Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advection-dispersion equation that is used to model the solute transport in a porous medium is based on the premise that the fluctuating components of the flow velocity, hence the fluxes, due to a porous matrix can be assumed to obey a relationship similar to Fick’s law. This introduces phenomenological coefficients which are dependent on the scale of the experiments. This book presents an approach, based on sound theories of stochastic calculus and differential equations, which removes this basic premise. This leads to a multiscale theory with scale independent coefficients. This book illustrates this outcome with available data at different scales, from experimental laboratory scales to regional scales.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A semi-analytical model is developed which accounts for solute transport through a multidimensional network of fractures having random orientations and sparse distribution. Transport processes including hydrodynamic dispersion, matrix diffusion, retardation, decay and solute transfer at fracture intersections, are considered. The model is derived by application of the Laplace transform to the governing transport equation for each fracture element. The resulting ordinary differential equations are linked using robust descriptions of mass conservation at the fracture intersections. Solute concentrations are determined by numerically inverting the transformed equations in a sequential fashion. The model is verified using a formal mass balance and through comparison to existing solutions for solute transport in porous and fractured media. To illustrate the use of the model, solute transport in a hypothetical network domain was simulated based on fracture conditions measured at a real field setting in a granitic rock"--Abstract.

Book Synopsis SUTRA (Saturated-Unsaturated Transport). A Finite-Element Simulation Model for Saturated-Unsaturated, Fluid-Density-Dependent Ground-Water Flow with Energy Transport Or Chemically-Reactive Single-Species Solute Transport by :
Download or read book SUTRA (Saturated-Unsaturated Transport). A Finite-Element Simulation Model for Saturated-Unsaturated, Fluid-Density-Dependent Ground-Water Flow with Energy Transport Or Chemically-Reactive Single-Species Solute Transport written by and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SUTRA (Saturated-Unsaturated Transport) is a computer program which simulates fluid movement and the transport of either energy or dissolved substances in a subsurface environment. The mathematical model employs a two-dimensional hybrid finite-element and integrated-finite-difference method to approximate the governing equations that describe the two interdependent processes that are simulated by SUTRA: (1) fluid density-dependent saturated or unsaturated ground-water flow, and either; (2a) transport of a solute in the ground water, in which the solute may be subject to: equilibrium adsorption on the porous matrix, and both first-order and zero-order production or decay, or, (2b) transport of thermal energy in the ground water and solid matrix of the aquifer. SUTRA provides, as the primary calculated result, fluid pressures and either solute concentrations or temperatures, as they vary with time, everywhere in the simulated subsurface system. SUTRA may also be used to simulate simpler subsets of the above process. Additional keywords: Fluid flow; Radial flow; FORTRAN. (Author).
Book Synopsis CFEST Coupled Flow, Energy & Solute Transport Version CFEST005 User's Guide by :
Download or read book CFEST Coupled Flow, Energy & Solute Transport Version CFEST005 User's Guide written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The CFEST (Coupled Flow, Energy, and Solute Transport) simulator described in this User's Guide is a three-dimensional finite-element model used to evaluate groundwater flow and solute mass transport. Confined and unconfined aquifer systems, as well as constant and variable density fluid flows can be represented with CFEST. For unconfined aquifers, the model uses a moving boundary for the water table, deforming the numerical mesh so that the uppermost nodes are always at the water table. For solute transport, changes in concentra¬tion of a single dissolved chemical constituent are computed for advective and hydrodynamic transport, linear sorption represented by a retardation factor, and radioactive decay. Although several thermal parameters described in this User's Guide are required inputs, thermal transport has not yet been fully implemented in the simulator. Once fully implemented, transport of thermal energy in the groundwater and solid matrix of the aquifer can also be used to model aquifer thermal regimes. The CFEST simulator is written in the FORTRAN 77 language, following American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards. Execution of the CFEST simulator is controlled through three required text input files. These input file use a structured format of associated groups of input data. Example input data lines are presented for each file type, as well as a description of the structured FORTRAN data format. Detailed descriptions of all input requirements, output options, and program structure and execution are provided in this User's Guide. Required inputs for auxillary CFEST utilities that aide in post-processing data are also described. Global variables are defined for those with access to the source code. Although CFEST is a proprietary code (CFEST, Inc., Irvine, CA), the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory retains permission to maintain its own source, and to distribute executables to Hanford subcontractors.
