder whether the majority of control theorists can answer this ques tion with confidence. Some theorists may say that the interpolation theory is the true essence of HOOcontrol, whereas others may assert that unitary dilation is the fundamental underlying idea of HOOcontrol. The J spectral factorization is also well known as a framework of HOOcontrol. A substantial number of researchers may take differential game as the most salient feature of HOOcontrol, and others may assert that the Bounded Real Lemma is the most fundamental building block.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An excellent introduction to feedback control system design, this book offers a theoretical approach that captures the essential issues and can be applied to a wide range of practical problems. Its explorations of recent developments in the field emphasize the relationship of new procedures to classical control theory, with a focus on single input and output systems that keeps concepts accessible to students with limited backgrounds. The text is geared toward a single-semester senior course or a graduate-level class for students of electrical engineering. The opening chapters constitute a basic treatment of feedback design. Topics include a detailed formulation of the control design program, the fundamental issue of performance/stability robustness tradeoff, and the graphical design technique of loopshaping. Subsequent chapters extend the discussion of the loopshaping technique and connect it with notions of optimality. Concluding chapters examine controller design via optimization, offering a mathematical approach that is useful for multivariable systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This versatile book teaches control system design using H-Infinity techniques that are simple and compatible with classical control, yet powerful enough to quickly allow the solution of physically meaningful problems. The authors begin by teaching how to formulate control system design problems as mathematical optimization problems and then discuss the theory and numerics for these optimization problems. Their approach is simple and direct, and since the book is modular, the parts on theory can be read independently of the design parts and vice versa, allowing readers to enjoy the book on many levels. Until now, there has not been a publication suitable for teaching the topic at the undergraduate level. This book fills that gap by teaching control system design using H^\infty techniques at a level within reach of the typical engineering and mathematics student. It also contains a readable account of recent developments and mathematical connections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main accomplishments of control in the 1980s was the development of H-infinity techniques. This book teaches control system design using H-infinity methods. Students will find this book easy to use because it is conceptually simple. They will find it useful because of the widespread appeal of classical frequency domain methods. Classical control has always been presented as trial and error applied to specific cases; Helton and Merino provide a much more precise approach. This has the tremendous advantage of converting an engineering problem to one that can be put directly into a mathematical optimization package. After completing this course, students will be familiar with how engineering specs are coded as precise mathematical constraints.

Book excerpt: The fundamental problem in control engineering is to provide robust performance to uncertain plants. H -control theory began in the early eighties as an attempt to lay down rigorous foundations on the classical robust control requirements. It now turns out that H -control theory is at the crossroads of several important directions of research space or polynomial approach to control and classical interpolation theory; harmonic analysis and operator theory; minimax LQ stochastic control and integral equations. The book presents the underlying fundamental ideas, problems and advances through the pen of leading contributors to the field, for graduate students and researchers in both engineering and mathematics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 90s robust control theory has seen major advances and achieved a new maturity, centered around the notion of convexity. The goal of this book is to give a graduate-level course on this theory that emphasizes these new developments, but at the same time conveys the main principles and ubiquitous tools at the heart of the subject. Its pedagogical objectives are to introduce a coherent and unified framework for studying the theory, to provide students with the control-theoretic background required to read and contribute to the research literature, and to present the main ideas and demonstrations of the major results. The book will be of value to mathematical researchers and computer scientists, graduate students planning to do research in the area, and engineering practitioners requiring advanced control techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in H∞ Control Theory is concerned with state-of-the-art developments in three areas: the extended treatment of mostly deterministic switched systems with dwell-time; the control of retarded stochastic state-multiplicative noisy systems; and a new approach to the control of biochemical systems, exemplified by the threonine synthesis and glycolytic pathways. Following an introduction and extensive literature survey, each of these major topics is the subject of an individual part of the book. The first two parts of the book contain several practical examples taken from various fields of control engineering including aircraft control, robot manipulation and process control. These examples are taken from the fields of deterministic switched systems and state-multiplicative noisy systems. The text is rounded out with short appendices covering mathematical fundamentals: σ-algebra and the input-output method for retarded systems. Advances in H∞ Control Theory is written for engineers engaged in control systems research and development, for applied mathematicians interested in systems and control and for graduate students specializing in stochastic control.
