Book excerpt: Fatigue Life Prediction of Composites and Composite Structures, Second Edition, is a comprehensive review of fatigue damage and fatigue life modeling and prediction methodologies for composites and their use in practice. In this new edition, existing chapters are fully updated, while new chapters are introduced to cover the most recent developments in the field. The use of composites is growing in structural applications in many industries, including aerospace, marine, wind turbine and civil engineering. However, there are uncertainties about their long-term performance, including performance issues relating to cyclic fatigue loading that hinder the adoption of a commonly accepted credible fatigue design methodology for the life prediction of composite engineering structures. With its distinguished editor and international team of contributors, this book is a standard reference for industry professionals and researchers alike. Examines past, present and future trends associated with the fatigue life prediction of composite materials and structures Assesses novel computational methods for fatigue life modeling and prediction of composite materials under constant amplitude loading Covers a wide range of techniques for predicting fatigue, including their theoretical background and practical applications Addresses new topics and covers contemporary research developments in the field

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue damage development in cross-ply laminates consists of transverse matrix cracking followed by longitudinal matrix cracking, local delaminations at crack intersections, and ultimately longitudinal fiber breakage of the load-carrying plies. Ultimate failure is determined by the manner in which the load is redistributed and transferred into the load-carrying plies. A model was developed for predicting fatigue life of cross-ply laminates which develop transverse cracking up to the characteristic damage state (CDS) level before fatigue failure. The fatigue life consists of two portions: the portion necessary to reach the CDS and the residual life after attainment of the CDS. A procedure for estimating the CDS life is described based on the relationship between residual stiffness and crack density and the stress-life (S-N) curve of the 90° lamina. The residual life after CDS was obtained by calculating the stress carried by the 0° plies and assuming that these plies within the damaged laminate behave like a 0° lamina under cyclic loading. Fatigue life predictions were in good agreement with experimental results for three graphite/epoxy cross-ply laminates.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A systematic study was conducted to examine the influence of fiber-matrix interphase on the mechanical properties of composite laminates. Three material systems having the same carbon fibers and toughened epoxy matrix, but with different interphases were used in this study. The fibers used in the 810 A and 820 A systems received 100% and 200% surface treatments respectively, and were sized with epoxy material. The 8100 system was manufactured with 100% surface treated fiber that were sized with a thermoplastic material. Results indicate that the 810 0 system had significantly greater longitudinal tensile strength and failure Strain compared to the 810 A and 820 A systems. The 810 0 laminates have longer fatigue lives at higher load levels and shorter fatigue lives at lower load levels compared to the 810 A laminates. The 820 A laminates have longer life compared to the other two materials systems. The cross-ply laminates from the three material systems exhibit different damage mechanisms and failure modes under monotonic tensile and fatigue loading. A micromechanics model was developed to investigate the role of the interphase on the tensile strength of unidirectional laminates. A new parameter called the efficiency of the interface', is introduced in the model. A simple scheme that uses the experimentally determined tensile modulus of unidirectional laminates in a concentric cylinders model, is described to estimate the interfacial efficiency. The tensile fatigue performance of cross-ply laminates is predicted using this micromechanics model in a cumulative damage scheme. The predicted fatigue lives and failure modes agree well with experimental results. (MM).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report addresses the effects of spectrum loading on lifetime and residual strength of a typical fiberglass laminate configuration used in wind turbine blade construction. Over 1100 tests have been run on laboratory specimens under a variety of load sequences. Repeated block loading at two or more load levels, either tensile-tensile, compressive-compressive, or reversing, as well as more random standard spectra have been studied. Data have been obtained for residual strength at various stages of the lifetime. Several lifetime prediction theories have been applied to the results. The repeated block loading data show lifetimes that are usually shorter than predicted by the most widely used linear damage accumulation theory, Miner's sum. Actual lifetimes are in the range of 10 to 20 percent of predicted lifetime in many cases. Linear and nonlinear residual strength models tend to fit the data better than Miner's sum, with the nonlinear providing a better fit of the two. Direct tests of residual strength at various fractions of the lifetime are consistent with the residual strength models. Load sequencing effects are found to be insignificant. The more a spectrum deviates from constant amplitude, the more sensitive predictions are to the damage law used. The nonlinear model provided improved correlation with test data for a modified standard wind turbine spectrum. When a single, relatively high load cycle was removed, all models provided similar, though somewhat non-conservative correlation with the experimental results. Predictions for the full spectrum, including tensile and compressive loads were slightly non-conservative relative to the experimental data, and accurately captured the trend with varying maximum load. The nonlinear residual strength based prediction with a power law S-N curve extrapolation provided the best fit to the data in most cases. The selection of the constant amplitude fatigue regression model becomes important at the lower stress, higher cycle loading cases. The residual strength models may provide a more accurate estimate of blade lifetime than Miner's rule for some loads spectra. They have the added advantage of providing an estimate of current blade strength throughout the service life.
