Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrating contemporary research in the domains of analysis, stylistic analysis, semiotics, and approaches based on cognitive science, this study of 31 arias of Giovanni Legrenzi, a minor composer of the Baroque era, formulates 118 rules which describe the texts of the arias and their formal, melodic, and harmonic properties as well as the movement of the bass. The rules are then applied to a sample of melodies culled from ten centuries of Western music. A computer program that tests the validity of these rules is also described.

Book Synopsis Musical Creativity by : Irène Deliège
Download or read book Musical Creativity written by Irène Deliège and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2006-10-16 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection initiates a resolutely interdisciplinary research dynamic specifically concerning musical creativity. Creativity is one of the most challenging issues currently facing scientific psychology and its study has been relatively rare in the cognitive sciences, especially in artificial intelligence. This book will address the need for a coherent and thorough exploration. Musical Creativity: Multidisciplinary Research in Theory and Practice comprises seven sections, each viewing musical creativity from a different scientific vantage point, from the philosophy of computer modelling, through music education, interpretation, neuroscience, and music therapy, to experimental psychology. Each section contains discussions by eminent international specialists of the issues raised, and the book concludes with a postlude discussing how we can understand creativity in the work of eminent composer, Jonathan Harvey. This unique volume presents an up-to-date snapshot of the scientific study of musical creativity, in conjunction with ESCOM (the European Society for the Cognitive Sciences of Music). Describing many of the different aspects of musical creativity and their study, it will form a useful springboard for further such study in future years, and will be of interest to academics and practitioners in music, psychology, cognitive science, artificial intelligence, neuroscience and other fields concerning the study of human cognition in this most human of behaviours.
Book Synopsis The Battle of Chronos and Orpheus by : Jean-Jacques Nattiez
Download or read book The Battle of Chronos and Orpheus written by Jean-Jacques Nattiez and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2004 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection of previously unpublished essays Jean-Jacques Nattiez applies his theoretical foundations of musical semiotics to theorists such as Lévi-Strauss, Hanslick, and Brailoiu; novelists such as Proust; and poets such as Baudelaire. The author treats problems which musicologists and music lovers alike need to address: the artistic product in music of oral tradition, the nature of musical facts, and questions of fidelity and authenticity in performance practice. Nattiez tackles these perennial issues with an originality born out of his focus on the status of time in the works considered. This approach allows him to take sides, sometimes in a provocative manner, in the ongoing debates which pit adherents of modernity against apologists of postmodernism.
Book Synopsis Performance Analysis by : Madalena Soveral
Download or read book Performance Analysis written by Madalena Soveral and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-12-10 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays highlights different questions concerning music theory, interpretation, and performance. Organized into four chapters, the first section looks into interpretation from a hermeneutic perspective, whereas the second analyses the application of this knowledge in musical practice. The discussion turns, in the third part, to a new field of music theory broadly labelled as performance studies. Focused on physical and psychological events, this section broaches fundamental issues such as gesture, bodily movement, expression, emotion, a whole set of processes that act within the framework of performance. The final section addresses the artistic practices in the 21st century across present-day cultural contexts. Proposing a space for reflection in which one tries to imagine the relation between the scientific field and the interpretative process, this volume reflects the central issues of research in performance analysis, establishing connections between different disciplines, methodologies and research trends. It will be of essential interest to researchers, musicians and performers, and music students.
Book Synopsis The New Handbook of Research on Music Teaching and Learning by : Richard Colwell
Download or read book The New Handbook of Research on Music Teaching and Learning written by Richard Colwell and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-04-18 with total page 1249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Featuring chapters by the world's foremost scholars in music education and cognition, this handbook is a convenient collection of current research on music teaching and learning. This comprehensive work includes sections on arts advocacy, music and medicine, teacher education, and studio instruction, among other subjects, making it an essential reference for music education programs. The original Handbook of Research on Music Teaching and Learning, published in 1992 with the sponsorship of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC), was hailed as "a welcome addition to the literature on music education because it serves to provide definition and unity to a broad and complex field" (Choice). This new companion volume, again with the sponsorship of MENC, explores the significant changes in music and arts education that have taken place in the last decade. Notably, several chapters now incorporate insights from other fields to shed light on multi-cultural music education, gender issues in music education, and non-musical outcomes of music education. Other chapters offer practical information on maintaining musicians' health, training music teachers, and evaluating music education programs. Philosophical issues, such as musical cognition, the philosophy of research theory, curriculum, and educating musically, are also explored in relationship to policy issues. In addition to surveying the literature, each chapter considers the significance of the research and provides suggestions for future study. Covering a broad range of topics and addressing the issues of music education at all age levels, from early childhood to motivation and self-regulation, this handbook is an invaluable resource for music teachers, researchers, and scholars.

Book Synopsis Proceedings of the Worldwide Music Conference 2021 by : Ildar D. Khannanov
Download or read book Proceedings of the Worldwide Music Conference 2021 written by Ildar D. Khannanov and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-12 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents sixteen chapters in Volume 1. This Volume I of the Proceedings of the Worldwide Music Conference 2021 offers a smorgasbord of scientific approaches to music. The congress is one of a kind; it is dedicated not to a specific field but to the interdisciplinary developments and the interaction with the representatives from actual scientific disciplines. The languages of mathematics, computer science, semiotics, palaeography, and medicine are in the mix; geography of the studies is also impressive—Greece, Mexico, China, Russia, India, Poland, and USA, to name just a few. The purpose of such juxtaposition is to see how the terminology, categorical apparatus, and interpretations of music vary from science to science and how this can enrich the terminology of music theory. They cover a wide range of topics that the editors divided into four subfields: music in interdisciplinary contexts, music and current technology, musical instruments and voice, and music pedagogy and medicine. The opening section of the Proceedings is thus dedicated to the idea of interdisciplinarity, relationship of creator of theory of harmony Rameau to sciences of his time, the idea of number in music, co-creation, and the category of musical network. Three more chapters here deal with Russian palaeography, Indian musical genre, and the idea of musical semiotics. It is a kind of opening statement from music theorists. Part two, music and current technology, united three chapters, on “zero gravity” concept in modern music, discussion of scales as mathematical networks, and the innovation in digital music making, transforming it from stationary to mobile applications. The third part, musical instruments and voice, is of special interest because it is in the study of the instruments, the design, acoustic characteristics, and tuning, and sciences have cooperated with music theory for centuries. In addition to instruments, one chapter here is dedicated to voice. The last part, musical pedagogy and medicine, takes the reader even further into the interdisciplinary domain. The Proceedings is written in standard English language, prepared for the pleasure of reading of wide circles of professionals in different fields. The purpose of the editors is to bring this rather diverse set of texts into the context of a fruitful dialogue.
Book Synopsis Connectionist Models of Musical Thinking by : Harold E. Fiske
Download or read book Connectionist Models of Musical Thinking written by Harold E. Fiske and published by Lewiston, N.Y. ; Queenston, Ont. : E. Mellen Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past decade, Fiske (music, U. of Western Ontario) has been using neural network models to test his theory that musical thinking can be described as a hierarchy of progressively more intricate pattern-comparison activity, and that the resulting musical realizations are limited to only three cognitive category types. He describes the development of his theory, several related experimental studies, and the neural network models he uses to test the theory. Neural network methodology can seem daunting, he admits, so he has tried to keep technical descriptions to a minimum in order to highlight his main goal: to describe and test a set of principles that appear to represent the foundation of musical understanding. Book Synopsis A Chronological Order for the Keyboard Sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti, 1685-1757 by : Matthew Flannery
Download or read book A Chronological Order for the Keyboard Sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti, 1685-1757 written by Matthew Flannery and published by Edwin Mellen Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work proposes a solution to what is often considered the central problem facing Scarlatti scholarship, determining the chronological order of his keyboard sonatas. In the data-poor arena of Scarlatti research, this work, avoiding a primarily musicological or organological approach, analyzes large-scale patterns of musical characteristics over all (or parts) of a sonata sequence founded primarily on the Parma manuscript. As a result of an extensive application of this analytic approach to the sequence, this work notes that many sequence patterns seem to be chronologically structured, that none seem anti-chronological, and that a few mirror historical changes in the music of Scarlatti's time. These phenomena and other observations delimit something like a general history of Scarlatti's musical development enriched further by a variety of localized events. Among some 26 patterns observed in the sequence are a systematic rise in Scarlatti's use of the major mode, stepped increases in sonata compass that seem to accord with the sequential availability of larger keyboards, and both an increase in the rate at which the sonatas were combined into sets of two or three works and the use by Scarlatti of progressively complex techniques for doing so. This work also sketches a methodological background for the chronological proposal, including a discussion of why chronological order seems a superior interpretation of the sequence compared to the thought that it may have been reorganized, whether at random or by specific criteria. This study also discusses such subjects as the probable location of the 30 essercizi within the sonata sequence, the likely mis-location of several other sonatas, implications of chronological order from organology, a broadly dated window for the latter part of the sequence, the relationship between conservative and radical elements in Scarlatti's compositions, a late-sequence change in his approach to writing slow sonatas, and the interplay of structural integration and musical diversity in the later sonatas. It presents a new catalog of the sonatas that, while substantially congruent with Kirkpatrick's, proposes modifications to his ordering of the first hundred sonatas as well to a few other but smaller regions of the sequence.
