Book excerpt: The diaspora of the Cornish people around the globe was a remarkable phenomenon, second only in European population terms to the great migration from Ireland. A small but notable connection was made in France. This is the history of miners and their families from Cornwall who travelled to an unlikely destination in France to work the mines located in the Auvergne district of France in the town of Pontgibaud. From the 1850s to the end of that century those Cornish families became integrated with their hosts and their descendants spread around the world. This book explores both the progress of the mines and a biographical glimpse of those Cornish families.

Book excerpt: "The Metropolitan Museum of Art has some forty-five sculptures by Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848–1907), the American Beaux-Arts sculptor who worked in New York, Paris, and Cornish, New Hampshire. The Museum’s collection fully represents the range of his oeuvre—from early cameos to innovative painterly bas-reliefs to reductions after public monuments for East Coast cities. Through the lens of the Museum's unparalleled holdings as well as some related loans, this exhibition offers a reappraisal of Saint-Gaudens's groundbreaking role in the history of late nineteenth-century American sculpture and the Aesthetic Movement."--The Metropolitan Museum of Art web site

Book Synopsis Art and the Higher Life by : Kathleen Pyne
Download or read book Art and the Higher Life written by Kathleen Pyne and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-07-22 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late in the nineteenth century, many Americans were troubled by the theories of Charles Darwin, which contradicted both traditional Christian teachings and the idea of human supremacy over nature, and by an influx of foreign immigrants, who challenged the supremacy of the old Anglo-Saxon elite. In response, many people drew comfort from the theories of philosopher Herbert Spencer, who held that human society inevitably develops towards higher and more spiritual forms. In this illuminating study, Kathleen Pyne explores how Spencer’s theories influenced a generation of American artists. She shows how the painters of the 1880s and 1890s, particularly John La Farge, James McNeill Whistler, Thomas Dewing and the Boston school, and the impressionist painters of the Ten, developed an art dedicated to social refinement and spiritual ideals and to defending the Anglo-Saxon elite of which they were members. This linking of visual culture to the problematic conditions of American life radically reinterprets the most important trends in late nineteenth-century American painting.
