This book was released on 2009-05-18 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,0, University of Queensland, course: Generative Syntax, language: English, abstract: This essay is going to provide an in-depth account for the phenomenon of wh-movement in English along the lines of Chomsky’s Government and Binding theory (GB), a transformational approach in which wh-movement is described as constituent movement. The analysis will mainly focus on wh-movement in interrogative sentences. First, the theory of Government and Binding is being briefly presented and the term “wh-movement” is going to be defined. Subsequently, the different types of wh-movement occurring in languages are being presented together with wh-movement at LF. This introduction of the topic is going to be followed by an overview of prominent constraints that account for illicit wh-movement. The focus of analysis is going to be on Ross’s (1967) island constraints and Chomsky’s (1977) Subjacency. The description of wh-movement in interrogative sentences and its constraints will provide the theoretical foundation for the subsequent problem analysis: Specifically, this analysis addresses the question why there are some sentences that involve the violation of wh-islands but are acceptable for English native speakers. At the end of this essay, it is going to be briefly shown how wh-movement is being analyzed in the framework of the Minimalist Program, the successor of GB and current most prominent theory of Universal Grammar.
Book Synopsis Wh-Clauses in English by : Joe Trotta
Download or read book Wh-Clauses in English written by Joe Trotta and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-08-22 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study provides the first description-oriented, theoretically-unaligned account ofwh-clauses in Modern English. The author employs a data-based approach to examine aspects of both generative and non-generative work as regards their relative strengths and weaknesses. Wh-clauses in English: Aspects of Theory and Description is a unique combination of statistical findings and qualitative analysis. It is not only underpinned by a systematic investigation of the Brown University corpus but also includes attested material from other sources such as the British National Corpus, the CobuildDirect corpus as well as material gleaned from the internet. The qualitative and quantitative analyses are combined to approach a wide range of theoretical and descriptive issues, such as wh-movement, landing-sites for moved wh-XPs, vacuous movement, island constraints, among others. Not insignificantly, many questions of indeterminacy are addressed, such as the interface of conjunctions and relative words, the problems of demarcation between interrogatives and free relatives as well as structural ambiguities between interrogatives and exclamatives.
Download or read book The Grammar of Q written by Seth Cable and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Grammar of Q puts forth a novel syntactic and semantic analysis of wh-questions, one that is based upon in-depth study of the Tlingit language, an endangered and under-documented language of North America. A major consequence of this new approach is that the phenomenon classically dubbed "pied-piping" does not actually exist.

This title will be of interest to students of language and linguistics.
Book Synopsis Multiple Wh-fronting by : Cedric Boeckx
Download or read book Multiple Wh-fronting written by Cedric Boeckx and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Typological differences in the formation of multiple "Wh"-questions are well-known. One option is fronting all "Wh"-phrases to the sentence periphery. The contributions to this volume all explore this option from a number of perspectives. Topics covered include finer investigations of the classic multiple "Wh"-fronting languages (such as the South Slavic languages Bulgarian and Serbo-Croatian), extensions to less well studied languages (Basque, Malagasy, Persian, Yiddish), explorations for languages that don t obviously fall into this category (German, Hungarian), peripheral effects (optionality of fronting, Superiority vs. Anti-Superiority etc.), interface issues (with semantics, pragmatics, and phonology), and simply theoretical approaches aiming to capture the mechanisms involved in multiple "Wh"-fronting strategies. The theoretical framework adopted throughout is the Minimalist Program, viewed from different angles. This volume brings together some of the leading experts on the syntax of "Wh"-questions and offers up-to-date analyses of the topic. It will be indispensable for scholars investigating multiple "Wh"-questions, and will find an appropriate audience in advanced students and faculty alike.

Book Synopsis On the Typology of Wh-questions by : Lisa Lai Shen Cheng
Download or read book On the Typology of Wh-questions written by Lisa Lai Shen Cheng and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 1997 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offers an explanation for a long-standing question in the typological distinction among languages with respect to formation of interrogatives which use questions words such as "who" and "what." Proposes that the availability of question particles and the properties of question words contribute to the typological distinctions found, and argues that the availability of question particles correlates with the lack of fronting of question words. Of interest to scholars working on interrogatives, syntactic theory, comparative syntax, Chinese syntax, and typology. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
Book Synopsis Non-Interrogative Subordinate Wh-Clauses by : Łukasz Jędrzejowski
Download or read book Non-Interrogative Subordinate Wh-Clauses written by Łukasz Jędrzejowski and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-13 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines subordinate wh-clauses that lack an interrogative interpretation, particularly those in which the wh-word seems to deviate from its literal meaning. These include subordinate manner wh-clauses that have a declarative-like meaning, locative wh-clauses expressing kinds, and headed relatives that serve as recognitional cues, among many others. While regular interrogative embedding has been widely studied in recent years, little is known about the circumstances under which non-interrogative (subordinate) wh-clauses are licensed, nor why some, but not all, wh-phrases can be polyfunctional. The chapters in the book combine the study of cross-linguistic variation in patterns of subordination with formal semantic and syntactic analyses, with data drawn from a wide range of languages including Basque, Czech, English, Mandarin, Romanian, and Taiwan Southern Min. They provide novel insights into the ways in which wh-phrases can be used to introduce complements, relative clauses, and adverbial clauses, and show how the meanings associated with wh-words are exploited beyond their standard distribution. The findings have implications for our understanding of both the phenomenon of subordination as a whole and the relationship between form and meaning in wh-clauses.

Book Synopsis The Acquisition of WH-Questions by : Jill De Villiers
Download or read book The Acquisition of WH-Questions written by Jill De Villiers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1995 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special issue spans the domain of inquiry concerning the acquisition of wh-questions. Wh-questions have become a central interest for theorists of language acquisition because they exemplify some of the most significant principles of grammar. Most important, they involve movement rules; hence, their acquisition introduces issues such as: * When are long-distance rules acquired? * When are barriers to movement operative? * How do empty categories emerge? As these articles demonstrate, questions can provide a window into phrase structure as well as the principles of children's grammar. In the past several years, the growing body of research on questions has multiplied the perspectives, the range of constructions studied, and the cross-linguistic evidence about Universal Grammar and child language. In this new work, acquisition theorists have moved beyond trying to verify the claims of linguistic theory with respect to child grammars. The contributors share the perspective that one can take seriously the evidence from acquisition to suggest modifications in liguistic theory, or to help in deciding among competing accounts in adult grammar based on intuitions. Representing the leading edge of contemporary work in this domain, the articles range widely in topic, methodology, and theoretical commitments.

Book Synopsis Phrasal Movement and Its Kin by : David Pesetsky
Download or read book Phrasal Movement and Its Kin written by David Pesetsky and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2000-10-10 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the types of movement and movement-like relations that link positions in syntactic structure. David Pesetsky argues that there are three such relations. Besides overt phasal movement, there are two distinct types of movement without phonological effect: covert phrasal movement and feature movement. Focusing on wh-questions, he shows how his classification of movement-like relations allows us to understand the story behind wh-questions in which an otherwise inviolable property of movement—"Attract Closest"—appears to be violated. By demonstrating that more movement takes place in such configurations than previously suspected, he shows that Attract Closest is actually not violated at all in these cases. This conclusion draws on recent research in both syntax and semantics, and depends crucially on Pesetsky's expanded repertoire of movement-like relations. Linguistic Inquiry Monograph No. 37
