Book excerpt: The present study examined the efficacy of two parent training programs in reducing perceived parental stress in a sample of Spanish speaking migrant farmworkers of Hispanic origin. Sixty-eight Spanish-speaking mothers, referred for parenting classes because one of their children was experiencing behavioral or emotional difficulties, were randomly assigned to one of four treatment conditions: (1) 1-2-3 Magic, a behaviorally-based program; (2) Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP), an Adlerian-based program; (3) attention-placebo condition; and, (4) wait-list control group. All treatment conditions were presented in Spanish, and offered at convenient times and locations for participants. Parental stress was measured with the Spanish version of the Parenting Stress Index-Short Form (PSI-SF), using the Total Stress Score, and the three subscale scores: Parental Distress Score, Parent-Child Dysfunctional Interaction Score, and Difficult Child Score. Assessments were completed at pretest, posttest, and at a three-month follow-up. A repeated-measures multivariate analysis of variance on the dependent measures revealed significant differences for groups across the three assessment periods. Subsequent analyses indicated that the behaviorally-based program produced significantly greater reductions on the Total Stress Score and Parental Distress Score at posttest and follow-up than the Adlerian program, the attention-placebo group, and the wait-list group. The behaviorally-based program was also more effective in reducing parent-child dysfunctional interaction than the attention-placebo group at posttest and follow-up, and the wait-list control group at follow-up, but notin comparison to the Adlerian program. These results lend support for behaviorally-based parent training in reducing perceived parental stress in this migrant farmworker population. To ensure treatment integrity, a parent trainer validity check was used in which expert parent educators rated randomly selected videotaped segments of each parent training session on five criteria. Statistical analysis of treatment validity revealed no significant differences in mean scores of expert raters across parenting groups, suggesting that the parent trainer behaved consistently on the criteria across all treatment conditions. The results are also discussed in relation to the literature on parent training. In addition, the limitations of the present study, as well as future directions for research are discussed.

Positive parent-child relationships can also reduce the risk of child abuse and maltreatment. The purpose of this project was to design a parenting program to meet the specific needs of the Latino immigrant population, to identify potential funding sources, and to complete a grant application to fund a new parenting program for community mental health centers located in Los Angeles County Service Planning Area 6 (SPA 6). The proposed program components will include workshops on psychoeducation, a support group for parents, linkage to a therapist for the parent(s), and resource fairs. This 8-week program will provide services to parents of children ages 0-16. A comprehensive literature search was completed to identify risk factors and protective factors for this community and identify the effectiveness of current parenting programs. The grant proposal is for research learning purposes only, and therefore the application will not be submitted for the successful completion of this project.

Book excerpt: Latino children and youth from low-income backgrounds express more stress, depression, anxiety, and delinquency than white, European American children and youth. Children must learn strategies to deal with and cope with stress in their lives. Parents play an essential role in children's lives and in their ability to help their children deal with stressful situations. There is a need for programs that focus on Latino parents to help parents find ways that they can help their children cope with stress. A multi-site randomized controlled trial with pre, post, and 3-month follow-up assessments was conducted to evaluate the impact of a program to help Latina mothers help their children cope with stress. Mothers in the intervention group participated in a seven-week program to learn to help their children cope with stress and deal with difficult situations. The program focused on assisting mothers to learn appropriate strategies to manage controllable and uncontrollable stressors, to recognize when children are stressed, to coach their children on coping, to understand difficult emotions, and to improve communication with their children. MANCOVAs were used to examine the impact of the program on: 1) mothers' emotion coaching, parental self-efficacy, coping knowledge, and scaffolding of their children's responses to stress; and 2) children's coping with difficult situations and behavior problems. Mothers in the intervention group, compared to the controls, showed significant increases from pre-test to post-test in emotion coaching, in their knowledge of strategies to help their children cope, in maternal scaffolding strategies to effectively support child coping, and in their self-efficacy regarding helping their children cope with stress. Intervention mothers also showed significant decreases in their ratings of children's behavior problems. Children whose mothers had taken the program reported less emotional problems and increased their use of primary control engagement in one of two situations studied. The findings show that the program had an impact on mother's ability to help their children cope with stressful situations and to empower them to have more communication about feelings with their children. Latina mothers can greatly benefit from evidence-based programs that help them learn strategies to improve their children's socioemotional development.

Book excerpt: The Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) program promotes school readiness by providing services directly to parents through home visitation. This study describes the outcomes of the HIPPY program for Latino immigrant families in a large Southwestern city. A quasi-experimental design compared 48 families on the program waiting list with 48 families who had completed at least 6 months of home visits. All participants spoke Spanish, although 3% were bilingual. Data on parenting self-efficacy, maternal depression, parenting practices, children's behaviors and language skills, and contextual factors were collected using the Parenting Stress Index, Parental Involvement and Efficacy, Center for Epidemiological Survey-Depression, Marital Conflict Scale, Marital Satisfaction, Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment, Child Behavior Checklist, and the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test. Independent t tests showed significant differences between program participants and the control group on the home environment, marital satisfaction, parental efficacy, and attachment-related stress. Two multiple regressions indicated a positive program effect on the home environment and children's receptive vocabulary, controlling for income, maternal depression, and contextual factors. The significant effect of the intervention on the total home environment is an outcome consistent with the HIPPY program's goal of empowering parents as their children's first teacher. Home visiting helps to fill the gap between the investment of immigrant parents in their children's education and their ability to prepare their children to navigate the American school system. The success of this program may be partially due to program delivery by members of the same community as participants, particularly native speakers of their language. This study also drew attention to mental health issues for this population as 20% of study participants scored in the clinical range Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), indicating an intervention focus in this area should be considered. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate Hispanic immigrant preschool parents' educational beliefs and practices while participating in a parent education and involvement program (PEIP) in a United States school. Parent involvement practices have been a hallmark of Head Start programs since the early 1970s. More recently, PEIP has spread to other early childhood programs such as Preschool for All in the State of Illinois as a program requirement. However, not much knowledge exists regarding Hispanic immigrant preschool parents' educational beliefs and practices while participating in a parent education and involvement program. The study findings indicate that Hispanic immigrant preschool parents' home educational practices may differ from what U.S. schools may expect, but the families welcome the educational supports provided to them during the school involvement programs. The study was qualitative in nature, as the majority of the data was collected in a natural setting through observations. The parents and children were observed during PEIP activities and during home activities; teachers were also observed during PEIP. In addition, interviews were completed with parents and teachers. Results show that the Hispanic immigrant preschool parents enjoyed participating in the PEIP program, and showed high levels of engagement during parent-child school activities. Parents stated that before the program they did not read to their children, but that throughout the program they learned why it is important to read to children at an early age. Additionally, I learned that the preschool teachers participating in this PEIP program valued parent involvement and had positive perceptions about the parents' home-school connections.

Book excerpt: This dissertation analyzes how a group of Latina immigrant women negotiated U.S. educational ideas and cultural messages in a program called Vamos al kinder (Let's go to kindergarten). Vamos al kinder is a preschool and parent education program for three to five-year-old Spanish-speaking children and their parents in a mid-size town in Oregon. Documenting how staff and mother-participants discussed, developed, and practiced U.S. cultural messages and parent involvement strategies in the workshops brings to light the immense amount of work, care, and love they enacted for their children and community. The dissertation has three principal conclusions. First, Latino families in my study were neither the source of nor solution to their children's potential academic challenges. Second, parent education is a complex, sometimes duplicitous space for low-income parents of color, especially Latina immigrants. Finally, Vamos al kinder and community-based programs like it can provide an alternative parent educational space, through staff's creativity, cariño (affection/care) and connections to grassroots community organizing opportunities, which allow for parent leadership. Despite deficit-oriented tools they inherited from early childhood education, the staff's tenacity in emphasizing parent and family strengths demonstrated the importance of creating safe spaces for Latina immigrant women to foster interactions, discussion, and experimentation among themselves.
