Book excerpt: How can you use the growing body of research on how the brain learns to become a more effective leader? Cognitive neuroscientists are gaining greater insights into how the brain interacts with and learns from the environment. Now David A. Sousa, one of the foremost experts in translating this research into classroom practice, examines the brain-compatible leadership practices that sustain effective teaching and learning. "The Leadership Brain" provides a new model for a whole-brain approach to educational leadership. Examining what we know about the adult brain, and how to apply these lessons to effective school leadership and team management, this powerful resource provides you with the necessary tools to: Understand the differences in learning and retention, left and right hemispheric preferences, higher-order thinking, and the nature of creativity; initiate and lead productive change within your school; effectively shape and manage school culture; address the call for ethical and spiritual leadership; understand how thinking habits influence our actions, especially with problem solving and conflict resolution; reduce misconceptions about students with disabilities, gifted, and minority students; and use information about the influence that modern society has on student learning and their different expectations. "The Leadership Brain" includes valuable self-assessment tools, resources, and practical applications that will help instructional leaders develop a modern, creative, team-centered school where all students and teachers can reach their full potential.

Book excerpt: Do students attending school on a year-round calendar outperform students attending school on a traditional calendar in reading and math? Mixed and inconclusive findings are reported in previous studies. This study examined the reading and math achievement of 2004-2005 fifth graders in three school-within-a-school year-round elementary schools located in the United States. An ex post facto comparison group posttest design was utilized. National percentile ranks on state selected standardized tests were analyzed. Overall, sixteen comparisons of year-round and traditional student achievement and growth were made. When mean scores were compared in reading and math achievement and growth, all four comparisons favored year-round education. Only one of these four differences, fifth grade national percentile rank, was statistically significant. When student level variables were controlled, four reading comparisons were not statistically significant. However, all four math comparisons were statistically significant when student level variables were controlled. This study found that year-round calendar students statistically outperform traditional calendar students in a school-within-a-school setting in mathematics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Education is a significant social program in our culture because we understand that learning well impacts our capacity to live well. Its importance produces many controversies because perspectives are greatly influenced by what policies and practices are implemented. Inevitably, the general public has insufficient time and/or interest to scratch away the veneer surrounding controversial matters and discover what should be. This book identifies numerous conflicts within the field of education and provides the perspectives and information which stakeholders within the enterprise sweep aside or cover-up. An extensive data-base is used to demonstrate why existing policies and practices create unfair learning situations for our nation’s children, frequently described as our most valuable resource. Policy-makers, both administrative and legislative, are caught in the middle; yet, they choose to avoid controversy by siding with educators. This book provides evidence of how the decision-making should be altered to achieve optimal learning in our North American schools.
