Book Synopsis The Distinctive College by : Burton R. Clark
Download or read book The Distinctive College written by Burton R. Clark and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The factors contributing to the greatness of a first-rank liberal arts college are difficult to analyze. Hidden from view in the mysteries of tradition and institutional aura, the insistent questions remain: How has it been done? Can it still be done? In an intensive analysis of three highly regarded liberal arts colleges, Burton R. Clark uses a developmental approach to formal organization to seek out answers to these questions. The author begins with a presentation of the historical development of three colleges, Antioch, Reed, and Swarthmore. He describes in detail how broad institutional innovations were introduced and made to endure. He then carefully notes the unique events, special conditions, and unusual features that are the components of each institution's fabric. Each of the three narratives is guided by comparative categories, that produce analytical and theoretical insights into organizational development. From the above data Clark develops the concept of the "organizational saga" as the central ingredient in the making of the distinctive college. He explains this concept in terms of organizational role and mission, using the historical narratives of the first section to suggest the bases for the development of sagas. In its empirical findings and conceptual formulations, The Distinctive College, first published in 1970, has played an important role in the analysis and understanding of college culture in contemporary America. It is a study of leadership, as well as an examination of how values are realized in the everyday routine of participants in the life of educational organizations. It remains the premier sociological study of institution building in American higher education.

Book excerpt: St. Ignatius, first-century Bishop of Antioch, called the "God-bearer," is one of the earliest witnesses to the truth of Christ and the nature of the Christian life. Tradition tells us that as a small child, Ignatius was singled out by Jesus Himself as an example of the childlike faith all Christians must possess (see Matthew 18:1-4). In Bearing God, Fr. Andrew Damick recounts the life of this great pastor, martyr, and saint, and interprets for the modern reader five major themes in the pastoral letters he wrote: martyrdom, salvation in Christ, the bishop, the unity of the Church, and the Eucharist.
Book Synopsis Christian Antioch by : D. S. Wallace-Hadrill
Download or read book Christian Antioch written by D. S. Wallace-Hadrill and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1982-09-09 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a comprehensive survey of the history and, more particularly, of the thought of Antioch from the second to the eighth centuries of the Christian era. Dr Wallace-Hadrill traces the religious background of Antiochene Christianity and examines in detail aspects of its intellectual life: the exegesis of scripture, the interpretation of history, philosophy, and the doctrine of the nature of God as applied to an understanding of Christ and man's salvation. The community at Antioch stressed history and literalism, in self-conscious opposition to the tendency to allegorise that prevailed at Alexandria. While insisting on the divinity of Christ, they were equally adamant that no other doctrine should be allowed to compromise their central belief that Jesus was really human.

Book Synopsis St. Ignatius of Antioch by : Saint Ignatius of Antioch
Download or read book St. Ignatius of Antioch written by Saint Ignatius of Antioch and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The epistles of St. Ignatius are presented here in their entirety, with the historic insight imparted in an excellent translation to English. Saint Ignatius of Antioch was one of the foremost early Christians, acceding to the role of Bishop of Antioch in circa 67 A.D. . During his tenure as bishop he would author several Epistles - or letters - to various figures of the time. These writings are treasured as some of the earliest Christian texts extant. Travelling widely during his life, St. Ignatius placed much effort in spreading the influence of Christianity. His writings are notable for coining the term 'Catholic Church', which remains in use to this day. This edition includes letters which are generally considered authentic, being as they were individually referenced by the Roman historian Eusebius during the 4th century A.D. . These are as follows: Epistle to the Ephesians, Epistle to the Magnesians, Epistle to the Trallians, Epistle to the Romans, Epistle to the Philadelphians, Epistle to the Smyrnaeans, Epistle to Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna. For the sake of completeness, this edition also contains several epistles whose authenticity is disputed among historians and theologians. The general consensus is that these letters are spurious and were attributed to St. Ignatius a long time after his death. These include: Epistle to the Tarsians; Epistle to the Antiochians; Epistle to Hero, a Deacon of Antioch; Epistle to the Philippians; The Epistle of Maria the Proselyte to Ignatius; Epistle to Mary at Neapolis, Zarbus; First Epistle to St. John; Second Epistle to St. John; The Epistle of Ignatius to the Virgin Mary. This edition contains all original notes, as appended to the English translation originally printed in 1885.
