Book excerpt: Student-athletes face a variety of stressors and adversities that become hurdles in both their personal, athletic, and academic lives. This study explores the relationship between resilience, cohesion, and stress amongst community college student-athletes. Community college student-athletes (N=49) completed an online survey using the Group Environment Questionnaire, College Student-Athletes' Life Stress Scale, and Brief Resilience Scale. T-tests were used to compare differences among these variables by gender. Student-athletes reported higher levels of resilience and cohesion, which were related to lower levels of stress. This study illustrates how resilience, belonging, and coach/peer supports help decrease levels of perceived stress within the community college student-athlete population.

This study investigated whether a higher levels of career indecision and lower levels of career certainty are related to increased levels of stress in senior college athletes. Athletes were found to have significantly lower scores than non-athletes on the variable career certainty. The purpose of this study was to compare the psychological well-being of first-year college students based on previous and current athletic participation. Random stratified and snowball sampling of U.S. universities yielded a sample of 347 first-year college students. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine whether the likelihood of having clinically meaningful depression and anxiety differs between collegiate athletes who perceived sport-related changes as one of their top three stressors in comparison to those who did not perceive sport-related changes as one of their top three stressors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Cross-sectional analyses included 157 collegiate (79% Female; 13.4% DI) athletes from universities in Connecticut. Participants completed an online study survey. They were asked about their: (1) perceived top three stressors; (2) demographic information; and (3) psychosocial health (i.e. anxiety, depression, perceived stress, perceived social support, and grit). Separate adjusted binomial logistic regression models assessed the relationship between sport related stressor group (primary analysis) and psychosocial predictors (secondary analyses; stress, grit, and social support) with clinically meaningful anxiety and depression. Overall, prevalence of clinically meaningful anxiety (38.8% vs. 34.4%) and depression (62.7% vs. 62.2%) was high in both sport-related and non-sport-related stressor groups, respectively. However, there was no association with sport-related stressor group. Therefore, the purpose of this quantitative study is to determine how the following variables relate to academic stress and perceived stress either through correlations or differences--demographics, academic classification, major or field of study, athletic scholarship status, and season of sport (in- season/ out of season). An online questionnaire containing a Perceived Stress Scale and a Perception of Academic Stress scale were distributed to 151 student-athlete participants at a university in the southwest United States. The results indicated that biological sex has a significant relationship to perceived stress. No other variables were found significant to perceived stress or academic stress.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Researchers suggest that optimistic individuals approach life situations with the belief that outcomes will be favorable, and are more likely to exhibit better coping mechanisms when dealing with adversity and stress (Carver, & Scheier, 1987; Karadeaus, Karvelis, Argyropoulou, 2007). Moreover, the cognitive adaptation theory suggests that optimistic individuals are more likely to make appropriate cognitive adaptations to stressful situations (Lightsey, 1994; Alloy & Clements, 1992). Results concerning athletic status, gender, optimism, and stress are mixed. The purpose of this study was to compare athletes and non athletes and gender on optimism and life stress. The present study will utilize the Life Orientation Test-Revised, measuring optimism and the Undergraduate Stress Questionnaire, measuring life stress. The results will be analyzed using three independent t-tests with an alpha level set at .016 utilizing the Bonferroni adjustment technique. Discussion to take place will be between optimism and stress levels, athletic status, and gender.
