Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise History of Medicine Some good foundations have been laid, it is true, in the century previous, and men were at work in the true scientific spirit. Great masters had stimulated their successors to study in the essential preliminary subjects, the constitution and functions of the body. The mighty Boer-haave of Holland (1668-1738) had revolutionized clinical observation; Morgagni of Italy (1682-1771) had "introduced anatomical thinking into medicine" (Virchow), and had done something, the same service for pathology which Haller of Germany (1708-77) did a generation later for physiology; while John Hunter (1728-93) had not only introduced capital improvements into operative surgery, but had set the pace in research into anatomical and physiological problems. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bestselling history of medicine, enriched with a new foreword, concluding essay, and bibliographic essay. Erwin H. Ackerknecht’s A Short History of Medicine is a concise narrative, long appreciated by students in the history of medicine, medical students, historians, and medical professionals as well as all those seeking to understand the history of medicine. Covering the broad sweep of discoveries from parasitic worms to bacilli and x-rays, and highlighting physicians and scientists from Hippocrates and Galen to Pasteur, Koch, and Roentgen, Ackerknecht narrates Western and Eastern civilization’s work at identifying and curing disease. He follows these discoveries from the library to the bedside, hospital, and laboratory, illuminating how basic biological sciences interacted with clinical practice over time. But his story is more than one of laudable scientific and therapeutic achievement. Ackerknecht also points toward the social, ecological, economic, and political conditions that shape the incidence of disease. Improvements in health, Ackerknecht argues, depend on more than laboratory knowledge: they also require that we improve the lives of ordinary men and women by altering social conditions such as poverty and hunger. This revised and expanded edition includes a new foreword and concluding biographical essay by Charles E. Rosenberg, Ackerknecht’s former student and a distinguished historian of medicine. A new bibliographic essay by Lisa Haushofer explores recent scholarship in the history of medicine.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Medicine: Introducing Medical Principles to Students and Non-Medical Readers A work on Medicine must be colored, in some degree, by its author's conception of the nature of Life. On this theme there are divers views, for the full discussion of which there is here no place. The author professes himself, however, an adherent of a school of thought that is not, at present, greatly in fashion. He ranges himself as a vitalist under the banner of Aristotle and as a follower in the goodly company Of Harvey, Hunter and Virchow, of Claude Bernard and Johannes Muller. He believes that there is a principle in living things that cannot be expressed in chemical or physical terms. He believes that this principle works to an intelligible end, that it is an Entelechy, an indwelling purposiveness, and that it is as real a thing as anything that is. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Medicine in Its Salient Features In the closing days of 1917 I was asked to give a course of lectures on the history of medicine. This book is the outcome of my attempt to comply with the request made at that time. The course of lectures, given in the first place in the early weeks of 1918, followed the lines of the present table of contents. My auditors were third-year students in one of the American Schools of Medicine, and the plan of presentation was more or less consciously dictated, at the start, by the recollection of what had challenged my curiosity and aroused my attention about the time I had attained a like standing as a student of medicine. Questions and class discussions evoked by the lectures in 1918 and the three subsequent years suggested, however, certain modifications of the initial treatment of the subject and indicated in what directions additions and elucidations were most desirable. Even at the outset I felt sure that the course would be of greater interest to the men if I could trace the development of medicine, however succinctly, from the earliest times till the present day. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of the History of Medicine and the Medical Profession To attain both the objects thus indicated, by bringing to the notice of his colleagues, the practitioners of medicine, the history of their depart ment and their profession, was the original design of the author in the publication of the present work. For those who are interested solely in literary aims his book was not written, and accordingly he has omitted extended bibliographical notices, preferring to refer the reader for these to the larger manuals on this subject.' His plan has been to consider first the genetic side of the subject, introducing for this purpose a sketch of even prehistoric medicine, and next to set forth the history of the medical pro fession in considerable detail. In both departments he has striven to present the subject in such a manner as should awaken and maintain the interest of the reader. Whether he has failed in his purpose or fallen behind the aims which he had set before him it is not for him to decide. No man is perfect; neither is any book. But in so weighty an undertaking as the publication of a work on general history the author hopes for that indulgence which may be claimed, indeed, by every man who has done his work honestly. According to the measure of his strength, and who seeks to appear no greater than he really is. Of course. For most of the facts recorded in the present work the author is indebted to others. Still he has everywhere preserved the right of inde pendent examination and judgment as to who, among the often conflicting authorities, seems, on the whole, the most reliable. Many things, however, he has proved by reference to the original authorities, and thus made them, as it were, his own. The conception of the history of medicine as a branch of the general history of civilization, a large portion of the history of the profession and his account of the most ancient and most recent develop ments of medical art, he believes he may also justly claim as original. That the book has found so conscientious a collaborator, to whom it is indebted for considerable amplification particularly in the sections on English and American medicine, with which he was, of course, better acquainted than the author - and numerous corrections, is an advantage which no one can better appreciate than the author himself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Epitome of the History of Medicine: Based Upon a Course of Lectures Delivered in the University of Buffalo That a second edition of a work of this character should be called for within a year after the appearance of the first is naturally a source of the greatest satisfaction to its writer, while it indicates as well that his sincere hope has been fulfilled, in that the profession generally are manifesting a deep, genuine interest in the important subjects of which it briefly treats. This has been so uniformly the expressed opinion of the book reviewers that I have been the more anxious to correct the trifling errors inseparable from the first appearance of any book, and even venture to agree with them, in the hope that a larger and more comprehensive work may yet be the outcome of an interest in this History of Medicine. Particularly am I indebted to those who have kindly taken the trouble to call my attention to a few inaccuracies contained in the first edition; and I wish here to express my obligation to them all, and especially to Dr. Auzal, of New York, for kind services of this character. The only regret of the author is that, in a work of this necessarily limited scope, it is possible to give only what the title indicates, - i.e., an epitome of the history of medicine, rather than a more comprehensive account, which alone should satisfy the more studious. I have added a supplementary chapter on "Iatrotheurgic Symbolism," as being quite germane to the general subject of the book. It appeared originally as the "Annual Oration" delivered by invitation before the Maine Medical Association in June, 1898, and is substantially reproduced from their Transactions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This deeply informed history traces the controversial record of "mercy-killing," a source of heated debate among doctors and laypeople alike. Dowbiggin examines evolving opinions about what constitutes a good death, taking into account the societal and religious values placed on sin, suffering, resignation, judgment, penance, and redemption. He also examines the bitter struggle between those who stress a right to compassionate and effective end-of-life care and those who define human life in terms of either biological criteria, utilitarian standards, a faith in science, humane medical treatment, the principle of personal autonomy, or individual human rights. Considering both the influence of technological and behavioral changes in the practice of medicine and the public's surprising lack of awareness of death's many clinical and biological dimensions, this book raises profound personal and collective questions on the future of euthanasia.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A physician says, "I have an ethical obligation never to cause the death of a patient," another responds, "My ethical obligation is to relieve pain even if the patient dies." The current argument over the role of physicians in assisting patients to die constantly refers to the ethical duties of the profession. References to the Hippocratic Oath are often heard. Many modern problems, from assisted suicide to accessible health care, raise questions about the traditional ethics of medicine and the medical profession. However, few know what the traditional ethics are and how they came into being. This book provides a brief tour of the complex story of medical ethics evolved over centuries in both Western and Eastern culture. It sets this story in the social and cultural contexts in which the work of healing was practiced and suggests that, behind the many different perceptions about the ethical duties of physicians, certain themes appear constantly, and may be relevant to modern debates. The book begins with the Hippocratic medicine of ancient Greece, moves through the Middle Ages, Renaissance and Enlightenment in Europe, and the long history of Indian 7nd Chinese medicine, ending as the problems raised modern medical science and technology challenge the settled ethics of the long tradition.
