Book excerpt: Accurate modeling of the interaction between convective and diffusive processes is one of the most common challenges in the numerical approximation of partial differential equations. This is partly due to the fact that numerical algorithms, and the techniques used for their analysis, tend to be very different in the two limiting cases of elliptic and hyperbolic equations. Many different ideas and approaches have been proposed in widely differing contexts to resolve the difficulties of exponential fitting, compact differencing, number upwinding, artificial viscosity, streamline diffusion, Petrov-Galerkin and evolution Galerkin being some examples from the main fields of finite difference and finite element methods. The main aim of this volume is to draw together all these ideas and see how they overlap and differ. The reader is provided with a useful and wide ranging source of algorithmic concepts and techniques of analysis. The material presented has been drawn both from theoretically oriented literature on finite differences, finite volume and finite element methods and also from accounts of practical, large-scale computing, particularly in the field of computational fluid dynamics.
Book Synopsis Numerical Methods in Computational Finance by : Daniel J. Duffy
Download or read book Numerical Methods in Computational Finance written by Daniel J. Duffy and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-03-21 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a detailed and step-by-step introduction to the mathematical foundations of ordinary and partial differential equations, their approximation by the finite difference method and applications to computational finance. The book is structured so that it can be read by beginners, novices and expert users. Part A Mathematical Foundation for One-Factor Problems Chapters 1 to 7 introduce the mathematical and numerical analysis concepts that are needed to understand the finite difference method and its application to computational finance. Part B Mathematical Foundation for Two-Factor Problems Chapters 8 to 13 discuss a number of rigorous mathematical techniques relating to elliptic and parabolic partial differential equations in two space variables. In particular, we develop strategies to preprocess and modify a PDE before we approximate it by the finite difference method, thus avoiding ad-hoc and heuristic tricks. Part C The Foundations of the Finite Difference Method (FDM) Chapters 14 to 17 introduce the mathematical background to the finite difference method for initial boundary value problems for parabolic PDEs. It encapsulates all the background information to construct stable and accurate finite difference schemes. Part D Advanced Finite Difference Schemes for Two-Factor Problems Chapters 18 to 22 introduce a number of modern finite difference methods to approximate the solution of two factor partial differential equations. This is the only book we know of that discusses these methods in any detail. Part E Test Cases in Computational Finance Chapters 23 to 26 are concerned with applications based on previous chapters. We discuss finite difference schemes for a wide range of one-factor and two-factor problems. This book is suitable as an entry-level introduction as well as a detailed treatment of modern methods as used by industry quants and MSc/MFE students in finance. The topics have applications to numerical analysis, science and engineering. More on computational finance and the author’s online courses, see www.datasim.nl.

Download or read book Study of the Numerical Diffusion in Computational Calculations written by Despoina P. Karadimou and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The numerical simulation of fluid flow and heat/mass-transfer phenomena requires the numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes and energy-conservation equations coupled with the continuity equation. Numerical or false diffusion is the phenomenon of inserting errors in the calculations that compromise the accuracy of the computational solution. The Taylor series analysis that reveals the truncation/discretization errors of the differential equations terms should not be termed as false diffusion. Numerical diffusion appears in multi-dimensional flows when the differencing scheme fails to account for the true direction of the flow. Numerical errors associated with false diffusion are investigated via two- and three-dimensional problems. A numerical scheme must satisfy necessary criteria for the successful solution of the convection-diffusion formulations. The common practice of approximating the diffusion terms via the central-difference approximation is satisfactory. Attention is directed to the convection terms since these approximations induce false diffusion. The equations of all the conservation equations in this study are discretized by the finite volume method.

Book excerpt: This book contains original research papers presented at the International Conference on Mathematical Modelling, Applied Analysis and Computation, held at JECRC University, Jaipur, India, on 6-8 July, 2018. Organized into 20 chapters, the book focuses on theoretical and applied aspects of various types of mathematical modelling such as equations of various types, fuzzy mathematical models, automata, Petri nets and bond graphs for systems of dynamic nature and the usage of numerical techniques in handling modern problems of science, engineering and finance. It covers the applications of mathematical modelling in physics, chemistry, biology, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, computer science, social science and finance. A wide variety of dynamical systems like deterministic, stochastic, continuous, discrete or hybrid, with respect to time, are discussed in the book. It provides the mathematical modelling of various problems arising in science and engineering, and also new efficient numerical approaches for solving linear and nonlinear problems and rigorous mathematical theories, which can be used to analyze a different kind of mathematical models. The conference was aimed at fostering cooperation among students and researchers in areas of applied analysis, engineering and computation with the deliberations to inculcate new research ideas in their relevant fields. This volume will provide a comprehensive introduction to recent theories and applications of mathematical modelling and numerical simulation, which will be a valuable resource for graduate students and researchers of mathematical modelling and industrial mathematics.

Book Synopsis Evaluation of a Central-difference-like Method for the Solution of the Convection-diffusion Equation by :
Download or read book Evaluation of a Central-difference-like Method for the Solution of the Convection-diffusion Equation written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the numerical solution of the transport equation that describes the convection and diffusion of various physical quantities (e.g., momentum, heat, and material concentrations) first-order upwind schemes are widely used. For example, first order upwind differencing is used in codes like COMMIX and PHOENICS. These schemes are simple and always give oscillation-free and physically plausible solutions. However, due to false diffusion, at high Peclet numbers their accuracy on practical meshes is poor. In previous work, a central-difference-like method was presented that even with a coarse mesh produces oscillation-free solutions and of superior accuracy than the upwind scheme. For the evaluation of this method, previous work used the test problem of Smith and Hutton for Peclet numbers ranging from 10 to (infinity). To further evaluate this method, in this work results are presented from its application to another benchmark problem of computational fluid dynamics. This problem is laminar isothermal flow in a square cavity driven by a sliding lid. 7 refs., 1 fig.
