Book Synopsis Naturalized Reptiles and Amphibians of the World by : Christopher Lever
Download or read book Naturalized Reptiles and Amphibians of the World written by Christopher Lever and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes how the various alien reptiles and amphibians now living in the wild throughout the world were first introduced, how they subsequently became naturalized, their present distribution and status in those countries to which they were introduced, and their ecological and socio-economic impact on the native biota and local economies. Many species have had a more or less neutral impact, being neither beneficial nor harmful. However, several have had a positive ecological or socio-economic impact, while some such as the cane toad, have had an extremely destructive effect. The criteria for inclusion of a species are that it should have been imported from its natural range to a new country by human agency--either accidentally or deliberately--and that it should currently be established in the wild in self-maintaining and self-perpetuating populations unsupported by and independent of mankind.

Download or read book The Eponym Dictionary of Amphibians written by Bo Beolens and published by Pelagic Publishing. This book was released on 2013-04-22 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New species of animal and plant are being discovered all the time. When this happens, the new species has to be given a scientific, Latin name in addition to any common, vernacular name. In either case the species may be named after a person, often the discoverer but sometimes an individual they wished to honour or perhaps were staying with at the time the discovery was made. Species names related to a person are ‘eponyms’. Many scientific names are allusive, esoteric and even humorous, so an eponym dictionary is a valuable resource for anyone, amateur or professional, who wants to decipher the meaning and glimpse the history of a species name. Sometimes a name refers not to a person but to a fictional character or mythological figure. The Forest Stubfoot Toad Atelopus farci is named after the FARC, a Colombian guerrilla army who found refuge in the toad’s habitat and thereby, it is claimed, protected it. Hoipollo's Bubble-nest Frog Pseudophilautus hoipolloi was named after the Greek for ‘the many’, but someone assumed the reference was to a Dr Hoipollo. Meanwhile, the man who has everything will never refuse an eponym: Sting's Treefrog Dendropsophus stingi is named after the rock musician, in honour of his ‘commitment and efforts to save the rainforest’. Following the success of their Eponym Dictionary of Reptiles, the authors have joined forces to give amphibians a similar treatment. They have tracked down 1,609 honoured individuals and composed for each a brief, pithy biography. In some cases these are a reminder of the courage of scientists whose dedicated research in remote locations exposed them to disease and even violent death. The eponym ensures that their memory will survive, aided by reference works such as this highly readable dictionary. Altogether 2,668 amphibians are listed.

Book Synopsis Pleistocene Amphibians and Reptiles in Britain and Europe by : J. Alan Holman
Download or read book Pleistocene Amphibians and Reptiles in Britain and Europe written by J. Alan Holman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1998-06-18 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pleistocene epoch or Ice Age, an extended period of advancing and retreating ice sheets, is characterized by striking climatic oscillations and sea level fluctuations. This age saw the rise and spread of humans and a great extinction of large mammals by the end of the epoch; in fact, the world today is essentially the product of dramatic changes that took place in the Pleistocene. This book, a companion to the author's Pleistocene Amphibians and Reptiles in North America, discusses the Pleistocene amphibians and reptiles in Britain and the European continent eastward through present-day Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, the Yugoslavian republics, and Greece. The book begins with a general discussion of the Pleistocene in Britain and Europe with an emphasis on regional terms used to define Pleistocene chronological events. Next, a look at the pre-Pleistocene herpetofauna of the study area sets the stage for a discussion of Pleistocene herpetofauna. A significant section of the book consists of a "bestiary," a series of annotated taxonomic accounts of Pleistocene herpetological taxa from the region. Following this is the interpretive section, beginning with a discussion of herpetological species as paleoenvironmental indicators and continuing with an analysis of herpetological population adjustments to Pleistocene events in Britain and Europe, and then with a discussion of extinction patterns in the region. Finally, the author compares Pleistocene herpetological events in Europe with those in North America. This volume and its companion together provide an up-to-date and comprehensive review of Pleistocene herpetofaunas across a significant portion of the Northern Hemisphere.

Book Synopsis Amphibians of the World - the Nature Lover's Life List by : Dale W. Mitchell
Download or read book Amphibians of the World - the Nature Lover's Life List written by Dale W. Mitchell and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-06-15 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to Amphibians of the World: The Nature Lover's Life List. It is the first and most beautiful (unillustrated) listing in print of all 7539 kinds of these creatures. Perhaps the most striking feature of Amphibians of the World will be its NEW LEXICON OF PROPOSED ENGLISH NAMES. For the first time in any major worldwide group, a comprehensive and systematic approach to common naming has been applied. The reader is encouraged to give feedback for future editions. Amphibians of the World is the only book to the all the Earth's amphibians which marries the useful combination of ENGLISH COMMON NAMES (for subspecies, too), SCIENTIFIC NAMES and their AUTHORSHIP/DATE, RANGE DESCRIPTIONS (where they live) and other features for those creatures that have them, such as I. U. C. N. conservation codes, introduced ranges, medical notes, etc. Also provided are sections on How to Use this Book, amphibian relationships, timeclips, sources, and no less than three Indexes and/or Cross-references. The student of these animals will be well served. It is shocking that this most basic combination of amphibian data has taken so long to appear in print. Birds and mammals have been graced with their own full-data checklists for years. Short essays on the logic underlying the author's take on the art of English common naming for these animals, the hobby of Herptiling, conservation and field ethics and what scientific classification may be saying about humankind's place in nature round out this presentation. As this is the hobby-oriented, Nature Lover's, version of this book (not just a 'scientific checklist'), it has a 'box' (actually a lozenge) to MARK YOUR SIGHTINGS, places to write in WHEN and WHERE YOU SAW AN ANIMAL, all in in a user-friendly format. The Date-Seen entry can be applied in either of two places in the life list to make room for longer locality data, where needed. Though the approach taken gives the specialist all her or his core 'bells and whistles', the focus of this effort is the general public. Think of this work as a sort of 'People's Listing' of these fellow travelers on our planet. Nature Paperback 8 1/2 x 11" (white Paper) 573 pages (plus cover)
Book Synopsis Amphibians and Reptiles of Wisconsin by : Joshua M. Kapfer
Download or read book Amphibians and Reptiles of Wisconsin written by Joshua M. Kapfer and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 1176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amphibians and reptiles represent an essential and interesting component of Wisconsin's wildlife. Eighteen species of amphibian and thirty-six species of reptile occupy landscapes across the state. They live in aquatic habitats that range from small streams to large lakes, and from open prairies to mature forests on land. These species are vital members of the biological communities in which they occur, acting as important predators, prey, and competitors, while also providing a wide variety of additional ecological functions. However, many amphibians and reptiles have experienced drastic population declines and even local extinctions in Wisconsin due to habitat loss and degradation, overharvesting, the introduction of invasive species, pollution, and other factors. This comprehensive volume, by an expert team of editors and contributors, consolidates the current state of scientific knowledge, aims to expand public knowledge and appreciation of Wisconsin's natural legacy, and brings out the herpetologist in all of us. This long-awaited, state-of-the-field synthesis also includes hundreds of color photographs and illustrations, state-level and North American range maps, dichotomous keys, and research and conservation anecdotes that will entertain and inform even the most dedicated nature lover. Amphibians and Reptiles of Wisconsin is set to become a lasting resource and armchair companion for anyone in the Midwest interested in the state's natural history and amphibian and reptile fauna.
