Book excerpt: Adolescent delinquency and concurring psychopathology has until recently been a largely neglected area of research. The MMPI-A was developed because of the lack of adolescent-focused measures, but relatively few empirical studies have been published on the MMPI-A, particularly in juvenile populations. The primary purpose of this study was to determine if the MMPI-A clinical scales can distinguish between youth in the general population of a detention center and those with mental health diagnoses who are placed on a mental health unit within a detention center. MMPI-A protocols were administered to 145 male juveniles aged between 12 and 18; 60 were drawn from the general population and 85 from the mental health unit. Mean T score comparisons were conducted between the two groups to assess whether there were significant differences between scores on scales F, 2, 4, 8 and 9. Using an independent t-test, the mental health sample appeared to have more psychopathology than the general population sample with significantly higher scores on eight of the clinical scales; 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 0. Significantly higher differences were also found for scale F and scale K. The mental health sample showed clinical significance on two of the scales; Scale 6 (Pa) and Scale 8 (Sc). The general population sample scores were clinically significant on Scale 4 (Pd). However there were no statistical differences between the two groups on Scale 4 (Pd). These results suggest that the mental health sample's delinquency is not caused by mental illness, but rather because of co-occurring disorders. Additionally, the mental health sample profiles suggest that in addition to delinquency there is a strong possibility of future pathology and the clinical high scores appear to be indicative of thought disorders, poor reality testing and mistrust. Taken together these finding support previous research that the MMPI-A is a useful measure for differentiating between groups of adolescents with conduct disorder and mental illness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to compare the delinquent behavior, psychological health, and emotional wellbeing of maltreated and nonmaltreated adolescents in a chemical dependency treatment program. Data were collected over a seven year period from intake interviews and Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) scores of 522 adolescent patients at a chemical dependency treatment program in a Northwest city of about 100,000. The subjects consisted of 220 females and 302 males. Maltreatment was selfreported by 43% of the females and 17% of the males. Results indicated that maltreated, drugaddicted adolescents engaged in significantly more delinquent behavior, including arrests and drugrelated arrests, suicide attempts, runaway behavior and illicit drug use than nonmaltreated adolescents in the program. Results of the MMPI scores revealed that maltreated adolescents scored significantly higher than nonmaltreated adolescents on eight of the ten clinical scales, indicating that maltreated adolescents entered the drug treatment program with higher levels of psychological and emotional distress than did their peers. Analyses run separately for males and females revealed that differences between maltreated and nonmaltreated patients could be accounted for, in large part, by differences between maltreated and nonmaltreated females. Maltreated females, but not males, scored significantly higher on total drug use, and on the Hypochondriasis (Hs), Hysteria (Hy), Psychasthenia (Pt), and Schizophrenia (Sc) scales of the MMPI. The unique needs of maltreated adolescents, in particular maltreated females, in drug treatment programs are discussed.
