Book excerpt: In terms of frequency of accidents, rollover crashes are uncommon among all other crash types or directions. However, they are associated with highest fatality rate than any other crashes, as 33% of fatalities in automobile crashes correspond to rollover crashes. Beside a static roof crush test procedure, there is yet no standard dynamic test procedure to certify a vehicle for occupant rollover protection, because of its complexity and various factors that affect the outcome of the rollover crashes. The unpredictability of the rollover makes it difficult to design standard test procedure. There are various factors and parameters that affect the rollover crashes such as vehicle speed, height of its fall, angle of contact with the ground, side of contact, reason for the rollover, etc. The countermeasure for these parameters are also difficult to be included in a standard test procedure. The present study is focused on development and utilization of a computational finite element model of typical SUV vehicle in static and unconstrained dynamic rollover tests. The vehicle is subjected to various dynamic rollover parameters, including the height of its fall, longitudinal speed of the vehicle during the rollover and angle of contact with the ground. In the end, various parametric studies are examined on a Toyota RAV4 rollover crash, the energy inducing and the force imparting to the vehicle are analyzed, and their effects shall be identified for a recommended set of initial roll parameters.

Book excerpt: Rollover crashes are complex and relatively infrequent compared with other types of vehicle crashes, but they result in highest fatality rates among all common types of vehicle accidents. The Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV's) are the most common vehicles involved in rollover crashes compared to other vehicles. Different types of static and dynamic test methods have been proposed and implemented to evaluate the performance of a vehicle in rollover crashes. However due to complexity of rollover crashes, no specific dynamic method is required at present to evaluate the rollover crash and occupant protection responses, as a several factors could affect the rollover impact outcome. In this study, the finite element modeling and simulation of a typical SUV is first conducted for static roof crush test per regulatory Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) 216. Once model evaluation and validation is completed, the finite element modeling and simulation of a simplified Jordan Rollover System (JRS) is conducted and the results are compared with these corresponding to an unconstrained rollover tests, both performed on the same SUV. A parametric study is conducted for pertinent dynamic rollover parameters such as drop height of the vehicle, and the platform floor speed. The results from the simulation test measurements including intrusion of roof components, reaction/contact force on the platform, roll angle, and roll rate of the vehicle, and the internal energy generated of the rollover are all examined and compared. Results from the simulations are analyzed to examine the significance of using either JRS or unconstrained rollover models. Recommendations are made based on initial rollover conditions for better dynamic approach and suggestion for test protocols or standards.

Book excerpt: According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “of the nearly 9.1 million passenger car, SUV, pickup and van crashes in 2010, only 2.1% involved a rollover. However, rollovers accounted for nearly 35% of all deaths from passenger vehicle crashes. In 2010 alone, more than 7,600 people died in rollover crashes.” Rollover accidents continue to be a leading contributor of vehicle deaths. While this continues to be true, it is pertinent to understand the entire crash process. Each stage of the accident provides valuable insight into the application of reconstruction methodologies. Rollover Accident Reconstruction focuses on tripped, single vehicle rollover crashes that terminate without striking a fixed object. Topics featured in this book include: • Analysis methods through various accident phases, including advanced simulation • Vehicle event data recorder usage • Occupant ejection during rollover crash The goal of this title is to break down the various phases of a rollover crash to analyze each stage for use in the reconstruction process - to the greater understanding of crash analysts, consultants and safety engineers alike.

Book excerpt: Rollover crash events frequency accounts for only 3% among all types of accidents, but in terms of fatality rate, it accounts for 33% of fatalities in automobile crash accident events. Rollover events are complex and unpredictable, making them quite difficult to design a standard testing procedures. The angle of contact with the ground, the side coming into contact, height of fall, speed of vehicle, cause for rollover, etc., are all parameters and factors which could affect rollover crash responses. Presently the standard testing procedure for rollover is a quasi-static roof crush test procedure. This study details the development, analysis and computational modelling and simulation of the performance of an IMPAXX and aluminum foam and their potential as an energy absorbing material to improve the roof strength of a vehicle. First the IMPAXX foam and Aluminum foam are modelled using the LS-DYNA code, and their performances are evaluated using a drop tower test and a free motion headform test methods. Next, the IMPAXX foam and Aluminum foam are modelled for insertion in the roof A-pillar of a typical sports utility vehicle (Toyota Rav4). Quasi-static roof crush computational tests, per two different standards FMVSS 216 and IIHS are conducted on the vehicle and solved using the LS-DYNA for vehicles with and without the IMPAXX and aluminum foam. The results are analyzed and compared to quantify the effectiveness of the IMPAXX foam and aluminum foam as energy absorbing materials for rollover crashworthiness responses of vehicle and its occupant protection.

Book excerpt: Vehicle rollover accidents have been a serious safety problem for the last three decades. Although rollovers are a small percentage of all traffic accidents, they do account for a large proportion of severe and fatal injuries. Specifically, some large passenger vehicles, such as large vans, pickup trucks, and sport utility vehicles, are more prone to rollover accidents with a high center of gravity (CG) and narrow track width. Vehicle rollover accidents may be grouped into two categories: tripped and untripped rollovers. A tripped rollover commonly occurs when a vehicle skids and digs its tires into soft soil or hits a tripping mechanism such as a curb with a sufficiently large lateral velocity. On the other hand, the untripped rollover is induced by extreme maneuvers during critical driving situations, such as excessive speed during cornering, obstacle avoidance, and severe lane change maneuver. In these situations, the forces at the tire-road contact point are large enough to cause the vehicle to roll over. Furthermore, vehicle rollover may occur due to external disturbances such as side-wind and steering excitation. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the dynamic stability and control of tripped and untripped vehicle rollover so as to avoid vehicle rollover accidents. In this book, different dynamic models are used to describe the vehicle rollover under both untripped and special tripped situations. From the vehicle dynamics theory, rollover indices are deduced, and the dynamic stabilities of vehicle rollover are analyzed. In addition, some active control strategies are discussed to improve the anti-rollover performance of the vehicle.

Acceleration conditions during sled testing are readily reproducible and can be tuned to simulate collision events that occur during vehicle impacts with a fixed barrier or vehicle. Sled tests are conducted on automotive vehicle bodies or other structures to obtain valuable information. This information can be used to evaluate the dynamic performance of, but not limited to, vehicle restraint systems, vehicle seating systems, and body closure systems. The document is being revised to update for the current NHTSA frontal barrier crash test parameters and to make it consistent for use with both acceleration and deceleration sleds.

Book excerpt: This SAE Recommended Practice is intended to establish guidelines for conducting passenger car roll-over tests so that data obtained by various test facilities may be more readily compared. A description is provided of the facilities and procedures for a curved rail-ramp technique, which has been found to be successful in producing roll-overs. Techniques and instrumentation for the study and evaluation of vehicle structure effects and occupant movement resulting from roll-overs produced by the curved rail-ramp system are also specified. The curved rail-ramp procedure has been evolved from laboratory and field studies and tests which have sought to establish procedures which would provide realistic simulations of roll-over accidents without collision, and which would be reproducible among laboratories and between different types of passenger cars. The original issue of SAE J857 described ground level and hill roll-over techniques. However, it was found that these procedures were not always successful in producing roll-overs and the results were never reproducible. Study of the deficiencies of the previous techniques led to the addition of a curved guide rail to the ramp method of ground level roll-over, described in the original version of J857. While reproducibility of results is still limited, the curved rail-ramp system has been found to achieve roll-overs consistently, a significant step forward in the study of the roll-over event.Because there remains some general interest in the ground level and high roll-over techniques reported originally and for historical continuity, these techniques are reported in the Appendix to this recommended practice.Procedures and equipment described will be subject to continuing review and will be revised as experience and improvements in the technology warrant.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a computational, three-dimensional biodynamic model of a vehicle-occupant, crash-victim during rollover accident. The model represents the human body by a series of connected bodies simulating the limbs, torso, head and neck of the human frame. The computer algorithms are developed using DYNACOMBSC̈ a three-dimensional multibody dynamics computer simulation model. DYNACOMBS provides a dynamic analysis of arbitrary collections of bodies allowing for both translation and rotation between adjacent bodies. The relative orientation of adjacent bodies is defined by Euler parameters to avoid computational problems of singularities, which occur with other orientation angles (such as Bryan angles or Euler angles). Thus there are distinct computational advantages of the presented model over other crash-victim simulators. The governing dynamical equations for the model are based upon Kaneis̄ equations and their associated kinematical quantities (partial velocities, partial angular velocities, generalized speeds, and lower body arrays). Formulations based upon Kaneis̄ equations are believed to be the most efficient and most reliable of the various methods available for studying large multibody systems. Consequently they are ideally suited for studying the dynamics of crash victims. The developed vehicle and victim model allows for arbitrary vehicle motion. Specifically, given the vehicle rollover motion, as would occur in an accident environment, the simulation predicts the vehicle occupant movement and the forces exerted on the occupant by the seat and seat belts. The model is validated by a series of recently recorded sets of experimental data from dummies and cadavers in a variety of vehicle crash conditions.
