Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Course in Expository Writing The English teacher, more perhaps than any other, is consciously aiming, not to give his students information, but to make them acquire capacity, - capacity, in this case, for expressing their thought to others. But it is only by writing that the student can learn to write well, though much writing may not teach this, and one of the difficulties which an English teacher has to meet is a no less fundamental one than the difficulty of getting his students to write at all - to write, that is, not perfunctorily, but spontaneously, for this is the only kind of writing that counts. This difficulty has its source, at least very largely, in the student's sense of the artificial character of his work. What is the use, he thinks, of writing about the birthplace of Hawthorne, or the character of Lady Macbeth? His teacher knows all about them beforehand, and besides, he isn't writing to his teacher, he isn't writing to anybody, he is just "writing a composition" that is to be corrected for spelling, punctuation, paragraphing; or for its lack of certain qualities, such as "clearness," "precision," and "unity." No wonder he finds it hard to write. We ourselves, when alone, do not usually talk aloud about the things around us, describe the picture before us, or the desk, or the view. We should feel "silly" to be talking to nobody. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Its con cern with human documents, with concrete action and events, with feeling as well as thought, gives it in point of the student's interest marked advantages over descriptive, expository, or argumentative writing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Expository Writing: Materials for a College Course in Exposition by Analysis and Imitation; Compiled and Edited, With Questions and Exercises A writer who has cultivated the habit of seeking clearness of thought will not be content with hasty or ill-considered work. Neither will he find himself willing to attempt subjects that are beyond his abilities, but will keep the selection of subjects within the sphere of his actual experience and definite knowl edge. There is no excuse for a writer's not having the habit of seeking clearness of knowledge, for it is obtainable, as Hux ley says, by any one who possesses a tolerably clear head and a decent conscience and who is willing to give himself the nec essary trouble. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Expository Writing Since one of the pleasures of life is in being indebted to friends for kindnesses so generously given that the givers were unaware of the indebtedness which they were creating, the author is happy to set forth several acknowledgments of most helpful counsel and aid. To Dr. Emerson G. Sutcliffe, with whom a complete text on the whole subject of rhetoric had been projected, only to be set aside, and to result, for the present, in the text now published, the author wishes to ex press his thanks for advice, criticism, and general wise help throughout the preparation of this text. Dr. Herbert L. Creek read many sections of the book in manuscript, and made val nable suggestions. At the suggestion of Dr. Jacob Zeitlin the chapter on the Informal Essay was rewritten, with much improvement. Helpful advice was given concerning different sections of the book by Dr. Frank W. Scott, Dr. Harold N. Hillebrand, Dr. Clarissa Rinaker, and Miss Ruth Kelso. Dr. Robert C. Whitford and Mr. Bruce Weirick read a part of the book and kindly commented upon it. All these kind friends were members, at the time of giving aid, of the faculty of the University of Illinois. To Professor Fred L. Pattee, of the Pennsylvania State College, the author feels an especial debt of gratitude for unfailing interest and cheer and much wise counsel. T G Mr. Warner G. Rice, a student in the University of Illinois, the author wishes to make acknowledgment for reading one chapter in manuscript and making valuable sug gestions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone talks about style, but no one explains it. The authors of this book do; and in doing so, they provoke the reader to consider style, not as an elegant accessory of effective prose, but as its very heart. At a time when writing skills have virtually disappeared, what can be done? If only people learned the principles of verbal correctness, the essential rules, wouldn't good prose simply fall into place? Thomas and Turner say no. Attending to rules of grammar, sense, and sentence structure will no more lead to effective prose than knowing the mechanics of a golf swing will lead to a hole-in-one. Furthermore, ten-step programs to better writing exacerbate the problem by failing to recognize, as Thomas and Turner point out, that there are many styles with different standards. In the first half of Clear and Simple, the authors introduce a range of styles--reflexive, practical, plain, contemplative, romantic, prophetic, and others--contrasting them to classic style. Its principles are simple: The writer adopts the pose that the motive is truth, the purpose is presentation, the reader is an intellectual equal, and the occasion is informal. Classic style is at home in everything from business memos to personal letters, from magazine articles to university writing. The second half of the book is a tour of examples--the exquisite and the execrable--showing what has worked and what hasn't. Classic prose is found everywhere: from Thomas Jefferson to Junichirō Tanizaki, from Mark Twain to the observations of an undergraduate. Here are many fine performances in classic style, each clear and simple as the truth. Originally published in 1994. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Written and Spoken English, Vol. 1: A Course in Composition and Rhetoric Part II is a carefully organized summary of illustrated rules in punctuation, capitalization, sentence structure, and diction, intended for daily reference. A Key to these rules is given on pages 288 - 291 to aid the teacher in mark ing themes, and the method is illustrated on page 287. The teacher will place a rule number on the pupil's theme opposite an error. The pupil will study the rule and then correct his theme, thus learning the principle in the most practical way. Learn to do by doing well is the message this book has for the pupil. The author is convinced that careless theme writing does the pupil more harm than good, and that the habitual use of improper diction or incorrect sentence construction in classroom exercises often fixes bad habits so thoroughly in the mind of the pupil that they remain with him through life. Throughout the book, therefore, he correlates composition work with grammatical and rhetorical theory, and at all times he insists that the pupil write the themes carefully and neatly and then correct the errors after the teacher has indicated where they are. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Rhetoric: A Course in Plain Prose Composition This book differs from most treatises upon rhetoric and composition in two particulars - arrangement, and propor tion. The common order is reversed, and the study of words, instead of being put first, is put last, while at the outset attention is centred upon methods of gathering and ordering material. The reason for this should be plain. Composition must begin with ideas. Diction is the very last consideration in the process of constructing an essay it may even be reserved until revision. If words be thrust first upon the attention, the student naturally supposes that words, instead of the ideas behind them, are his raw material. Composition becomes to him wholly an artificial thing. Freshness, independence, naturalness, ease, are put far from him, perhaps never to be attained. It is a matter of history that, excepting here and there a Pater and a Stevenson, our masters of letters have not come into their kingdom through wrestling with words. 'such I offer as the main defense of this book, and reason for its being. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Rhetoric and English Composition: Second High School Course It is obvious that a writer's main purposes in com position are (i) that what he writes Should be under stood by the reader; (2) that what he writes should impress the reader forcibly; and (3) that what he writes should impress the reader favorably, z'.e.
