Book Synopsis Steepest Descent Trajectory Optimization with Inequality Constraints by : Andrew H. Jazwinski
Download or read book Steepest Descent Trajectory Optimization with Inequality Constraints written by Andrew H. Jazwinski and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical motivation for steepest descent solution of problems of minima and maxima of functions and functionals is presented. A method of solution of a simple variational problem, of the type encountered in trajectory optimization, is outlined. The general optimization problem, including equality and inequality constraints, both instantaneous and terminal, is defined. A general method for handling inequality constraints is developed, and a method of solving the general constrained problem is derived. The method permits the solution of realistically constrained trajectory optimization problems. (Author).

Book Synopsis Comparison of a Discrete Steepest Ascent Method with the Continuous Steepest Ascent Method for Optimal Programing by : A. Gary Childs
Download or read book Comparison of a Discrete Steepest Ascent Method with the Continuous Steepest Ascent Method for Optimal Programing written by A. Gary Childs and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A discrete steepest ascent method which allows controls which are not piecewise constant (for example, it allows all continuous piecewise linear controls) is derived for the solution of optimal programing problems. This method is based on the continuous steepest ascent method of Bryson and Denham and new concepts introduced by Kelley and Denham in their development of "compatible" adjoints for taking into account the effects of numerical integration. The method is a generalization of the algorithm suggested by Canon, Cullum, and Polak with the details of the gradient computation given. The discrete method is compared with the continuous method for an aerodynamics problem for which an analytic solution is given by Pontryagin's maximum principle, and numerical results are presented. The discrete method converges more rapidly than the continuous method at first, but then for some undetermined reason, loses its exponential convergence rate. A comparison is also made for the algorithm of Canon, Cullum, and Polak using piecewise constant controls. This algorithm is very competitive with the continuous algorithm.
Book Synopsis Several Trajectory Optimization Techniques. Part I: Discussion by : R. E. Kopp
Download or read book Several Trajectory Optimization Techniques. Part I: Discussion written by R. E. Kopp and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses several numerical approaches for solving problems arising in optimizing trajectories. The basic concepts underlying the gradient method, the second variation method, and a generalized NewtonRaphson method are presented in a very elementary manner by considering an ordinary minimum problem with a side constraint. The results obtained when the basic concepts are extended to the variational problem and the computational algorithms are then discussed. Finally, in the concluding remarks, advantages and disadvantages of each method are reviewed, and a comparison is made between the second variation method, which might be considered a direct method, and the generalized Newton-Raphson method, normally considered as an indirect method. Part II of this paper provides an application of the three methods to a specific problem. (Author).
Book Synopsis A Comparison Between Steepest Ascent and Differential Correction Optimization Methods in a Problem of Bolza, with a Method for Obtaining Starting Values for the Adjoint Variables from a Nominal Path by :
Download or read book A Comparison Between Steepest Ascent and Differential Correction Optimization Methods in a Problem of Bolza, with a Method for Obtaining Starting Values for the Adjoint Variables from a Nominal Path written by and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two methods of treating the problem of maximum range atmospheric reentry for an orbiting lifting glider are compared. A comparison of results is made, showing large differences in control variable history, and longer range for the path obtained by differential corrections. The problem was characterized by a sharp ridge in the domain of the starting values of the adjoint variables and the effect of this on the convergence of both methods is discussed. Finally, the difficulty of choosing initial approximations for the starting values of the adjoint variables is discussed, and a method is presented for obtaining these from a nominal path as the first step in the computer routine.

Book Synopsis Calculus of Variations and Optimal Control Theory by : Daniel Liberzon
Download or read book Calculus of Variations and Optimal Control Theory written by Daniel Liberzon and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook offers a concise yet rigorous introduction to calculus of variations and optimal control theory, and is a self-contained resource for graduate students in engineering, applied mathematics, and related subjects. Designed specifically for a one-semester course, the book begins with calculus of variations, preparing the ground for optimal control. It then gives a complete proof of the maximum principle and covers key topics such as the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman theory of dynamic programming and linear-quadratic optimal control. Calculus of Variations and Optimal Control Theory also traces the historical development of the subject and features numerous exercises, notes and references at the end of each chapter, and suggestions for further study. Offers a concise yet rigorous introduction Requires limited background in control theory or advanced mathematics Provides a complete proof of the maximum principle Uses consistent notation in the exposition of classical and modern topics Traces the historical development of the subject Solutions manual (available only to teachers) Leading universities that have adopted this book include: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign ECE 553: Optimum Control Systems Georgia Institute of Technology ECE 6553: Optimal Control and Optimization University of Pennsylvania ESE 680: Optimal Control Theory University of Notre Dame EE 60565: Optimal Control
