Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between body image and self-esteem among female Asians and Caucasians. Body Image and self-esteem are significant determinants of behavior and deficits in either can produce wide ranging implications in physical and psycho-social functioning, health and well-being. Data was collected from 160 university Asian and Caucasian students between the ages of 18 and 30. Self-esteem was measured using the Rosenberg Self Esteem Scale while body image was assessed using Cash's Multidimensional Body Self Relations Questionnaire. Additional information was gathered for height and weight for the calculation of BMI, and the Marlowe Crowne Social Desirability Scale was used to measure avoidance of disapproval. Asian Students were assessed for cultural values using the Asian-American Values Scale - Multidimensional. Body image and Self-esteem had a positive association for both Asians and Caucasians. Self-esteem was positively correlated with several MBSRQ (body image) sub-scales: Appearance Evaluation, Fitness Evaluation, Health Evaluation, Health Orientation, and Body Areas Assessment. Body image and self-esteem was correlated with Asian/ Caucasian classification, with Asians indicating a higher level of overall self- esteem. Asians rated themselves lower in Fitness Evaluation, Fitness Orientation, Health Evaluation, Health Orientation, and Body Areas Assessment. There was no statistically significant difference in BMI between Asian and Caucasian subgroups. BMI is not correlated with how one classifies one's weight or overall self-esteem. However, appearance evaluation is correlated with BMI, with thinner respondents rating themselves less satisfied with their appearance. Being worried about one's weight was correlated with BMI. Asian acculturation was not correlated with BMI, desire to respond in a socially desirable way, nor self-esteem. Additionally, there was a negative correlation between the tendency to respond in a socially desirable way and one's self esteem. Age was not correlated with self-esteem and socially desirable responses. Implications of this study include the necessity of in-depth evaluations for body image and self-esteem. The advanced practice nurse must look beyond the appearance of weight standards as an indication of a healthy orientation to dietary practices. Evaluation tools that identify lack of exercise, dietary practices, extreme exercise and dietary restrictions, and body image should be part of the evaluations process.

Book excerpt: Poor body image and low self-esteem have been accepted as factors increasing the risk of the development of eating disorders in women. For decades research was conducted with populations of mostly White women focusing little on other races. The recent attention to ethnic differences in body image and self-esteem have not provided consistent results. With the shift in the definition of beauty in the United States that is more inclusive of differing ethnicities and body shapes prior conclusions may be invalidated. This study examined the self-esteem and body perception of Black, White, Hispanic, and Asian women at a small college. A relationship was found between self-esteem and body satisfaction independent of ethnicity. Black women were found to have the highest self-esteem and to be more satisfied with their bodies than any other group yet their mean body mass index is considered to be overweight.

Book excerpt: The relationship between self-esteem and body image has been well-established such that low levels of self-esteem have been found to be associated with body image concerns. The authors review previous research on the link between low self-esteem and body image concerns and then discuss more recent research concerning the importance of contingent self-esteem in this connection. The next chapter provides a discussion on the commonness of body dissatisfaction among contemporary Western young women and suggests re-embodiment as a means of transforming this experience. Chapter 3 explores the relationship between appearance satisfaction emotional overeating, experiences of racism and BMI among Black and African American women. Ethnic identity plays an important role in the self-concept related to feelings and attitudes. Chapter 4 explores the ethnic differences in self-esteem and body image among adolescents, as well as the need to address ethnicity in prevention programs. The remaining chapters of the book focus on body image in adolescent pregnancy; magazine image influence, extraversion and body image in college males; sociocultural factors, body image factors and self-esteem on school-age males and females, the perception of self-image in older people and how it changes throughout life; an examination of how the way woman perceive themselves influences the psychosexual impact on quality of life; and finally, how people can improve or develop a healthier investment in appearance.

Book excerpt: Abstract: A thin body and an attractive face are considered to define the desirable feminine beauty ideal and this narrow concept of beauty has been promoted through mass media. Women often compare themselves with the idealized images in the media and such comparisons may lead to body dissatisfaction and lower self-esteem. Individuals who are dissatisfied with their body are likely to engage in appearance management behaviors, such as makeup, dieting, eating disorders, and cosmetic surgery. Sociocultural theory has been used to explain the development of body dissatisfaction as negative effects of exposure to the societal beauty ideal (Posavac, Posavac, & Posavac, 1998) and social comparison theory has been used to explain how women experience body dissatisfaction and psychological problems, such as lower self-esteem and eating disorders (Richins, 1991).

Book excerpt: The current study was conducted to determine if differences between Caucasian and African American women's self-esteem; body image satisfaction, and self- perception relative to body mass index scores (BMI) would disappear when SES, and urbanicity are taken into consideration. Sixty-five Caucasian and 47 African American female students from a midsize university in East Texas volunteered to participate in the study. All volunteers were unmarried and ranged in age from 18 to 25 years. Participants completed several measures: The Multidimensional Body Self-Relations Questionnaire (Cash, 2000a) and Body-image Questionnaire (Cash, 2000b), Self-Perception Profile for College Students (Neeman & Harter, 1986), Hollingshead Four Factor Index of Social Status, and a demographic data sheet. Participants' actual weight, ideal weight, and height were obtained in order to compute their BMI. For the most part, the study hypotheses were supported. Specifically, African Americans reported greater scores in the majority of domains of self-esteem, body image satisfaction, and self-perception than their Caucasian counterparts. However, when SES and urbanicity were introduced as covariates, these differences disappeared for a large number of domains. Implications for future research and possible application of these findings are discussed.

Book excerpt: There is a growing knowledge base in understanding the differences and similarities between women and men, as well as the diversities among women and sexualities. Although genetic and biological characteristics define human beings conventionally as women and men, their experiences are contextualized in multiple dimensions in terms of gender, sexuality, class, age, ethnicity, and other social dimensions. Beyond the biological and genetic basis of gender differences, gender intersects with culture and other social locations which affect the socialization and development of women across their life span. This handbook provides a comprehensive and up-to-date resource to understand the intersectionality of gender differences, to dispel myths, and to examine gender-relevant as well as culturally relevant implications and appropriate interventions. Featuring a truly international mix of contributors, and incorporating cross-cultural research and comparative perspectives, this handbook will inform mainstream psychology of the international literature on the psychology of women and gender.

Book excerpt: This study examined perfectionism from both an individual's perspective and their perceived level of perfectionism from their family. Collectivistic values were measured to further examine how these values moderate the effects of personal and family perfectionism on depression and self-esteem. Samples of Asians/Asian-Americans and Caucasian-Americans were be used to examine how individual and family perfectionism are differentially related to self-esteem and depression for these two groups. The relationships between the study variables were examined through path analysis. The hypothesis of family perfectionism having a stronger relationship to self-esteem and depression for Asians/Asian-Americans than for Caucasian-Americans was not supported. Personal perfectionism did not have a stronger relationship to self-esteem and depression for Caucasian-Americans than for Asians/Asian-Americans. Although collectivism was expected to be a moderator in the relationships of family perfectionism with depression, self-esteem, and personal perfectionism, Caucasian-Americans and Asians/Asian-Americans did not differ on their Collectivism scores. The results questioned the notion of whether Asian-Americans are really more collectivistic than Caucasian-Americans or the validity of Triandis' (1995) Individualism-Collectivism Scale. This study provided additional support for the psychometric properties of the Almost Perfect Scale-Revised and Family version (APS-R, APS-F). The results also provided strong support for Asian-Americans reported higher Personal and Family Discrepancy levels than Caucasian-Americans, which is consistent with past studies. There seems to be a pattern of Asian-Americans reporting higher scores on items/scales that describe maladaptive aspects of mental health, which is worth further exploration. Limitations of this study and directions for future studies are discussed.

Book excerpt: "Modern industrialized society chronically and pervasively objectifies the female body, and many women have come to view themselves through the lens of an external observer, habitually monitoring their own appearance whether in public or private settings. Given the negative effects associated with self-objectification--such as body shame, appearance anxiety, depression, and disordered eating--an empirically based approach to researching and counteracting self-objectification is critical. This book integrates recent research developments and current clinical knowledge on self-objectification in women. Using Barbara L. Fredrickson and Tomi-Ann Roberts' objectification theory as a framework, the contributors address various aspects of the theory, including evidence for and causes of self-objectification across the life span, psychological consequences, and associated mental health risks. The book also discusses various scales for measuring self-objectification, as well as approaches to prevent and disrupt this phenomenon. With research from a variety of disciplines--psychology, sociology, anthropology, women's studies, and political science--this book should be read by everyone interested in the well-being of women"--Publicity materials. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation investigates the relationship between race/ethnicity and body image in a low socioeconomic group of urban adolescent boys and girls. To date, most studies on body image have studied higher SES Caucasian women and adolescent girls. Although more literature has begun to examine race/ethnicity as a factor in body image satisfaction, few have focused specifically on the impact of race/ethnicity in a low-income urban population. This study is part of a larger longitudinal study designed to examine the relationship between stress and depression in urban adolescents. The data used for this dissertation was archival and was collected during the first year of the Stress and Coping project. Data was drawn from five socio-economically disadvantaged schools in the inner city of Chicago. Measures such as the Youth Self Report (YSR) Anxious, Depressed subtest, and the Multidimensional Body Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ) were used to assess clinical depressive symptoms and body image concerns. The participants were selected from Chicago public schools that have seventy-five percent or more students from low income families. A total of 454 sixth, seventh, and eighth graders participated in this study. Because there was a disproportionate amount of African-Americans in this sample, 150 African-Americans were randomly drawn from the sample and compared to 115 Asian-Americans, 141 Hispanics, and 48 Caucasians. Thus the sample was reduced and N = 454. A 2 x 4 {gender x race) factorial analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to measure whether race/ethnicity in combination with gender and body image impact depression in adolescents. Results revealed a significant main effect for gender and for race. Results illustrated that females in this sample reported higher body image dissatisfaction and higher depressive symptoms compared to males. Results revealed that race/ethnicity is related to body image dissatisfaction but the combination of race/ethnicity and gender does not impact depressive symptoms. Thus this study finds that a relationship exists between race/ethnicity gender and body image dissatisfaction but there is not a relationship between race/ethnicity and depression in adolescents
