Book Synopsis A Confederate Soldier in Egypt by : William Wing Loring
Download or read book A Confederate Soldier in Egypt written by William Wing Loring and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 1884 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Loring was one of many Confederate officers who after the close of the War of the Rebellion offered their services to foreign rulers. A number of these officers took their way to Egypt, and the author of this book was one of the most successful ot them all. He was made Pasha by the Khedive, and he rendered that ruler honorable and efficient service. It was natural that Loring Pasha should have been led to give his Egyptian experiences durable shape, and his book gives a clear and agreeably written account of the country. Such a writer has much more authority than the mere traveler. General Loring lived long in the country, and in intimate relations with persons at the centre of affairs; being withal a man of thought and intelligence he could not, with his opportunities, fail to acquire and retain impressions and facts of interest and value.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Confederate Soldier in Egypt The author's purpose has not been to write a history of Egypt, but to trace to their probable causes the events which have for the last decade made Egypt so conspicuous a thread in the tangled skein of Old World politics. An acquaintance of more than a quarter of a century with Eastern lands and peoples, and ten years passed in high command in Egypt itself, with unlimited opportunities for study and observation in every direction, may perhaps justify the writer in hoping that the results here presented may not be unwelcome to the general reader. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Stories in One: The Statesman; The Confederate Soldier, the Ideal Soldier of the World; The South's Peerless Women of the World His booklet has behind its publication two good and sufficient reasons. The first reason is to give to the present generation, and our Southern. Children especially, a truthful idea of Jefferson Davis, President of the Confed crate States, and his life's work for the American people, without regard to section, and we hope to refute, so far as we are able to do by this Booklet, the vile slanders that have been uttered against him and his people by the fanatical pulpit and press of the Northern States. We want our boys and girls of the South to know their fathers were not Rebels nor Traitors in 1861, but patriots, who obeyed the laws, and loved the Constitution as handed down to us by the men who made it to protect all sections alike. We want the whole world to know Jefferson Davis as we know him, the American Patriot and Statesman. Second. We want to incite in our children a spirit of study of the causes that led up to the war; we want the world to have the true story of the cruel, unjust and illegal war made upon the South and her people, waged with fanatical malice from 1861 to '65, to take from the States of the South and her people their political liberties guaranteed by the Constitution. We want the world to know the people who hated the law, in their malice because of the prosperity of the South, and if the conflict was inevitable and had to come, the South in morals had a better reason for her course than did the North. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Adventures of a Conscript From early childhood I had been a close student and an earnest seeker after knowledge. I believed it was possible in this great country of ours for a man of ambition to reach a higher and nobler life than those who were content to grow up and fall like the leaves. I had completed the common grades and was ready to enter upon higher branches when the call to arms came. In politics I had been trained in the old Whig school, and although, on account of my youth, I had taken but little interest in affairs of Government, living in the midst of slavery, and daily observing the evils of the whole system, I had become thoroughly imbued with the anti-slavery doctrine, and every day was more and more convinced in my own mind that it was wrong. When, in 1860, Mr. Lincoln was elected President, I then heard the mutterings of secession, and the boast that one Southern man was equal to ten "Yankees." In a short time one State after another followed in rapid succession, severing the ties that held them together. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Confederate Dead: Two Addresses It will be a defense of our revolutionary forefathers and of the government they established, under which for three quarters of a cen tury liberty was protected, and peace and prosperity dwelt among us. It will establish our hereditary claim to this constitutional freedom, and our fidelity alike to the teachings and to the example of our sires, and to demonstrate that the sons who fell at Manassas and in front of Richmond were equal to the sires who froze at Valley Forge and con quered at Yorktown. It will be another proof that forms of govern ment may be a deception, and that liberty was in danger - even in temples erected to her honor and at altars where priests minister in her name. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Egyptian Campaigns, 1882 to 1885 In the new and revised Edition of "The Egyptian Campaigns," the history of the military operations in Egypt has been brought down to the present time, so as to include all the recent fighting in the Soudan. This has been accompanied by a slight alteration in the title of the Book, as well as by the elimination of such details contained in the original work as are no longer of general interest. The space thus gained has been utilized for the purpose of bringing before the reader the chief events of a military character which have occurred in the interval which has elapsed since the Book first appeared. It has been the object of the Author to make the work in its present form a complete narrative of the rise and fall of the Arabist and Mahdist movements, as well as a history of England's intervention in Egypt, this last a subject on which many persons entertain somewhat vague and indistinct ideas.
