Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October 1641 a rebellion broke out in Ireland. Dispossessed Irish Catholics rose up against British Protestant settlers whom they held responsible for their plight. This uprising, the first significant sectarian rebellion in Irish history, gave rise to a decade of war that would culminate in the brutal re-conquest of Ireland by Oliver Cromwell. It also set in motion one of the most enduring and acrimonious debates in Irish history. Was the 1641 rebellion a justified response to dispossession and repression? Or was it an unprovoked attempt at sectarian genocide? John Gibney comprehensively examines three centuries of this debate. The struggle to establish and interpret the facts of the past was also a struggle over the present: if Protestants had been slaughtered by vicious Catholics, this provided an ideal justification for maintaining Protestant privilege. If, on the other hand, Protestant propaganda had inflated a few deaths into a vast and brutal “massacre,” this justification was groundless. Gibney shows how politicians, historians, and polemicists have represented (and misrepresented) 1641 over the centuries, making a sectarian understanding of Irish history the dominant paradigm in the consciousness of the Irish Protestant and Catholic communities alike.

Book excerpt: In Robert Southey , Andrews argues that Robert Southey's denunciation of global Catholicism is essential to understanding his life, works, and times. On this issue, Southey was absolutely consistent in all his work and the Poet Laureate's partisan rhetoric reveals much about the religious culture of this stormy period in England.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The period between the Williamite war and the act of union saw different groups in Irish society forced to reassess their ideas of political and national identity, against the background of a changing society at home and intellectual and political revolution abroad. This volume of essays, deriving from a Folger Library, Washington, seminar, examines radical, patriot and conservative political ideas, from the debates on the meaning of the Revolution of 1688 to the emergence of democratic republicanism, and a redefined conservatism, in the 1790s. A concluding overview by Professor J.G.A. Pocock puts the Irish case in the wider context of the Atlantic world of the eighteenth century. -- Publisher description.

Book excerpt: This account provides a detailed chronicle of the Irish Rebellion of 1798, a pivotal event in Irish history. It was written by Sir Richard Musgrave, an Irish military officer and historian who was sympathetic to the British government. The account covers the causes of the rebellion, the main events and personalities involved, and the aftermath. Some of the claims made by Musgrave have been challenged by later historians, but the book remains an important primary source. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Napoleon's biographers often note his fondness for theatre, but as we approach the bicentenary of the Emperor's death, little remains known about the nature of theatre at the time. This is particularly the case for tragedy, the genre in which France considered itself to surpass its neighbours. Based on extensive archival research, this first sustained study of tragedy under Napoleon examines how a variety of agents used tragedy and its rewriting of history to make an impact on French politics, culture and society, and to help reconstruct the French nation after the Revolution. This volume covers not just Napoleon's efforts, but also those of other individuals in government, the theatrical world, and the wider population. Similarly, it uncovers a public demand for tragedy, be it the return of Corneille, Racine, and Voltaire to the Comdie-Franaise, or new hits like Les Templiers (1805) and Hector (1809). This research also sheds new light on Napoleonic propaganda and censorship, exposing their incoherencies and illustrating how audiences reacted to these processes. In short, Tragedy and Nation in the Age of Napoleon argues that Napoleonic tragedy was not simply tired and derivative; it engaged its audiences, by chomping at the poetic bit, allowing for a retrial of the Revolution, and offering a vision of the new French nation.
