Book Synopsis Leisure Education: A Cross-National View by : Atara Sivan
Download or read book Leisure Education: A Cross-National View written by Atara Sivan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-08 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leisure education plays a central role in both the field of leisure studies and the pursuit of leisure itself. Everywhere in the modern world the most effective use of free time for individuals comes with knowing about the many leisure activities available to them and the rewards and costs that accompany their interest in each. It is through leisure education in one form or another that they gain such knowledge. Yet, as important as this educational process is, its study is only beginning to take off in non-Western societies where, however, it cannot be assumed to be the same as in the West. This book contains several comparisons of Western and non-Western practices in leisure education. Knowing these practices contributes ultimately to a deep understanding of the nature of the huge variety of leisure activities enjoyed across the planet and of the reasons why people go in for the ones they do. This book was based on a special issue published in the World Leisure Journal.

Leisure is more than “doing nothing” or “hanging out.” It has implications for society, affecting economics, politics, business, health, and the environment. On an individual level, it offers multiple opportunities for personal growth and development. And it contributes to a better quality of life for individuals and communities as a whole. With Dimensions of Leisure for Life: Individuals and Society, students will learn to understand and appreciate leisure and explore the ways that their leisure choices can help them lead happier, more balanced lives both now and in the future. ... With contributions from 22 leading professors, the book examines the following: the concept of leisure, including the various ways in which it has been defined and described, the benefits associated with it, the scope of the leisure industry field, and the basis for studying leisure as a social science; the impact of leisure on quality of life, health, physical activity and stress levels, and overall happiness and well-being; the social significance of leisure, including the interaction of leisure with history, contemporary society, technology, the environment, economics, and politics and public policy; the factors that influence each individual's leisure choices and level of involvement in leisure activities, such as awareness of local options, barriers of age, gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, religion, or socioeconomic status, geographic distribution of leisure spaces; and maturity level and stage of development."--Publisher.

Book Synopsis The Relationships Between Leisure Participation, Leisure Satisfaction, and Life Satisfaction in College Students by : Chin-Tsu Chen
Download or read book The Relationships Between Leisure Participation, Leisure Satisfaction, and Life Satisfaction in College Students written by Chin-Tsu Chen and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: The present investigation was designed to examine the relationships between leisure participation, leisure satisfaction, and life satisfaction in college students. The participants (N = 171) were freshman students at Springfield College, Massachusetts. Based on the demographic information provided by participants, 94 were male (55%) and 77 were female (45%). Of all the participants, 71 worked part time while attending school, and 100 did not work. The average age was 18. 5 for all. The Pearson product moment correlation coefficients were computed to determine the relationships between leisure participation, leisure satisfaction, and life satisfaction. A significant positive relationship was found between leisure participation and leisure satisfaction (HP =.005). No significant relationship existed between leisure participation and life satisfaction (p =.333). A significant positive relationship between leisure satisfaction and life satisfaction was found (p = .002). Although significant relationships were found between leisure participation and leisure satisfaction, and between leisure satisfaction and life satisfaction, the correlations were weak. Additional study is recommended to identify other factors that could be related to leisure and life satisfaction in college students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book extends positive psychology by embedding leisure into the positive science field, following a new paradigm and aggregating various domains and fields. Positive science can be applied to the field of leisure and, in turn, leisure can serve as an arena to study some of the most important optimal functioning variables. The book presents knowledge on a diverse range of topics about optimizing socio-cognitive processes and behaviors, places and contexts, societies and cultures through leisure. These topics are unified by an underlying continuum that extends from individuals and subjective experiences to social worlds. The contributions highlight components of everyday life, showing that subjective experience and life trajectories are structured and social goals and life purposes are defined and achieved within interactions between individuals and their lived contexts and environments in daily life. .

Book Synopsis The Sociology of Leisure by : Stanley Parker
Download or read book The Sociology of Leisure written by Stanley Parker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-10-17 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s the subject of leisure was attracting interest among both social scientists and people concerned with developing recreation policies. A relative newcomer to the sociological scene at the time, leisure was beginning to compete in research effort and theory-building with the more established fields of sociology. As well as making an academic contribution, this book, originally published in 1976, provided practitioners (such as planners, administrators and managers) with an up-to-date and comprehensive review of social research finding over the whole field of leisure. Part One deals with the cultural context in which leisure, as we knew it, had developed, and includes the history of leisure in industrial society and the variety of ways in which people can experience leisure at various stages of the life cycle. In Part Two leisure is related to other spheres of life – work, the family, education and religion. Part Three relates academic to practical concerns of planning and providing for leisure, including factors in demand and supply. The final chapter examines what the sociology of leisure had to tell us about current trends in society and the directions of probable future change. The illustrative material, drawn from a wide variety of sources, is mainly British but also includes some contributions from the United States and other countries.
