Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Complete Manual of the Pitman System Pitman of Phonography: Arranged in Progressive Lessons for Class and Self Instruction Since the invention of Phonography by Mr. Isaac Pitman, of Bath, England, in 1837, numerous text-books on the subject have been published, yet few, if any, are peculiarly adapted for school use as well as for self instruction. The lack of this desideratum led to the compilation of this treatise, in which all reference to the philosophy of speech and the science of phonetics is omitted. The redundant rules, the confusing arrangement of principles, and, in fact, everything which does not pertain strictly to the easy acquisition and practical application of Phonography for business and reporting purposes, 3 is either eliminated or modified. The success which has uniformly attended instruction given according to the method developed in this treatise, is, notwithstanding the abundance of other works upon the same subject, a sufficient justification for the publication of the work. The following lessons are based upon the ninth edition of Phonography by Isaac Pitman, published in England in 1852, and in this country by Benn Pitman in 1855, as well as by Andrew J. Graham in 1858. These text-books were, consequently, prepared over thirty years ago - long before either the teaching or practice of shorthand became a profession - and although there has been no material change in the fundamental principles, there has been great improvement in recent years in the manner of teaching these principles. In the English alphabet the sounds of Oh as in chain, Th in thin, Sh in show, and N g in sing, are not provided with distinct letters, though they are really simple sounds. The same letter often indicates different sounds, in different words, as the letter G, in the words gun, gem the use of two or more letters to indicate a sound for which a single character is pro vided, is also very frequent, as the sound of F in the word trough, triumph; and a single, simple sound is Often indicated by let ters to which entirely different values are'usuall y assigned, as in the words pleasure, azure, the letters S and Z are used to indicate a sound which has no precise representative in the language.
